I call BS
I have a small business, legally registered, which is a sole proprietorship. Even though my business is legal and even though I'm personally legally responsible for the business I cannot get this green bar.
I'm not impressed. Did you even look at how much these certs cost? They cost $1300.00 per year.
If you are so eager to pay $1300/yr for an SSL cert, certainly you can handle the $60/yr to have a real, incorporated business. -

Go read Article I, paying special attention to Section 8. What in there gives Congress the power to legislate in either of those two areas?
If nothing else it is a federal constitution, and anything that isn't specificly delegated to the federation itself is something left to the states to decide, which is why things like marriage licenses or driver's licenses are issued by a state and given "full faith and credit" by the other states.
The reason why the Bush administration wants to pass a constitutional amendment restricting the definition of marriage is because that's the only way the federal government is allowed to get involved. (A truly conservative, "strict constructionist" president would be more interested in a constitutional amendment restricting the definition of "interstate commerce," but then California would be growing marijuana...)
I will grant that, especially in light of the Fourteenth Amendment, the US Constitution serves as a list of things state governments can't do while affirming their power to do anything else (Tenth Amendment), but the states themselves also have their own constitutions to abide by. In the case of Delaware:The free communication of thoughts and opinions is one of the invaluable rights of man. The press shall be free to every citizen who undertakes to examine the official conduct of persons acting in a public capacity(.)
Without the anonymity, this blogger would have his or her freedom to criticize public officials curtailed, a freedom guaranteed by the Delaware Constitution.
Just because both major parties have gotten away with abusing powers granted to the United States for their own political ends doesn't make those acts constitutional. -

Yea, tell that to the cops who cry for it when they're trying to do report narratives or warrants without spell check.
And FWIW, there is at least one large police agency in the US that makes extensive use of OpenOffice. Mine. We started deploying it in our patrol cars about 2 years ago and now have about 350 MDC's on the street, all with OpenOffice, add to that the 400 or so that we've configured for the smaller police departments in the state, and we're close to 800 users with an OSS app.
It's getting the the point where officers come in to teach at the academy and they presentaitons are done in Impress rather than PowerPoint. Kinda neat seeing the adaption they're doing on their own.
There was some initial complaining, but the users have adapted very well. It's been great for us. -

You don't need a lawyer for that. For example, see here. A student has to file a complaint properly, of course, but all the materials for that are available. I guess if you don't claim any monetary damage and only want the judge to tell the other party to listen to your concerns, the judge will just do that. The filing cost is negligible ($30) and any student can afford it. This would be a useful experience anyway, and it's definitely safer than breaking into the database vigilante-style.

Others have mentioned the California code that prohibits employers from extorting the product of your own personal time just to get a job. Delaware also has a similar law (bottom of page).
My experience is that the single best thing you can do is to actually get the contract source from HR. Insert the sections from the California/Delaware code and show it to the Man, along with the text of the law so they knows it's real, tried-n-true Legalese and safe (especially if you have to modify some wording to match the rest of the contract). And it'll be on non-marked-up paper, which employers also like.
Nobody is going to let you get away with just striking out the IP clause, like lots of posters have suggested, and most of the clauses are too complicated to tweak with a pen. Keep it the way it is, but add an "except as provided by section X" (which is the California/Deleware section). It may not be perfectly solid legally, but in the worst case it takes puts the burden of proof on them. They won't bother trying to steal your IP in court unless it's really valuable, and in that case you can hire a lawyer of your own and win. -

They should write a letter to the Delaware Attorny General (according to the SEC web page Dell is incorporated in Delaware) and the Better Business Bureau.
Let them know the customer service manager at Dell told you to lie and accept the conditions of a legal document that they refuse to send you. -

and Delaware will get you with some wacky toll booth rates anyways...

For the sake of clarity: although Delaware does not impose a sales tax, it does impose a gross receipts tax. In this system, businesses pay a tax based on total sales receipts for that fiscal year. Which amounts to a less visible sales tax. Businesses simply include the cost in pricing, passing that tax on to you in the process. Similar systems exist in other countries and seem to work well. The drawback is that it's harder to tell what the tax rate is for a given product. (you have to check the state guidelines instead of simply looking at the receipt)

Stop confusing "nonprofit" with "tax exempt"The page you linked to deals exclusively with the disclosure obligations of tax exempt organizations. Not all nonprofits are tax exempt.
Most nonprofit organizations file normal corporate tax returns and face no more disclosure rules than any other private organization. It is only those nonprofit organizations that have also filed for and have received tax exempt status from the IRS that face additional disclosure requirements.
Put bluntly, the IRS doesn't concern itself with whether or not a corporation is incorporated as a nonprofit organization. The IRS only cares that the corporation pays its federal taxes unless that corporation has applied for and received tax exempt status.
Given that there is no reason to believe that the KDE league has applied for (much less received) tax exempt status, there is no reason to believe that the KDE league faces additional disclosure requirements over any other non-public corporation.
You may also be interested in reading the Delaware Revised Code on the subject. See especially Title 8, Chapter 1.

Linux and Main confuses nonprofit with tax exemptThere is no meaningful distinction between nonprofit and not-for-profit. There is a large distinction between nonprofit (and not-for-profit) and tax exempt. Most tax exempt organizations have to make certain financial statements available to anyone who requests them at the cost of a reasonable fee for duplication.
To make things clearer, some nonprofit organizations are tax exempt (most Churches, most charitable organizations, some schools, etc.). Other nonprofit orgnizations are not usually tax exempt (political action committees, co-ops, neighborhood associations, etc.).
Being a nonprofit (for the most part) simply means that profits are not payed out to shareholders. This does not mean that the corporation cannot make a profit. Nor does this mean that the corporation is tax exempt. Tax exempt status usually means not only that the corporation doesn't have to pay taxes on its income, but that donations to the corporation are tax deductable. Because of the donation item, tax exempt organizations are generally held to a higher state of transparency than other nonprofits.
If the KDE League is not a tax exempt corporation (and not publically held), I do not believe that there is any law that states they must publically detail any financial statements. I could be wrong on that.
You can check out the Delaware Revised Code if you like. As the KDE League is incorporated in Delaware, this is the law that governs their incorporation.

Some things they might have missed...There's this bit:

and then there's this bit:The people shall be secure in their persons, houses, papers and possessions, from unreasonable searches and seizures; and no warrant to search any place, or to seize any person or thing, shall issue without describing them as particularly as may be; nor then, unless there be probable cause supported by oath or affirmation.
Now, if the Wilmington police have a warrant they can present for inspection for each and every one of the entries in this database.... well, that just means there's at least one judge that needs to be impeached. -

Deleware makes it fast, inexpensive, and exceedingly easy to incorporate, and because you don't have to be based in a state to incorporate a business in it, many people choose Delaware. Other popular states are Nevada, California, New York, and Florida -- but Deleware is the best.

Re:Good thing that DeCSS lost this battleThe U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York is as a practical matter one of the most important trial courts in the United States.
(Other contenders: Supreme Court of New York for the County of New York (the state trial court in Manhattan), Delaware Chancery Court (where many major corporate disputes are heard), U.S. District Court for the Central District of California (the federal court for Silly Valley).)
While the Southern District's decisions are technically precedent only for future cases within that District -- which includes Manhattan, the Bronx, Westchester County and a couple other counties -- its decisions are enormously influential. Judges in other federal and state courts take opinions from the Southern District very seriously.
