Raise the Yamamoto from the ocean floor and make it into what mankind needs to survive....
Everything you need is right there on that website...

How about a battleship?
According to TFA, the asteroid is mostly black and "aircraft carrier sized". The first thing that flashed into my mind was that it would be very interesting if radar images during the flyby revealed it was in fact a very, Very VERY old spacecraft.
How about a balttleship instead?

DO NOT. REPEAT DO NOT watch this if you loved it as a child. The poor excuse for what passed as science and science fiction here made me think what a stupid ignorant child I was. Huge nostalgic letdown. By comparison Star Trek Original Series is realistic - that is how far fetched and bad the science is.

Restart the Orion Project
We need to get to work right away. Forget Iraq, lets spend 87 Billion on a new "Super Orion" class space destroyer. We could get an old Battleship and refit it with a pusher plate and the necessary accessories and have money to spare. Where do I sign up, I want to run the ABM laser cannons.

Wave Motion Gun
So like, umm, does this mean that we'll soon see stuff like the Wave Motion Gun like they have on the Space Battleship Yamato?

Too much technology
Too much technology makes it too easy for the writers. If there is a serious problem, a warp drive or a time travel will get the heroes out of trouble. If there were technological constraints, then the writers would have more things to write.
For example, if the ships had no shield, combat would have real tactics. Ships would be hidden behind asteroids, try surprise attacks, launch missiles, etc.
As it is right now, anything can happen. Q can jump into the plot any time and mess things up.
The writers should also have in mind that a series is as big as its characters are; and most successful series have a mission in them: people try to achieve a target, there is a focus.
Star Trek does not have big characters, except for the captain of the Enterprise (and maybe Spok!). Geordi La Forge, Lt Data and the rest of the crew make up for an interesting party, but not that interesting in the long run.
Stories like 'The Lord Of The Rings' are great because the main focus is on the characters, their growth, their mission in life. If these goals can be accomplished by impressive actions on behalf of the key individuals, then the story will be a success. If not, it will be fun for a while, but it will be quickly forgotten.
You may not know one of the greatest shows: Star Blazers. Far superior than Star Trek, even in the errors section(it has some major goofs, but they do not distract from the story).

Gamilon Threat?!?
Since experts had not predicted a meteor shower for Monday, whatever was responsible for the sightings was probably small, he said.
"We would have tracked a big one, and known it was coming," he said.
The smallest size the lab can detect is 10 to 20 meters in diameter, but Monday's was probably much smaller than 10 meters, he said.
Hmm...small, seemingly innocent meteors striking our planet. Too small for we humans to detect or be concerned about (if you think a 10 meter object is 'small').
Isn't this how the Gamilons put the Smack Down on Earth in "Star Blazers"?!? Small meteors that we didn't pay attention to at first, until their radiation began killing us off?!?
Sound the alarms!!!
Ready the Argo!!! (or Yamato for those in Japan)
Prepare to fire...the Waaaave Motion Gun!!!
Onward to Iscandar!!! -
Re:Star Blazers
Go to www.starblazers.com (the official homepage, according to the DVD boxes) and there's a link from there to watch episodes online. I tried it, but their connection is REALLY slow for some reason (atleast when using Windows Media).
Based on his e-mail addy, it appears his company either a) owns starblazers.com and runs it, or b) runs the 'watch on the internet' site (and that was what he was referring to), or c) both. =)

we're leaving Mother Earth, to save the human race
This is great news! But I can hardly believed that we actually discovered Wave Motion Energy without the help of Queen Starsha.

Starblazers available free online
As this
/. article pointed out a while back, the first few episodes are available online. If you don't want to click the link, they are at starblazers.com... of course Ranma would be really nice to see... but then it would be edited heavily... Well Eva would be nice too.... ah well, i can dream. -
Ho HumThis might be remotely cool if I cared anything about Speed Racer.
And for $300K? The only thing I'd pay that much for would be the Yamoto and its Wave Particle Gun.
