Re:Sony
Interesting, I don't really understand Sony corporate structure, but as far as I know, Sony Music Entertainment was a separate company Sony bought in late 80s (Wikipedia seems to back this up).
Do really they ditched their core business (high tech) for their media business? Wikipedia says the same as you:
The AIBO and the rest of Sony's artificial intelligence program was discontinued after 2005 in Sony's effort to make the company more profitable.
But offers no source. Sony AIBO Europe announcement doesn't says it was ditching the whole AI and robot program. This seems very strange.
There's seems to be at least one (really liked that page design) Sony Lab out there.
Disappointing.

Sony did in 2001
Here's something very simmilar from sony in 2001.
the sony one used a surface to contain the video, whereas the siftables have their own screen and apparently contain tilt and motion sensors not just position on the surface screen. hence they have a lot more gestures. But Sony had the basic idea working.

Thumbsense makes touchpads very usableThis is not a reply about past laptops I've owned but a very useful program for laptops with touchpads.
Thumbsense converts certain keyboard keys into mouse clicks when a finger/thumb is in contact with the touchpad. It works great and the keys can be changed to suit your needs (though, alas, there is no middle click that I've found).
The Thumsense site is http://www.sonycsl.co.jp/person/rekimoto/tsense/soft/ and can be downloaded from the "Version" link at the bottom of the page.
Oh yeah, as the website says:
Currently, the software works on Windows(XP or 2000). Two major touchpad devices, Synaptics and ALPS are supported (ThumbSense automatically detects them).Anyway, its a cool little program and is free. Try it, you might like it...
