Explain the "news"?

Their currency is manipulated.

If you actually knew about the history of RMB and its black market, you would know their manipulation was not effective or at most marginal. And the same practice has been or is being practiced by the US and most other countries.

Their stock market has 2 books, one set you can see, the other you can't.

Same in the US, especially before Great Depression

They sell pet food that poisons pets. They sell baby formula that harms babies.

Many of those "they" got death sentence and executed.

They have no respect for IP property.

Same with the US which stole most of its technologies from Europe in the 19th and early 20th centuries.

They're poisoning their environment such that you can't see across the street due to air pollution, and can't drink the water because of some mining company upstream.

Same happened to the US and are still happening in many other countries. We just exported the pollution.

The news media is censored so that non of their citizens know any of this, except what they can see with their own 2 eyes.

Clearly you have not actually read their online news, likely because you can't even read Chinese and have to rely on your Western media outlets.

from official xinhua news: another train, D3212 was struck by lightning a mere 5km away from the derail site under discussion here (the two trains involved are d3115/d301). d3212 lost power and stopped, too.

I think pc to pc is fine. but using a fix phone line to talk to a computer or the other way arround uses other resources aside form regular internet connection.
But again, I think a large part is that this sort of activity cut into big corporation/government's bottom line, that's why skype is being shut out.

Every year or so, I get to rewrite this article, because it seems to continue to be regarded as news.

The government of the PRC, through Zhonghua Telecom, continues to filter traffic going in and out of China.

The filters do not work. This is old news. Proxy servers are everywhere.

Here's the secret which doesn't seem to have gotten out of China yet, the filters don't have to work. They're not designed for the users.

Contrary to popular belief, China is not run as an absolute dictatorship. It's run by a circle of maybe a few dozen people who's opinions really matter. Like any good-sized group, there's a lot of disagreeement about how much (or little) openness there should be to the rest of the world.

The filters exist to appease the more close-minded members of the circle and to let them know that the best efforts are being made to keep bad stuff out of the minds of users.

My best guess about Google disappearing is that one or more companies who are providing portal and search services in China have been complaining to the Ministry of the Information Industry about loss of market share to Google. The solution? If Google gets blocked, the market share for locally-produced Chinese portals goes up!

Is this good policy? No. Probably not. I've seen protectionist policy used all over the world and it's generally not the consumer or even the producers who benefit. It's a few well-placed friends of the folks in power. At least in this case, there's always another open proxy server which someone "forgot" to close up to work around this bit of government silliness.

IBM threw the PC market down the drain by licensing its OS to third parties. Who is to say that they won't do exactly the same thing with Linux ? Suppose they spend all that cash improving Linux, and then some other corporation comes along and takes that work and packages it up in an ISO image and sells it for next to nothing like cheapbytes did to Redhat ?

IBM has also got a somewhat questionable reputation for Naziism, and apparently some of the computers used to facilitate the Holocaust were supplied by IBM. Open Source software has enough trouble with Stallman the Communist without people associating it with Naziism as well! Imagine the scene: You try and install Linux on your mom's PC. She looks at you in horror "I don't want any Nazi/Commie operating system on my PC. Re-Install W2k this instant!!!

Yeah. I can see it now. Linux == Nazism == Communism.

Addresses really aren't too much of a problem for the average Chinese surfer at the moment. Most surfers know some smattering of English to remember the URLs. Who said that a URL has to mean something for people to remember it? Two of the more popular search engines/destinations are sohu.com and 163.net. No meaning in either English or Chinese.

However, if you really, really, wanted to put Chinese into the URL, you can either:

• Use the pinyin script, which translates characters to words like zhaopin (job vacancies). This can be a bit ambigious though (throws out all the tonal inflections) and from surveys done last year, not all consumers think in pinyin.
• Use Unicode. Chinese characters are part of Unicode. This is more likely if and when Unicode becomes much more common. However, the Chinese market mindshare may already be saturated by then.

In short, I doubt it matters. URLs aren't a problem. Displaying Chinese script is very well established. The issues are no longer technical. They have everything to do with infrastructure now.
