Finding Independently Produced TV Shows?
bornagainpenguin writes "Slashdot recently reported that Stargate Universe was canceled, taking with it yet another of the vanishingly smaller network Sci-Fi shows to watch on TV. In the comments of that story someone mentioned Pioneer One as an alternative to traditional network series. I'm downloading it now and looking forward to seeing it, but I'm wondering what else is available that is independently produced and has a greater emphasis on plot and actually finishing the story? I'm already a fan of efforts like Batman: City of Scars, Starwreck: In the Pirkinning, and Star Trek: Phase II so I know that great things are possible, I just don't know where to find them! Can you help by making some recommendations?" -
Iron Sky Trailer
John Buckman from Magnatune clues us that the trailer for Iron Sky is available. We've been following the production for some time, as these are the same guys who brought us Star Wreck, the most successful feature-length Internet-distributed film of all time. That film was made by 3,000 people, has been downloaded 8 million times, is under a Creative Commons by-nd-nc license, and made good money both through DVD sales and through an eventual deal with Universal. Iron Sky is being made using Wreck-a-Movie — a collaborative film-making web site (also Creative Commons based) that grew out of the Star Wreck experience." -
Star Wreck Creators Announce Iron Sky
An anonymous reader writes "The makers of the Star Trek and Babylon 5 cross-over spoof Star Wreck: In the Pirkinning have announced their upcoming movie Iron Sky. It's apparently another sci-fi comedy with its own universe. Says Director Timo Vuorensola: 'It is still an open question whether it will be distributed also for free. We would very much like it, but it will depend a lot on the financiers.'" -
Fictionalized Storylines Absent from Podcasts?
goldenglove asks: "With the recent boom of Podcasts online, there seems to be a glaring hole when you try to search for free podcasts that have fictionalized stories, and semi-concrete plotlines. The podcast videocast scene seems to be saturated with content that is about news or about personal life, centralizing around information rather than entertainment. Why is this? The only exceptions I've found are the recently released Marcus Hates His Job free TV show sponsored by Sprite, and the Finnish distributed movie: StarWreck -- although entertaining, a very thin selection. Does Slashdot have any recommendations of uninhibited, undiscovered content in this field?" -
Star Trek Spoof Top Finnish Movie
Dotnaught writes to tell us Reuters is reporting that the science fiction spoof "Star Wreck: in the Pirkinning" has become Finland's most viewed movie. From the article: " [...] relying on free distribution over the Internet to reach more than 3 million viewers in less than two months. "Star Wreck: In the Pirkinning" is a full-length feature in Finnish with English subtitles. It was made by a group of students and other amateur film makers with a bare-bones budget and a few home computers to create elaborate special effects." -
Star Wreck Released as Download
Arto Rantala writes "After seven years of production, Star Wreck: In The Pirkinning, the Finnish Star Trek / Babylon 5 parody movie, was finally released on DVD a month ago and is now available for download. In spite of its practically zero budget, the film has a hilariously captivating story, top notch CGI and even a couple of performances from professional actors. Download it now and buy the DVD if you like it! I know I did. You can also obtain it directly from the .torrent" -

Star Wreck Trailer
ultramarweeni writes "'Star Wreck: In the Pirkinning', a very fascinating feature-length Finnish Star Trek satire is now nearing its completion. Today, December 13th, the trailer was published at 0:00 GMT after 14 hours of technical problems. Star Wreck: In the Pirkinning tells the story of the crew of P-Fleet starship C.P.P. Kickstart, which was stranded on Earth after an accident after a battle against the Korg. With the help of the technology to come, their leader, Captain Pirk claims himself as the emperor of the Earth. He conquers the world and rebuilds the P-Fleet. Star Wreck: In the Pirkinning has been in the making since 1999 and will probably be completed in spring 2004. Or maybe not. Time will tell."
