  1. Moral issue on Scientist Calls Mars a Terraforming Target · · Score: 1

I've read many unbelievable scientific and technical things here that need to be done to accomplish humans living on Mars. However, I feel this is instead a moral issue. Is the plan to trash Earth to the point where human existence is no longer possible and then just pick up and move to Mars? Should we go on pumping pollution into the air and water at overwhelming rates without even trying to fix that? If as a species we can't solve problems such as using solar energy instead of oil as a primary energy resource, then NONE of the things necessary to live on Mars are possible. I think this is another ruse from "paid" scientists to deflect the interests of the populate from cleaning up where we are vs. moving on to other planets.

Minus our intrusions, the Earth is a paradise; we should treat it that way.

    4. Rent an apartment under new name
    5. Apply for every new credit card you can under you old name and run them all up to the max
    6. Stop paying your mortgage, credit cards, and insurance
    7. Accept foreclosure on your house and move to the apartment, do not leave a forwarding address

In short, the best way to thwart identity theft is to ruin your credit and start a new identity.

  7. Microsoft Marketing Machine on .Net:... 3 Years Later · · Score: 2, Interesting

The MMM (Microsoft Marketing Machine) does not waste time, money, and resources on something they don't need to market any more. For example, MS Office, they have done any real marketing for it in years because THEY DON'T HAVE TO. It is now monopolized to the point that it markets itself.

The same applies to .NET. They no longer need to market it because it is now the default development platform for a WINDOWS environment. They accomplished their goal of getting everyone to believe that it is Microsofts internal development platform for all their products (whether it is or not is now irrelevant). That's enough for 90% of the bozo^H^H^H^Hmanagers out there to say "We should use .NET. MS uses it internally. No one ever got fired for choosing Microsoft." What a pity.

Also, it is very common for doctors to reject any spending on IT because it will bring their 8 figure salaries down to 7 figures and that is totally unacceptable!!! 22. Open Source affects Microsoft pricing on Microsoft Profit and Loss by Business Area · · Score: 2

Could open source really affect Microsoft pricing? Here's an excerpt from their 10-Q filing:

Challenges to the Company's Business Model. Since its inception, the Company's business model has been based upon customers agreeing to pay a fee to license software developed and distributed by Microsoft. Under this commercial software development ("CSD") model, software developers bear the costs of converting original ideas into software products through investments in research and development, offsetting these costs with the revenues received from the distribution of their products. The Company believes that the CSD model has had substantial benefits for users of software, allowing them to rely on the expertise of the Company and other software developers that have powerful incentives to develop innovative software that is useful, reliable and compatible with other software and hardware. In recent years, there has been a growing challenge to the CSD model, often referred to as the Open Source movement. Under the Open Source model, software is produced by global "communities" of programmers, and the resulting software and the intellectual property contained therein is licensed to end users at little or no cost. Nonetheless, the popularization of the Open Source movement continues to pose a significant challenge to the Company's business model, including recent efforts by proponents of the Open Source model to convince governments worldwide to mandate the use of Open Source software in their purchase and deployment of software products. To the extent the Open Source model gains increasing market acceptance, sales of the Company's products may decline, the Company may have to reduce the prices it charges for its products, and revenues and operating margins may consequently decline.

That is partially due to the fact that it didn't have a native TCP/IP stack (at least it didn't when I worked with it). How many DECnet hackers are out there, raise your hands. And face it, most security issues now stem from network attacks, not from a file system or process scheduler standpoint. And another thing, compare the authentication mechanism and the options you have with the VMS UAF facility vs. the passwd/shadow files on Unix. VMS wins.

And, no, you can't just fire up CMD and get that "old VMS feeling". Case in point, type help on Windows and compare that to help on VMS. Light years apart buddy!
