50 year old spaceship [Re:Downmaxx]
There's no spacecraft other than SpaceX's at the moment with a downmass capacity in the 100+ pound region.
Soyuz.
Yeah, let us now compare capabilities a 7 year old rocket/ship to another with over 50 years of history. Soyuz can carry three astronauts at most to ISS, and is a single purpose ship.
The post to I was responding was about downmass capacity. The statement was incorrect: Soyuz--as you pointed out-- routinely brings down three astronauts, which is a down mass of a lot more than 100 pounds.
The fact that Soyuz has "over 50 years of history" and Dragon doesn't was not brought up in the statement to which I was responding, so I didn't mention it.
Crew Dragon can carry 7, and also some cargo making the transportation to station cheaper overall.
If we're comparing to vehicles that haven't flown yet, we'd have to also add Boeing CST "Starliner", NASA Orion and Sierra Nevada Dream Chaser, among others

They are done by the private industry... The Cygnus spacecraft is owned by Orbital, not NASA (the article summary used here isn't very clear on that). NASA contracts ALL U.S. resupply missions out to Orbital ATK and SpaceX.
So far.
But they just added Sierra Nevada to the list of commercial resupply providers:

SNC did it first
Sierra Nevada Corporation designed and built the system that performed the first automatic landings of VTOL and fixed wing UAV's on small ships in the mid 1990's. The VTOL UAV was the Bombardier CL-327 and the fixed wing UAV was the IAI Pioneer. See the videos. I know because I was part of the team. The level of difficulty is exactly the same as landing a manned aircraft (maybe more because there is no pilot to take over in the event of problems). We built the 35ghz tracking radar system and designed and implemented all the autoland algorithms including the special purpose autopilot code (it has to be much higher gain than a normal autopilot) and the ship motion stabilization.
A variant of this system is autolanding UAV's all over Iraq as we speak. -
