Slipstreaming is so easy too
See here to do what the parent speaks of.
I work on enough computers that I build up an OEM and Dell image of XP a couple times a year in case I need to do reinstalls.
I've never slipstreamed Vista updates, but if your net connection is fast enough, you really don't need to reboot more than once or twice to apply every update.
That said, I'd love to figure out how to slipstream IE8 and WGA and so on, as the process I mentioned above *does* leave a few things out. -

Smithii is pretty much the same.
http://www.smithii.com/slipstream_xpsp2 Same thing as smithii solution. I prefer smithii as it uses the KISS method.

Re:c't Offline Update
I used this to go one better: Windows XP + SP2 + (most) post-SP2 patches, slipstreamed. When I was last forced to rebuild XP, it worked like a charm.

Re:c't Offline Update
I prefer the smithii system, using a makefile. It's easier to examine, & it slipstreams all the updates.

Re:A question for Microsoft experts here...
You can create an install disk that "slipstreams" any service packs and hot fixes. Here's a couple of resources:
Paul Thurotte's Windows SuperSite
Some dude's Blog Site (I have never used his scripts and I make no promises that it will work). -

Re:How to stop the bots
Yes, you can. Assuming you have the complete
/i386 installation directory with its .cab files, you can use these tools to make a bootable installation CD. There's an article (in german, sorry) about how it works. You may want to slipstream all the post SP2-updates as well, and I'd recommend ross' cygwin/makefile based setup for this. -

Here is another script for slipstreaming updates into an ISO:

I use it for my unattended share. Works great. -
Perfarce fails in a cross-platform environment
You can't check out files with both Unix and Windows line-endings. See http://smithii.com/perforce_bugs for the ugly details.

Re:One reason is disk space
You can slipstream SP2 and all critical updates into a single ISO image that will fit on a 700mb CD. You don't even have to do it manually, as there is a script to do it for you.

Re:XP SP2 problems
Why are you trying to update SP1 to SP2? If it's for new installations, you really should learn about Slipstreaming. It's really easy to do.
In fact, here is a script that will not only splipstream in SP2, but all critical updates automatically:

My GPL based si_installer let's you easily download and install all of the utilities on http://systernals.com/.

Re: Lifetimes...
Not updated in nine months? That's the same as never updated.
Windows XP SP2 came out in August 2004, IIRC. Not to say that that's perfect - but it does fix some problems, right?
For updates since then, you might check the Microsoft Security Bulletin Search; I got that from a smithii page on slipstreaming, which also includes a file to download those files, up through November, anyway. That requires Cygwin, although you could just pull the URLs out of that & fetch them all. Either way, you could download them to another computer, then burn them to a CD, then run them on your laptop before you reconnect to the net. -
