Here is the truth about the naming scheme.

Re:Still no virtual desktop
Windows had virtual desktops before Linux got a GUI...
Um.
You *do* know about TWM? You know... the X11 window manager coded in the late 1980's? And before that there was UWM, coded in 1985.
RedHat 1.0 included X11 in its distro in the August 1995.

Codenames Suck?
Let's see, Microsoft is in Washington State, not far from Whistler, a popular ski location, and home of the Blackcomb ski lodge. Say, didja notice it's not far from the Yukon, which is one of Canada's northernmost provinces? While in Whistler, why not check out the Longhorn Saloon?
Maybe, if you want some privacy, you'll stay at the Avalon Inn, or tour scenic Whidbey Island.
Codenames are generally not for show, they're just names used around campus to refer to products INTERNALLY. People catch on and use them, but almost no one ever hears about them outside IT folk. Official product names used for marketing are generally reserved for final releases. Linux developers do it too. Perhaps, if you don't understand the naming scheme of "codenames," you should simply ask. -
Re:The meaning of Severn
RedHat has an odd way of naming releases; the way I understand it is that each consecutive pair of release names has something in common, but (see here) for a good explanation). So for instance, "Pinstripe" followed "Zoot" (both kinds of suits), and "Guiness" followed "Pinstripe" (both British beers). So the last one was "Shrike" and this one is "Severn" which previous posters have noted are both characters in the "Hyperion" novels. Maybe the next one will be a river or a UFC guy.

Re:Names
Psyche was the name of Redhat 8.0, Phoebe is the name of the beta of Redhat 8.1. This webpage has a list of the names up to 8.0, and as far as I can tell, there is no real pattern or logic to the names.

Re:Get it right
And Red Hat code names are usually related to each other, as chronicled here: valhalla -> limbo -> null -> psyche.

You heard it here firstSee for a page that goes into more detail than any sane person could possibly want about the Red Hat release names.
Having seen the progression, the next name should be Polevault.
