NoScript rocks (AdBlock no longer does & why)
"Ads can go to hell. I've had enough malware served up that I don't give a rat's ass about "ad revenue"." - by Anonymous Coward on Wednesday February 13, @09:10PM (#42891241)
Per my subject above: NoScript's FF's BEST addon, bar-none, but Adblock "just ain't what it used to be" (proofs below)!
Plus, "oddly enough" (lol, "not"), the advertisers + webmasters OMIT 1 VERY IMPORTANT FACT:
Fact being they not only INFECT you via adbanners (numerous examples below from reputable sources cited in that regard) BUT they also ROB YOU of your bandwidth/speed you PAID FOR MONTHLY TO YOUR ISP for online access! To the tune of 40% of the "weight" of every site online that displays ad banners no less on average!!!
I decided to do something about it, and you can too, should you elect to try this application I designed (works with a native tightly integrated feature of the IP stack itself in the hosts file @ ring 0/rpl 0/kernelmode via tcpip.sys, a driver, fast as it gets & right off the bat, making adblock REDUNDANT actually, since browsers & addons CANNOT operate without knowing where to go, first, & hosts load @ OS startup once the IP stack loads (@ bootup & fully on 1st request to the internet, in Windows &/or MacOS X)):

Good one: Here's more... apk
Sources for custom hosts file data for a myriad of purposes, all listed here (which THIS VERY PROGRAM uses):

P.S.=> Enjoy if you use the program I wrote above, & good on your part to see here that you have enough sense to take advantage of custom hosts files for better online speed, security, reliability, & of course, even better anonymity (to an extent, vs. DNS request logs OR vs. DNSBL's you may not like too)...

Which SECURES folks vs. known online threats of MANY kinds, and I've done security guides that do the same for Windows users since 1997! To wit:
To "immunize" a Windows system, I effectively use the principles in "layered security" possibles!
http://www.bing.com/search?q=%22HOW+TO+SECURE+Windows+2000%2FXP%22&go=&form=QBRE
I.E./E.G.-> I have done so since 1997-1998 with the most viewed, highly rated guide online for Windows security there really is which came from the fact I also created the 1st guide for securing Windows, highly rated @ NEOWIN (as far back as 1998-2001) here:
http://www.neowin.net/news/apk-a-to-z-internet-speedup--security-text
& from as far back as 1997 -> http://web.archive.org/web/20020205091023/www.ntcompatible.com/article1.shtml which Neowin above picked up on & rated very highly.
That has evolved more currently, into the MOST viewed & highly rated one there is for years now since 2008 online in the 1st URL link above...
Which has well over 500,000++ views online (actually MORE, but 1 site with 75,000 views of it went offline/out-of-business) & it's been made either:
---
1.) An Essential Guide
2.) 5-5 star rated
3.) A "sticky-pinned" thread
4.) Most viewed in the category it's in (usually security)
5.) Got me PAID by winning a contest @ PCPitStop (quite unexpectedly - I was only posting it for the good of all, & yes, "the Lord works in mysterious ways", it even got me PAID -> http://techtalk.pcpitstop.com/2007/09/04/pc-pitstop-winners/ (see January 2008))---
Across 15-20 or so sites I posted it on back in 2008... & here is the IMPORTANT part, in some sample testimonials to the "layered security" methodology efficacy:
---
SOME QUOTED TESTIMONIALS TO THE EFFECTIVENESS OF SAID LAYERED SECURITY GUIDE I AUTHORED:
"I recently, months ago when you finally got this guide done, had authorization to try this on simple work station for kids. My client, who paid me an ungodly amount of money to do this, has been PROBLEM FREE FOR MONTHS! I haven't even had a follow up call which is unusual." - THRONKA, user of my guide @ XTremePcCentral
AND
"APK, thanks for such a great guide. This would, and should, be an inspiration to such security measures. Also, the pc that has "tweaks": IS STILL GOING! NO PROBLEMS!" - THRONKA, user of my guide @ XTremePcCentral

APK Hosts File Engine 5.0++ 32/64-bit:

:)I've used Delphi since it's inception with GOOD reason (see my p.s. below & the link there).
It's an based on the Object-Pascal 7.x engine, building over their "OWL" (object windows libraries) in Pascal for Windows & the earlier "Turbo" series for DOS!
I got into it since version 1.0 in 16-bit, right into 2.x-7.x for 32-bit (again for great reasons noted below)...
I, the past 2 yrs now or so, have found Delphi XE-XE2 just as excellent for 64-bit in Windows, since it can do Mac stuff & even smartphone apps!
(Even porting to Linux even as a 'snap' via Kylix (discontinued by Borland, bad move imo, but oh well) & even to FreePascal & the Lazarus IDE... not a HUGE 'stretch' except for things like drive letters vs. mounted devices + some socket differences for online apps, etc.).
Delphi? Yes - It rocks!
APK
P.S.=> It was truly, the "VB Killer" & I too feel as you do to this very day, vs. MS offerings... I still like Visual Studio though, just NOT quite as much is all!
In fact, per what I stated above?
Here was EXACTLY why & what took me away from preferring Visual Studio in fact -> http://developers.slashdot.org/comments.pl?sid=3436053&cid=42799383
Yes - PURE performance, & 99.999% of all the power of MSVC++ with the "RAD" buildspeed of VB (in 1 box, so-to-speak)...
... apk
-
Agreed, & disagreed here... apk
DISAGREED SECTION HERE: (Somewhat on 'fine points' only though really)
1st - You can go back FARTHER to DOS with VB in fact, & yes, it was "VISUAL" (first of all) & to an extent, "RAD" (rapid application development). I used it in version 2.0 in fact for quick app development in the Microsoft world.
Secondly - VB for Windows (3.0 onwards) was decent, & @ the risk of sounding like some California surfer? TOTALLY "RAD"... but not so great for db access as its later versions where & only 16-bit...
3rd: It + its descendants have had MORE successful deliveries of projects than almost any other IDE for Microsoft because it was simpler to use...
Mind you - that doesn't translate out as "bad" in the world of business OR in the eyes of mgt., especially when venture capitalists or departmental monies are on the line either gents where deadline penalties can ensue... after all - it's YOUR PAY on the line boys, & payroll IS the easiest cost to control (ever heard of 'downsizing' for example?).
(Fact - for most, meaning MSVC++ due to difficulty level, yes meaning things like pointers usage, & especially VC++ 2.x on downwards which wasn't really "RAD" & neither was a LOT of "OWL" from Borland too!)
Back then with those tools? Well, imo @ least where to do a high speed Windows app, you had to do things like write your own messagepassing schedulers & more...
I hated it compared to VB 3.0 onwards & especially VB 4-5-6 which intro'd for BOTH 16 & 32-bit development & had full-blown DB access built in via @ the very least, MS' OLE-DB &/or ODBC (a form of COM db access in the former).
---
AGREED 110% SECTION HERE:
Delphi did rock them all though!
Yes - THAT I can & will agree with wholeheartedly & with solid proof (see below)...
Fact is - I still extensively use it, as do MANY others worldwide, & especially for "personal projects" such as this one -> http://www.start64.com/index.php?option=com_content&id=5851:apk-hosts-file-engine-64bit-version&Itemid=74
APK
P.S.=> So, per my mentioned 'note' above? How BADLY did Delphi rock MS' stuff? Ok, verifiable & undeniable concrete evidence:
Back circa 1997, I was a BIG fan of coding with Visual Studio... especially MSVC++ &/or VB.
I run into a review in VBPJ, of all places (Visual Basic Programmer's Journal) Sept./Oct. 1997 issue "Inside the VB Compiler", a competing trade rag no less & one that was QUITE respected!
Then?
There, I saw Borland Delphi LITERALLY "knock-the-chocolate" outta MS' offerings, overall, in performance...
How much so? Ok (& this IS what I took to mgt.):
In the 6 tests given, Delphi won the majority (overwhelmingly in fact, in what ALL PROGRAMS DO, math & strings work)...
Specifics below (the most important, overall? Again - imo @ least - What they ALL do - math & strings!):
---
STRING SUITE:
Delphi =
.275ms
MSVC++ = .500ms
MSVB = 4.091ms---
MATH SUITE:
Delphi = 1.523ms
MSVC++ = 2.890ms
MSVB = 7.071ms* AGAIN - note what I said above? Even while I was a HUGE fan of MS' Visual Studio?? I couldn't "argue with the numbers" here, & gravitated towards a BETTER coding environs in Delphi, by far, for performance alone!
---
API GRAPHICS METHODS SUITE:
Delphi =
.269ms
MSVC++ = .293ms
MSVB = 292---
TEXTBOX FORM LOADING SUITE:
MSVC++ =

MSVB = .072ms---

Delphi = .495m -
I admit being racist - against ALL banner ads!

DNS = faulty (hosts fix it)... apk
As well as gaining you superior speed, security, reliability, & even "anonymity" to an extent (vs. DNS request logs, & yes, the ability to bypass DNSBL's (dns block lists) you may not agree with too):

APK Hosts File Engine 5.0++ 32/64-bit:
Which, if you read the list of what it can do for you as an end user of the resulting output it produces listed in the link above, you'll understand how/why...
"It's as strong as steel, & a 3rd of the weight" - Howard Stark from the film "Captain America"
---
Vs. even DNS servers too (which hosts files can supplement to overcome THEIR shortcomings, as follows):
---
A.) Running another program (sometimes in usermode no less, far, Far, FAR slower than kernelmode by many orders of magnitude & easily attacked) vs. the single hosts file (tightly integrated into the IP stack itself as part of it). ADDING COMPLEXITY & MORE "moving parts" room for error & breakdown!
B.) Wasting CPU cycles, RAM memory, & other forms of I/O to do what a single file can do
C.) Wasting ELECTRICITY (especially if the DNS server is setup as a separate machine) even if run as a service/daemon on a single system as user has
D.) DNS has NUMEROUS faults, & should anyone request a sampling of them? Ask & "ye shall receive" (see my 'p.s.' below...).
---
Resulting in security AND in saving your bandwidth & giving you FASTER host-domain name resolution locally vs. remote DNS servers, especially if a NXDOMAIN results!
Since you do it LOCALLY via verified hardcoded hosts file entries of your favorites, which also gets you speed too as noted), simply to overcome that flaw & others!
Hosts files hardcodes are not only faster, but safer too, simply since my program uses reverse DNS hardcoded entries tests, to the in arpa addr 'tld' that houses that information from the DNSSEC root 13 servers - which are secured vs. that flaw noted above in redirect poisonings (& others)
---
AND, especially vs. competing alternate 'solutions', noted below in AdBlock/Ghostery & yes even DNS servers, next, as 'examples thereof'...
Solutions that used to be good & I even recommended them in security guides I wrote up over the decades now -> http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&tbo=d&output=search&sclient=psy-ab&q=%22HOW+TO+SECURE+Windows+2000/XP%22&btnG=Submit&gbv=1&sei=ka3yUKzxB-6_0QHLroCQCA

Technically unjustified downmods = invalid
They're the "best you've got" instead of disproving this -> http://news.slashdot.org/comments.pl?sid=3424523&cid=42760269 and the points I listed there, with concrete, verifiable, & UNDENIABLE documentation from reputable sources too, no less!

:)(I know it, YOU KNOW IT, & you show it by doing a "hit & run" downmod with no valid critique & disproving of the points I posted - you only show others that, & they CAN read, you know, & will know it too IF they don't already!)
Seriously - your unjustifiable downmods = weak!
How?
In *trying* in vain, to "hide" my post thus with hit & run downmods...)
That won't work either - As most folks here browse FAR below the default level to see all posts, & rightfully so!
(Especially since the "so-called 'moderation system'" here is busted, & hides AC posts like mine by default... "gosh, I wonder WHY?" (lol, NOT)).
The link to my program lists all of what custom hosts files can do for an end-user of them in better speed, security, reliability, & even anonymity to an extent + a LOT more!

There is NO 'hiding' that or *trying* to, via unjustifiable downmods, is there? I also certainly do NOT see others disproving my points either... lol!

P.S.=> Bottom-line: 1st of all, to whoever downmodded me & ran (not even disproving my points on custom hosts files' superiority over other flawed or crippled methods?)
Thanks, actually!
Secondly - Thanks for proving my point, AND MY PREDICTION of an "instant downmod" of my post regarding custom hosts files too, as I knew it would be and WHY -> http://news.slashdot.org/comments.pl?sid=3424523&cid=42760269

PERTINENT QUOTE/EXCERPT:
"Now - I truly KNOW this post will no doubt be downmodded, because Advertisers do NOT want this type of information getting out en-masse to enlighten users - they bought out Ghostery, crippled Adblock, but TRY THAT with a local hosts file (good luck!) especially one a user builds himself!" - http://news.slashdot.org/comments.pl?sid=3424523&cid=42760269

Since you show us "that's the 'best you've got'" & nothing more, lol...
However - Anyone with 1/2 a brain realizes that bogus downmods aren't justifiable when my points are solid & correct + backed by citations & documentations from reputable sources and yes, facts!
(And, they are invalid in your bogus downmods since you show us that much, downmodding troll, via your 'hit & run downmod'... period, lol!).
Custom hosts files show their superiority over other methods by:
---
1.) Gaining you added speed you PAID for & are losing, to the tune of 40% of most webpages on average due to adbanners bulk, processing required, & being bushwhacked per this article too no less!
(and for your monies you pay out to ISPs monthly, by getting more bandwidth instead of 40% of your webpages clotted & slowed down by adbanners)
2.) Added security (blocking out known malicious threats online)
3.) Added reliability (over DNS servers, unpatched for 1/2 a decade vs. the Kaminsky redirect flaw no less MOSTLY WORLDWIDE (except the root 13 DNSS

To wit, 10++ things AdBlock can't do, hosts can:

1.) Blocking rogue DNS servers malware makers use
2.) Blocking known sites/servers that serve up malware... like known sites/servers/hosts-domains that serve up malicious scripts
3.) Speeding up your FAVORITE SITES that hosts can speed up via hardcoded line item entries properly resolved by a reverse DNS ping
4.) AdBlock works on Mozilla products (browser & email), hosts work on ANY webbound app AND are multiplatform.
5.) AdBlock can't protect external to FireFox email programs, hosts can (think OUTLOOK, Eudora, & others)
6.) AdBlock can't help you blow past DNSBL's (DNS block lists)
7.) AdBlock can't help you avoid DNS request logs (hosts can via hardcoded favorites)
8.) AdBlock can't protect you vs. TRACKERS (hosts can)
9.) AdBlock can't protect you vs. DOWNED or "DNS-poisoned" redirected DNS servers (hosts can by hardcodes)
10.) Hosts are EASIER to manage, they're just a text file (adblock means you had BEST know your javascript, perl, & python (iirc as to what languages are used to make it from source)).

You admit it right there, and? Well, for sure, it's BETTER THAN RELYING ON A WORLD FULL OF UNPATCHED DNS SERVERS VS. THE KAMINSKY BUG when they're SET IN RECURSIVE MODE, for sure...
Which doing hardcodes avoiding DNS simply solves having to depends on potentially compromised DNS servers due to be unpatched vs. the Kaminsky bug, bypasses them completely!

Did I once say you could? No!... apk

What DOES stop that though?
See above!
The output from that app does - Custom hosts files via hardcodes of favorite sites for bypassing DNS do and many other things, see that link, it enumerates them...
(NO questions asked, because they bypass DNS servers!)
Fact/Period!
PLUS - Hey - I am ONLY here trying to help (but as usual, with techie geeks *trying* to take on guys like me that build the tools you merely USE, & are helpless without? I was attacked... & that's ok too - I triumph as always in the end!).
Geeks have TROUBLE with 'geek angst' when dusted by facts, & his name tossing showed it directed my way - the 1st sign of FAIL usually & proof of my points when theirs are in grave error!
(Oh, I toss a few but only after I floored his points... rightfully!)
Bottom-line: This entire discussion, proves it, along with my providing a working solution vs. it until servers are patched (but 1/2 a decade later vs. the Kaminsky flaw? Doubt they will be, ever... sad!)
Now, Stalk? Above ALL else:
I just KNOW it's you replying by ac instead of your registered 'luser' account here... lol, you're not fooling me on that account either!

HOWEVER - At least you tried Stalk! I'll give you that, nobody else had the balls... you just ran into "Mr. Kowalski" ala Gran Torino (lol, per my quote I used) is all!

FACT, since it's hardcoding of favorite sites bypasses DNS compromisable servers (the majority of which are STILL unpatched per this article)...
Also/yes: That allows FASTER resolutions as well as protection vs. remote DNS (& uses less resources than local ones & certainly less moving parts for breakdown) & especially using my "math trick" as you called it... another FACT!
You couldn't dispute that, or any of it, & did yourself in... beating me? Hey - it's be IMPOSSIBLE to do & especially on this topic!
APK
P.S.=> You can *try* all you like to "shit" on me, but you defeating yourself shit on you... did that to yourself here in this exchange, I merely schooled you, as I did those "antivirus pro experts" you noted, and you are welcome to verify it... it's fact!
AGAIN & FOR THE 4th TIME NOW SO IT SINKS IN (& you realize you are NOT in my league):
Remember:: You're the one that posted BOGUS incorrect hosts data too here mind you attempting to MISLEAD others imo -> http://it.slashdot.org/comments.pl?sid=3417867&cid=42737625 lol!
(THAT was hillarious & a HUGE BLUNDER on YOUR end... bigtime!)
Give up your "geek angst"!
Sooner or later, you run into a "bad motor scooter" in life (even in street fights, even though you *think* you're 'tough as a nail' there's always someone bigger, faster, stronger & better... that's me!)
To quote my namesake, Mr. Kowalski, from the film "Grand Torino":
EVER NOTICE THAT EVERY ONCE IN AWHILE, YOU COME ACROSS SOMEONE YOU SHOULDN'T HAVE FUCKED WITH? THAT'S ME!
Fact - You have failed vs. "yours truly" on TONS of levels (even speed in hashtable indexing or btree seeks vs. my smart placement in hosts files)... & of course?
There's NO QUESTION hardcoded hosts file entries bypass these compromisable DNS servers... most important point of all, as it can "proof" a user vs. this type of exploit... period!

You're merely a USER of what guys like ME create for "your low kind" to merely USE, user - without us, & what WE know? YOU ARE HELPLESS & YOU KNOW IT!)
Fact! One you MAY not like, but fact!
You didn't & don't even UNDERSTAND how binary trees & b-tree seeks + hashtable indexing works, & how my smart placement of hosts data for favorites hardcoded (which again, mind you, solved this DNS issue easily, fact again) works to beat them!
That is funny but then again, it's not... it's the big diff. between guys like me & guys like you!
AGAIN:
My app does too via applying read-only/write-protect attributes to hosts as well, ONTOP of UAC & MS Security Essentials PROTECTING THE HOSTS FILE!
What's protecting YOUR dns & data? ZERO!
Thus, again - My app ends up supplementing more security via the best thing we have going vs. online threats: "layered-security"/"defense-in-depth"... period!
(It does so, every 500ms, & NO programs' or malware-in-general that's NOT a driver powered rootkit's going to get past that, since the timer registered with the OS is as 'fast as it gets' in usermode, period!)

However - if you want to be wasteful, ala this list of DNS ineffficiencies vs. hosts I wrote up, all fact & I dusted one of your fellow naysayers on it above? That's up to you... I can lead a horse to water, I can't make him drink after all:
"DNS Servers are also (inefficient apk):
1.) MORE "moving parts" complex in services/daemons, & front-ends to them

5.) Wasteful of RAM (data is larger, see that DNSBL I put out)
6.) Wasteful of other forms of I/O too
7.) Room for more "breakdown" in their parts in DNS since there ARE more 'moving parts' involved, especially programs (hosts are merely a text file filter for the IP stack itself)
9.) Hosts are an integrated part of the IP stack itself, running in Ring 0/RPL 0/kernelmode & merely a filter for it (which the IP stack has over 40++ yrs. of optimization & refinement put into it, as well as hardening vs. compromise)
10.) :)APK
P.S.=> Let's also NOT FORGET THE PREMISE OF THIS ARTICLE, since 5++ yrs. later, the KAMINSKY BUG IS UNPATCHED on DNS SERVERS WORLDWIDE - thus, compromisable!
What SOLVES it?
Custom hosts, via hardcodes especially + vs. other known malicious sites-servers/hosts-domains online (and trackers, phishers, spammers, bogus DNS servers, botnet C&C servers etc.), & automagically, via my application:
---
APK Hosts File Engine 5.0++ 32/64-bit:
---
By providing updated custom hosts file information REGULARLY automagically if one wishes OR manually in minutes no less (also autoprotecting the hosts file via write-protect attributes supplementing UAC protection as well which hosts files have since VISTA onwards)...
And, with less moving parts (especially local DNS servers that are wasteful, more complex in file data, more moving parts room for error & more, listed above), vs. your "facts" which ARE in error (by omission too see above)...
... apk
-
On your 2nd point? Here's where you fail... apk
"2. By setting up your malicious content to use random subdomains, like a4bacd4adef.domain.com renders any host files useless as they can't possibly list every permutation." - by Stalks (802193) * on Wednesday January 30, @03:42AM (#42735631)
I don't fail here - you do: My application:
---
APK Hosts File Engine 5.0++ 32/64-bit:
---
Gets them, yes - even the types you noted (the fastflux & SPF types (algorithmically added types too, with names tacking on #'s randomly or in order, either way)) FROM MY SOURCES IN THE SECURITY COMMUNITY & right away as they get them...
Auto-magically/no effort, often as you like manually (or you can setup my app to draw new data every 12 hours if you wish).
Additionally - you failed your 1st "so-called 'point'" as well on your ALLEGED "inefficiencies" in hosts files vs. DNS here & badly -> http://it.slashdot.org/comments.pl?sid=3417867&cid=42736287
(Simply since hosts entries data are FAR smaller than DNS entries in DNSBL's, no questions asked - your data required is LARGER, hands-down, undeniably).
DNS servers are also:
1.) MORE "moving parts" complex in services/daemons, & front-ends to them
2.) MORE complex in entries necessary (and knowledge for it)
3.) Wasteful of CPU cycles due to more parts
4.) Wasteful of ELECTRICITY (due to extra moving parts)
5.) Wasteful of RAM (data is larger, see that DNSBL I put out)
6.) Wasteful of other forms of I/O too
7.) Room for more "breakdown" in their parts in DNS since there ARE more 'moving parts' involved, especially programs (hosts are merely a text file filter for the IP stack itself)
9.) Hosts are an integrated part of the IP stack itself, running in Ring 0/RPL 0/kernelmode & merely a filter for it (which the IP stack has over 40++ yrs. of optimization & refinement put into it, as well as hardening vs. compromise)
10.) I've seen DNS servers that run in far, Far, FAR SLOWER Ring 3/RPL 3/usermode as well vs. kernelmode & the IP stack as noted in point #9Above ALL else, per this article's example?
DNS = COMPROMISABLE (per this article & other means noted @ the tail end of my initial post, do refer to that in its termination/'p.s.' section, here -> http://it.slashdot.org/comments.pl?sid=3417867&cid=42729809 )
Hosts solve that too - easily: Since 'hardcoded' entries of your favorite sites you go to is possible in them, avoiding potentially compromised DNS servers totally!
This also allows FASTER resolution of IP addresses from host-domain names, by far (especially to remote DNS servers, & especially if they come up NXDOMAIN) also, & local custom hosts allow TOTAL end-user control - remote DNS does not!

I don't use a registered 'luser' account... no need, as again, I have better things to do than live for karma points on a forums! See below...
Above all else: What I do know, is that what you said 'fell apart' vs. my list of upmods here -> http://it.slashdot.org/comments.pl?sid=3417867&cid=42731467
Fact!

Ask!).
Anyhow/anyways:
However, unlike others who don't HAVE anything BETTER to do (lol, like "live for karma points" on a forums)?
As you can see: I am out doing what's right, & right by others too -> http://www.start64.com/index.php?option=com_content&id=5851:apk-hosts-file-engine-64bit-version&Itemid=74 by producing a useful program!

How custom hosts files help vs. DNS flaws... apk

Adblock's INFERIOR to hosts files

"Visual Studio and Xcode are bloated jokes in comparison." - by 0xdeadbeef (28836) on Sunday January 27, @05:45PM (#42710549) Homepage
Especially its descendant Borland Delphi (really Object Pascal 7.0 iirc): I learned it right after BASIC & COBOL, but just before C/C++/Fortran in fact... & it took me away from them (for personal projects, absolutely - but @ work? You do what you're told + use what they do of course... more on that below too!).
Delphi =
.275ms
MSVC++ = .500ms
MSVB = 4.091ms---
MATH SUITE:
Delphi = 1.523ms
MSVC++ = 2.890ms
Delphi =
.269ms
MSVC++ = .293ms
MSVB = 292---
TEXTBOX FORM LOADING SUITE:
MSVC++ =
.012ms
Delphi = .069ms
MSVB = .072ms---
ACTIVE X FORM LOADS:
MSVB =
.114ms
Delphi = .495ms
MSVC++ = .778ms---
NATIVE TO LANGUAGE GRAPHICS METHODS SUITE:
MSVC++ =
.293ms
MSVB = .455ms
Delphi = .503ms---
There you are... however: KNOW WHAT I WAS TOLD, that I absolutely HAD TO LISTEN TO & UNDERSTAND (which, I did):
---
"Microsoft has BILLIONS of dollars & absolute stability. We want to have SOMEONE to take responsibility for errors in their stuff, and to have support in the future. Microsoft odds are WILL BE THERE STILL... Will Borland?"
---
THAT IS BUSINESS' POV in a nutshell... & Borland was getting "brain-drained" (especially for the designers of Delphi) by MS regularly... ever heard of Mr. Anders Heijelsberg &/or Chuck Andrzewski? They built Delphi... & MS got 'em!

QUESTION: How's my post off topic?
Hosts = a valid work-around per the source article, & I posted this -> http://www.start64.com/index.php?option=com_content&id=5851:apk-hosts-file-engine-64bit-version&Itemid=74 which is ALL ABOUT custom hosts files, & what they can do for you as the end user of them to your benefit on a myriad of levels...
* It's like getting a turbo-charger for speed, quadruple your websurfing mileage/bandwidth back, a suit of armor vs. online threats, better reliability vs. DNS outages + redirect poisonings, & even better anonymity to an extent vs. DNSBL's & DNS request logs (lessening loads on those though, so "bonus" server-side to them on that account - less usage).
It works... & yes, IS on topic, because it provides the cure:
"Did a traceroute and this reveals an expected result. It is really the DNS which returns a wrong value Ã(TM)59.24.3.173Ã instead of the expected Ã(TM)207.97.227.239Ã, so it looks like a dns poisoning attempt or some other dns issue. Editing your
/etc/hosts file or using opendns can help in this case." - FROM -> http://thenextweb.com/asia/2013/01/21/the-chinese-government-appears-to-have-completely-blocked-github-via-dns/1 that's EASILY end-iser "manual-shift" controlled & made easier so for end users in a multithreaded self-contained single 'stand-alone' executable (pretty sure it could be considered portable too)!

It's useful for stopping that, & NOT for raising priority only either, but quite the reverse also!
See - the front end is ONLY A REPORTER: It doesn't NEED to be high, normal, or even below normal priority - there are TIMES IT'S GOOD TO BE LOW even (see next)!
Lowering priority is important in these conditions!
It's more for when they add features the commercial "bigboys" have like Diskeeper, PerfectDisk, O&O Defrag etc./et al:
For LOWERING priority when it's minimized to tray or otherwise (along with stopping display generation of outputs wasting cycles if it is NOT VISIBLE onscreen - that is a waste & drag on the system overall and the app too)
or
FOR running in the background as a scheduled task!
I do it - it works! I have to write them on that much, for when they add those types of features to be more 'competitive' vs. the big boys noted above...

Especially Stefan Pendl, who I don't *think* realizes THAT benefit on lowering CPU & when to do it, & also of course, its ability to help solve their issue noted above by Dmitri, the founder of the project itself...

Doesn't matter (he couldn't get to me)
APK Hosts File Engine 5.0++ 32/64-bit:
Which, if you read the list of what it can do for you as an end user of the resulting output it produces, you'll understand how/why...
"It's as strong as steel, & a 3rd of the weight" - Howard Stark from the film "Captain America"
( Vs. competing alternate 'solutions', noted below, next, as 'examples thereof'... )
Solutions that used to be good & I even recommended them in security guides I wrote up over the decades now for Windows users, for "layered-security"/"defense-in-depth" purposes - the BEST THING WE HAVE GOING vs. threats of all kinds, currently!
(Not anymore though as far as AdBlock's concerned, not after this):
---
Adblock Plus To Offer 'Acceptable Ads' Option
http://news.slashdot.org/story/11/12/12/2213233/adblock-plus-to-offer-acceptable-ads-option
---
Plus, adblock CAN'T DO AS MUCH & not from a single file solution that runs in Ring 0/RPL 0/kernelmode via tcpip.sys, a driver (since it's part of the IP stack & tightly integrated into it). To wit, 10 things AdBlock can't do, hosts can:
---
1.) Blocking rogue DNS servers malware makers use
& more... as a tiny 'sampling' & proofs thereof!
---
Same with Ghostery:
---
Evidon, which makes Ghostery, is an advertising company.
They were originally named Better Advertising, Inc., but changed their name for obvious PR reasons.
Despite the name change, let's be clear on one thing: their goal still is building better advertising, not protecting consumer privacy.
Evidon bought Ghostery, an independent privacy tool that had a good reputation.
They took a tool that was originally for watching the trackers online, something people saw as a legitimate privacy tool, and users were understandably concerned.
The company said they were just using Ghostery for research.
Turns out they had relationships with a bunch of ad companies and were compiling data from which sites you visited when you were using Ghostery, what trackers were on those sites, what ads they were, etc., and building a database to monetize.
When confronted about it, they made their tracking opt-in and called it GhostRank, which is how it exists today.
They took an open-source type tool, bought it, turned it from something thatâ(TM)s actually protecting people from the ad industry, to something where the users are actually providing data to the adve

It's better than walled gardens & how/why
http://betanews.com/2012/01/25/the-top-10-web-security-threats-you-should-avoid/
Pertinent quote/excerpt:
---
"The compromised website is still the most effective attack vector for hackers to install malware on your computer with 47.6 percent of all malware installs occurring in that manner, says security firm AVG.
Another 10.6 percent are tricked into downloading exploit code -- many times, without their knowledge -- by clicking on links on pages to sites hosting malware...
It also found that faked pharmacy sites are a popular attack method, seen in about 10.4 percent of all attacks.
Fake antivirus scanners remain a popular malware injection method at 8.4 percent"
---
* Fact is, what I noted, in compromised sites, comprises 77% of malware installations - not what users download & install themselves (ala shareware/freeware sites like download.com etc./et al)...
APK
P.S.=> That's the TOUGH part - the 'driveby download attack' in maliciously scripted sites, bad links to sites, etc.-et al, & why I built this app:
---
APK Hosts File Engine 5.0++ 32/64-bit:
---
It speeds you up, makes you surf more reliably, but mostly more SAFELY (you can't get burned by what you can't touch)...
It works, to STOP USERS from 'hitting' or rather, being HIT, on known maliciously scripted hosts-domains/servers/sites... & it's updated every 15 minutes here in a 'special build' I use, but users can do it every 12 hours on THEIR end using it.
The rest of what I do?
"Std. layered security/defense-in-depth" ala these guides I've done online since 1997-2008 for Windows users -> http://www.bing.com/search?q=%22HOW+TO+SECURE+Windows+2000%2FXP%22&go=&form=QBRE
HOWEVER: What I personally find VERY EFFECTIVE vs. the 'driveby attack' on sites with malicious code or bogus bad links? In COMBINATION with blocking I do in custom hosts files noted above??
Opera & it's "By Site Preferences"... how so?? Ok:
By ONLY allowing scripting, cookies, plugins, frames/iframes, javascript, java, etc. on SOME sites only that REQUIRE THEM FOR FULL FUNCTION!
The rest are in global policy, disallowing their usage (lessening the chance of attack since those items are OFTEN exploited, massively)...

How I use BOTH custom hosts & DNS... apk
"That is why you should use a white-list private dns server" - by Anonymous Coward on Monday January 07, @12:36PM (#42506751)
Why should I run a DNS server @ home?
As a separate machine it would EAT UP ELECTRICITY, & truly add complexity I don't NEED!
On my single home system?
It would do the same, as well as eat up CPU cycles, RAM, & other forms of I/O for something I don't need vs. what the combination of custom hosts files (which yes, overcome some issues on DNS like dns poisoning, dns servers going down, slower resolutions from remote DNS) & yes, on the single system I have (@ home)!
---
IMPORTANT: & I can't stress THIS enough!
Also PER MY SUBJECT-LINE ABOVE, which is what I *think* you all mess up on, as to HOW I USE CUSTOM HOSTS FILES?
CLUE: I don't ATTEMPT to have every single host-domain name in existence resolved to IP address here!
What DO I ACTUALLY DO?
I 'hardcode in' only my 20 top favorites sites in it!
The rest of its entries are blocked out KNOWN malicious sites/servers/hosts-domains that serve up malicious script code, malware, phishing/spamming, adbanners, & such (which eat your bandwidth you pay for, as well as poison you).
Once more - I hardcode in where I spend 95% or more of my time online (for reliability vs. downed or DNS poisoned DNS servers, and for faster resolution from local address once they are reverse DNS pinged for proper resolution).
AND?
I use Filtering DNS servers I use (secured vs. malware, malicious scripted sites, phishing/spamming & more) external to my home:

* Especially since Borland Delphi 3/5/7 in the 32-bit world initially helped me create that program that has MYRIAD BENEFITS to end users of it, on many levels (builds I kept to myself in 32-bit, circa late 2003/2005/2008 iirc), & also NUMEROUS other apps I & others wrote too, did well using Pascal!
I have done others that have done well over time in commercially sold software, freeware/shareware, & things that helped me do well in trade shows in the art & science of computing (like MS Tech Ed) too - written in Pascal in Windows via Delphi - I only continued on using it in 64-bit above as well via RAD studio by Embarcadero (Delphi XE2 & C++ Builder) in the 64-bit world lately as well, since it's "all that" & THAT good (see below, again - you WILL find it useful perhaps in posts on Pascal & interesting as well, if not ENLIGHTENING - it was to me, & took me from other languages, as favorite at least)...

P.S.=> I.E.-> It's the BEST of C++ & VB really, in 1 box... & early on, it was KNOWN as the "VB KILLER"... how/why?
This test resultset from (of all places) "VBPJ" (Visual Basic Programmer's Journal) issue Sept./Oct. 1997 "Inside the VB5 Compiler"...
Delphi =
.275ms
MSVC++ = .500ms
MSVB = 4.091ms---
MATH SUITE:
Delphi = 1.523ms
MSVC++ = 2.890ms
Delphi =
.269ms
MSVC++ = .293ms
MSVB = 292---
TEXTBOX FORM LOADING SUITE:
MSVC++ =
.012ms
Delphi -
Agreed 110% with example of inspiration
As well as results academically + athletically too (from the fundamentals comics gave me) -> http://entertainment.slashdot.org/comments.pl?sid=3347977&cid=42425967
ABSOLUTELY AGREED #1 of 2 - changed for the BETTER, forever:
"Stan, you are a force of nature, and the people's lives you've so willingly touched are changed forever. I know I was, and I know that I love this fellow we call Stan Lee. I wish him all the best now, and in the next phase of his existence" - by markstrelecki (1378435) on Sunday December 30, @02:49AM (#42424945) Homepage
Yes, absolutely - they inspired me @ a fundamental level both academically & believe-it-or-not, athletically also, with "proofs thereof" in the links below as well!

ABSOLUTELY AGREED #2 of 2 - changed for the BETTER, forever:
"Stan showed me that being creative and passionate is the duty of the intelligent mind, and in his honor I will always say "Excelsior!" MARK STRELECKI Atlanta, GA. USA" - by markstrelecki (1378435) on Sunday December 30, @02:49AM (#42424945) Homepage
Agreed #2 - Since when the malware 'explosion' started 'hitting' bad, 2008 onwards? I re-released this security guide for Windows users, MUCH upgraded (& said it was folks' "IRON MAN ARMOR" online per the great film starring Robert Downey Jr. -> http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&tbo=d&output=search&sclient=psy-ab&q=%22HOW+TO+SECURE+Windows+2000/XP%22&btnG=Submit&gbv=1&sei=lF_gULeDA-nO0QHFmoDYAw
(MAINLY to "do the right thing" - which is WHAT comics instill in you 'morally' I felt @ least)...
Then also?
Last year, this as well -> http://start64.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=5851:apk-hosts-file-engine-64bit-version&catid=26:64bit-security-software&Itemid=74
(As folks' "Captain America Shield" online, more-or-less, for lack of a better analogy here, after seeing the excellent film "Captain America: The First Avenger" - just to supplement the security guide above & make the end result output EASY to acquire & build for them - ALL for better speed, reliability, SECURITY MOST OF ALL, & lots more also... )
The films "Captain America", "Iron Man", & "The Avengers" helped 'reinspire me' to re-enter the freeware software circuit again (after a 7++ yr. absence thereof)...
Mainly since things are getting SO bad online with exploits galore, & because of comics? Yes, because of them early on, I have the ability to hopefully help change them to a degree, & hopefully, for the better (and comics provided the means @ a fundamental level, to get to where I had to be, to acquire the ability to do so).
They also helped me morally as well. They are about "doing the right thing" largely, in their tales!

P.S.=> Yes, Comics inspired me as a both & helped me academically, HUGELY, & even athletically... even morally (since to get them, I had to bicycle MANY miles to do so, along with candy too of course, lol)...
