Re:Okay, we get it. This is leverage for 7 migrati
What really needs to happen is that "the public" needs to be aware of what is happening and, in Fox News style, be instructed how to feel and respond to it.
I'm not sure why you think this is the sole province of Fox News, Perhaps because Fox News more closely reflects what the general American public thinks and feels? And thus appears to be more effective at shaping pubic opinion, when in fact they are more reflecting public opinion than shaping it. Here is a link that lists many attempts (some successful, some not) by other news sources to shape public opinion by selectively (and sometimes falsely) reporting the news: http://spectator.org/archives/2009/09/15/media-malpractice-tom-brokaws/

Re:can Americans tell me..
Yea, waiting 6 months to get an MRI after a 90kph motorcycle accident in Canada is oh so good (friend of mine) Or lets try Britain:
That is why the Orwellian named NICE, National Institute for Clinical Effectiveness, in Britain recently ruled that it would not pay for treatment for macular degeneration for seniors until the patient went blind in one eye. Seniors have been denied treatments for cancer on the same grounds.
Socialized medicine means healthcare rationing just as it does in every country that has it. -
No wonder..I am not suprised at all.
The [mighty] USA will always complain about her neighbor to the north (Canada). Heck, there is even a prominent politician who said the 9/11 terrorists came from Canada! Imagine that.
This politician had presidential ambitions I must add.
Then there are those who criticize its health care system although Canadians generally love what they have and in fact, live as long as Americans on average.
It's a strange world.

Re:Yeah, but what's the point?
You have good points but you also miss one important thing, the fact that nobody but the car makers themselves ran the industry into overcapacity and ensured their ruin. In Finland alone (where I happen to live) there's an estimated 100'000 cars waiting to be transported to Russian market but nobody is buying them. And there we were told for years now that cars were only manufactured to orders. Now THAT was bull.

Re:And the web site was already slow this morning.
One thing you can always count on is the ineptitude of government.
That being said... The President of the US actually has very little to do with the economic health of the nation. See below:
SeekingAlpha
American Spectator
Mackinac CenterFurther, most experts agree that the *actual* problem of this current market collapse stems to four things:
#1 - The CRA expansion in 1995, which put 30% more people on the housing market than there should have been, creating an incredible sellers' market in which housing, which previously had roughly paced inflation, spiraled up until people were looking at "house value" increases of over 200%.#2 - The change in the Fed's policy when Alan Greenspan was appointed chair, which changed from relatively aggressive use of the Fed Funds Rate to deflate economic bubbles and contain damage (the cause of the late-'80s "recession" for example) to allowing bubbles to grow and grow under the idea that lowering the Fed Funds Rate after the fact would "clean up the mess" and that there would be "better growth" under the bubble... unfortunately economic bubbles are more like cysts or abcesses than blisters.
#3 - The abrupt change between a far-too-liberal and far-too-conservative method of valuing a lot of mortgages. Prior to the Enron debacle and Sarbanes-Oxley reforms, the "valuation" of many of these loans (which were being used to back other securities which in turn backed more securities) was at 100% of the loan hidden in "tier 3" assets (e.g. "things we can't put a price on at this second so we'll estimate it and get back to you later) on most companies' balance sheets. This is called "mark-to-model."
Post-SOX (and coming to today because it takes years for large companies to bring everything in line with new reforms like that), the companies were required to mark the mortgages to their actual market worth (e.g. what they could get if someone bought the mortgage from them this minute). Unfortunately, since they were all being massively marked down as someone tried to PUT a market worth to them, there were suddenly MASSIVE amounts of these loans on the market, and as a result they were getting marked down to literally pennies on the dollar. This shift to "mark-to-market" accounting on the loans is what pulled the rug out from underneath a lot of other securities whose backing could be traced back to them, as well as requiring the banks (which had been using these loans as collateral on the balance sheets) to start holding back a lot more capital to service their existing accounts.
There needed to be a middle ground in this, but there wasn't.
#4 - The 1999 dissolution of the 1933 Glass-Steagall reforms, which had previously prevented investment banks from owning other financial institutions, caused much of the "piling-on" of securities backed by other securities backed by other securities backed by... well, it turned out, nearly-worthless (in the mark-to-market sense) loans.
The only part Bush plays in this is that he (a) signed SOX (which passed nearly damn unanimously from the Congress and could easily have been a Veto Override anyways) and (b) he let Greenspan, and then Greenspan's hand-picked successor, run the Fed.
P.S. I'm not a fan of Bush by any means, but fair's fair - he doesn't get the blame for this one and I'm a bit disappointed in the person who posted this and the person who posted an ill-considered, ill-thought, ill-informed rant on this contest.

Re:Impermanence of websites
You're missing out on a lot of good the SEC has done in the last few years, then. They're the only guys not out glory-hogging and actually doing a few things to keep the market and regulations under control. They've limited - and are trying to further limit - naked short-selling and blatant stock manipulation; and, in particular, they did about as well as they could in the whole Bear Stearns debacle:
http://spectator.org/dsp_article.asp?art_id=13479 - yes, I know it's the Spectator, but it's a good review of Chris Cox. If you're mad at the government for actually staying out of the way of businesses, you're not being smart with your money. Overpaid CEO's of failing companies are a DROP in the bucket of everything that matters right now, and if that's your sole concern, you're going to lose out at one of the best times to buy into the market in your lifetime. -

Re:How about misdirection...
Demagoguery works both ways...
Sorry, not buying it. Why can't grandma pony up 40 bucks, especially since she gets a fat social security check every month? Instead of your demagogic misdirection, how 'bout you face facts: The government is subsidizing mind control devices in order to ensure the passivity of the populace.
(As a person who hates TV and doesn't own one, it really pisses me off that my tax dollars are being spent on this boondoggle. Fortunately, the avarice of the convert-makers will ensure that the device costs far more than 40 dollars.)
You want demagoguery? How about this: The government should send a check for 40 dollars to every single cigarette smoker to account for increased prices (because of lawsuits & taxes). Or maybe the government should send 40 grand to Coca-cola for every soda/pop machine that is removed from our schools because of those uppity parents' groups.
Your demagogic judo misses a very salient point: TV is bad for you. It's bad for your mind, your body and your soul. Why is the government subsidizing something that, by almost all accounts, is detrimental to our health? Children spend 44.5 hours per week in front of screens -- as much time as I spend at my job -- and the government is not only unconcerned they're funding this? Don't you see something wrong here?
The posters who mentioned Bread & Circuses are right on. This is about pacifying the population. If we didn't have TV to numb our brains people might start to wake up to all the nefarious shit going on around us. Ideally, TV would be an excellent medium to tackle these social ills, but the mega-media-corps rarely seem to do so, especially when their own bottom line is at risk.
Instead, we will all continue working all day, going home to veg for a few hours and then waking up and doing it again... and with our softened brains we'll never have time to ponder why a highly-advanced country like ours works so much, yet has so little to show for it (besides bigscreen TVs). With American Idol on we'll never deduce that the rich are stealing from us through inflation, real-estate boom & busts, taxes and other financial trickery that make it possible for the middle classes' earning power to actually decline over the last 30 years despite the rich getting fantastically richer.
We are being FUCKED. But most people are too hypnotized to notice.

I agree completely, though, that when civil servants take this kind of a risk, something is decidedly rotten.
That is by no means certain.
It could simply mean that they are committed to their own cause, which could be anything from A-F below:
A. Truth, Justice, and the American Way
B. I don't like what's going on, and leaking is easier than filing a complaint through proper channels
C. Embarrassing Bush will help Hillary win, and I probably won't get caught
D. Bring down Bush, no matter the cost.
E. Bring down America, no matter the cost.
F. Other
There is some very interesting information about Mary McCarthy, let go for leaking at NSA. I'm holding out for B, C, or D. Probably a mix.

Re:What of pornography?
My assertion wasn't "we have more free speech than the others combined", and I never claimed the US has no restrictions on freedom of speech. I asked a question: "What country has a more concrete right to freedom of speech than the US?"
I'll take the EU as an example. Is speech praising the Nazis legal there? It is here in the US, even though we find it reprehensible, we don't outlaw it since we believe freedom of speech includes speech we disagree with. In many parts of the EU, any speech denigrating a racial or religious group is considered a crime. An Italian author has been charged with what amounts to blasphemy. -

Re:Do you welcome your Islamist overlord?
That list you quote is "from a list of guests" and is NOT a complete list.It is from the Washington Post and another Post article says "President Bush, insisting that Arafat take more decisive action to rein in Palestinian militants, has refused to invite him to the White House, where Arafat was a frequent guest during the Clinton administration."
From American Spectator:"Bill Clinton, for example, invited a terrorist to the White House who had conspired in the deaths of Americans, even letting him sleep and sate himself at taxpayer expense as an honored guest for weeks at a time. His name was Yasser Arafat, the Kato Kaelin of the Clinton years, bunking so frequently at the White House the press described him as a "constant guest." One of Arafat's terrorists, marveling at his White House residency, was able to brag to the press, "Arafat was a guest at the White House more often than Netanyahu was."
What a stunning example of the slashdot mod system that your partial list is 'insightful'... -
Re:Kerry said no such thing
See my other post, he clearly admitted atrocities on Meet The Press, he also did it later in that testimony as pointed a=out by DAldridge.
Also, the testimonies at the Winter Soldier meetings were invaded by liars, this is known and some even claim Kerry pressured them to lie, so he could turn around and quote them to Congress.
Do you really trust someone who forces others to lie so that he can scapegoat them when his testimony is refuted???
I'm not saying he did this, but without a proper investigation how do we know? Have you ever heard of Steve Pikin? We know he lied about the Kansa City meeting, so why not lie about other VVAW stuff? -

By The Prowler Published 9/10/2004 12:09:06 AM
More than six weeks ago, an opposition research staffer for the Democratic National Committee received documents purportedly written by President George W. Bush's Texas Air National Guard squadron commander, the late Col. Jerry Killian.
The oppo researcher claimed the source was "a retired military officer." According to a DNC staffer, the documents were seen by both senior staff members at the DNC, as well as the Kerry campaign.
"More than a couple people heard about the papers," says the DNC staffer. "I've heard that they ended up with the Kerry campaign, for them to decide to how to proceed, and presumably they were handed over to 60 Minutes, which used them the other night. But I know this much. When there was discussion here, there were doubts raised about their authenticity."
The concerns arose from the sourcing. "It wasn't clear that our source for the documents would have had access to them. Our person couldn't confirm from what file, from what original source they came from."
The documents that CBS News used were not documents from any of Bush's personnel files from his time in the National Guard. Rather, CBS News stated that they were documents uncovered in the personnel files of Killian. That would explain why the White House or the Pentagon had never before released or even seen them.

Re:Nixon, anyone?
Ah, quoting the American Spectator, which quotes an unnamed "another Kerry advisor".
The Washington Post reports that a longtime Bush lawyer has quit his campaign after his advice to the Swifties was revealed. He doesn't even appear in this otherwise illuminating graph from the NY Times.
The Swifties themselves were first hired by Nixon for dirty tricks against Kerry, when Nixon was threatened by the truth about the dirty war he was running with concientious soldiers like Kerry. They served the country both under command in the field, and back home to end the vicious war. Who do the Swifties serve? -
Question for womenAre you more likely to apply to MIT because it has a women president?
An article related to this topic.
Is Evolution Leaving Men Behind?
Here's something Charles Darwin in all his philosophies never imagined. As the third millennium of the common era kicks off more American women than men are graduating with baccalaureate and post- baccalaureate degrees. More women are enrolled in law schools, journalism schools, and soon, they will exceed men in all professional schools, with the exception the dreary schools of engineering and business. At this rate, women will soon overtake men as the top wage earners. Evolution is leaving men behind.
McElroy, who writes a column for FoxNews.com, reports being dismayed at finding educated women who are "genuinely horrified at the prospect of dealing with 'lesser' and 'lower' men as equals in their personal lives." But one of the findings of evolutionary psychology is that females of whatever species are hot-wired to find the best possible mate.
The second para is kinda OT, but interesting nevertheless.

Re:Don't underestimate Valenti
"You're jumping around in your timeline."
I'm not jumping around; I'm merely using the VCR as an example of Jack Valenti/MPAA being wrong about technology.
Here's part of an article from the American Spectator: "YES, VALENTI HAS MADE himself a laughingstock to those who pay attention to history -- and his attempts to repeat it. He was the figure who predicted in the early '80s that the VCR would kill the movie industry, rather than providing it with new and huge sources of revenue. Videocassettes and DVD sales now account for about 40 percent of movie grosses.
Despite this sub-Nostradamus performance, he likes to think of himself as always forward-looking. He told Boxoffice magazine in 1997 something that his successor, whoever he might be, should remember, even as Valenti himself seemed to forget it: "People thought movies would be obliterated by cable, but last year more people went to movies than in the past 40 years. That's with surfing the Web, satellite, cable, television -- people are still going to movies in greater numbers.? People don't want to be chained to an electronic box, they want to have a social experience. They still say, 'Let's go to a movie and get a pizza after.'"
This, please note, was 15 years after Valenti memorably quipped to a congressional committee that "the VCR is to the American film producer and the American public as the Boston Strangler is to the woman home alone." And now, movies are threatened by what Valenti assures us is the even worse threat of digital piracy. He hasn't made murderous analogies this time, but if the VCR was the Boston Strangler, perhaps DVDs and the possibility of digital transmission are Pol Pot?"(The American Spectator)
I can't find any information supporting your claim that the movie industry lost money because of VCR's. What was the change of business model you're referring to? Maybe people didn't rent movies as much when the VCR first came out, but that's because they were still new. Show me some evidence that movie sales slumped because of the VCR. I remember the 80's, but I don't remember this time period you seem to remember when we bootlegged movies instead of going to the theatre.
"Piracy right now loses the movie industry money. Perhaps one day they'll find a way to make money off of piracy that is above and beyond the money the lose from it, but right now they lose money."
I don't see the facts any more than I did for the VCR in the 1980's. Look at this from CNN last February: "Last year was the first year since 1991 that movie studios saw less U.S. box office revenue than the year before, as revenue slipped to $9.28 billion from $9.32 billion a year earlier." (CNN Money
Notice that 1991 was a bad year too? Could slumping sales have something to do with the economy in general? If I were looking at this, I was assume that it was more logical to conclude that dropping sales in 2002-2003 and back in 1991 were due to the recovering economies. Later on in the article, they're talking about how things are improving. They expect to be doing well this year or next. It sounds like that will go right along with the economy, not by stopping p2p networks. Based on the earlier "laughing college students", I don't think that p2p is in a downturn right now. I'm not arguing that piracy helps the movie industry, I'm arguing that it doesn't hurt it. P2p networks, on the other hand, are what the MPAA is actually going after to fight piracy. I'd like to see the situation resolved in court. The VCR was found legal because there were more noninfringing uses for it. I agree that there's a lot of crap on them now, but I also find it useful for legal uses. How many movie trailers, articles, and mirrored pages have you seen displayed right here after a story's link has been slashdotted? I bet Foxnews, CNN, BBC, et -

This is a Spectator editorial; not scienceWhen I first read the article I was intrigued but a little bit baffled.
The author makes some strong claims (some of which I agree with) but he doesn't give proper scientific evidence. Instead he refers to press releases, articles by journalists, and other soft facts. For example, he describes the implications of the research on science as being brought to light by the Washington Post. Where were the scientists?
Well, after a couple minutes of digging I figured out what was wrong. This is an editorial by Tom Bethell, who is the senior editor of The American Spectator.
The American Spectator is a news magazine with an openly ultra-conservative agenda. My guess is that the intent of this article was to show the profligate spending of the US government. The author, Tom Bethell, is asking, "Why did the US government spend billions on research which (it now turns out) might not have direct medical uses for decades?"
It's a reasonable question. If it was my question to answer, I would say that it is precisely because this research is a long term investment in science that the government should be funding it. If Mr. Bethell is correct that human genome research isn't directly applicable for medical use, then what company would tackle it? Twenty years is a long time for a company to bleed money waiting to become profitable.
In general you should take anything you read in the The American Spectator with a grain of salt. The current issue includes articles that make even moderate conservatives queasy such as More Money in Politics, Now! that ends with the following mind bender:
Twenty years ago, when Sen. Moynihan accused the Reagan administration of deliberately lofting the deficit to push down spending, it occurred to many Reaganites that he had a heck of an idea. It is time for the creative faction in American society, otherwise known as the top one percent, to reach a similar conclusion about the charge that unlimited citizen donations would allow them to buy elections. It's a heck of an idea.
Another good one is an article where they try to recycle the old "Cigarettes Don't Cause Cancer Because Scientists Haven't Proven It (Yet)" argument and apply it to (of all things) DDT.

Serious Doubts?
How can anyone call this serious doubts when the article is posted on spectator.org?
Please read their article in the same exciting issue on the deadly effects of not letting people use DDT
which says "You heard it talked about today on Rush Limbaugh..."
Anti-Science? Nope. Not at all.
I hear about all of homo saps technological breakthroughs on Rush.
Why post this trash?
Is it just to annoy people like me who might have some work to do on the human genome
and are instead posting to slashdot?
Or so we can all laugh about how the author of this piece tells us that there is no code,
and then proceeds to tell us that there is a meta-code?

Voting is Overrated
I'll re-post this here since the leading subject line is more relevant: There are mathematical ways of demonstrating that your little vote gives you minimal control over the output of the political machine, but James Bovard puts it in blunt terms that anyone can understand: Voting is Overrated. Next week the article will be moved to Bovard's Archives.
