You won't see widespread fiber to the home in your lifetime. Running all new wiring, to every house, in every neighborhood, in every city, was never a good idea. Would I like gigabit fiber? Of course. Who wouldn't. But the U.S. is too big

Comes up every time someone discusses the sorry state of internet in the US. Size has nothing to do with it. We don't need to run fiber to every square mile of death valley. 3% of the united states land is urbanized. We don't need to cover even all of THAT. If you live in Lander WY, you accept you're not going to have great internet offerings. Farmer Brown in western kansas isn't going to start a rebellion if LA gets fiber and his cows don't. But how many cities aside from the three that Google Fiber did have sensible fiber?

The issue is exclusively oligopolies and their ability to lobby. Verizon proved as much with New York.

End restrictions on municipal broadband.

It's a start, but Comcast, Verizon, AT&T and the other big guys undoubtedly have other strategies to undermine those efforts. Suing to stop them for unfair competition is only the first defense. With Google fiber, they engaged in misinformation campaigns that didn't work, but they'll get better, and IIRC, google had to lobby KC to allow google to touch their phone lines without being shot on sight.

Break up the telecos, seize their copper, and send the executives to Rikers for massive fraud and anti-competitive behavior, and fiber will follow....

On the topic of Russians, I'm going to assume that this is Putin trying to help his employee Trump win. If Trump can't tweet, he can't keep reminding voters of all the reasons they want to vote against him. And the only way to keep Trump from tweeting is to take out Twitter.

It's mainly affecting the east coast, sure, but also Ohio which Trump needs to win.

Seems like a much more straightforward than using trolling to help him win.

People don't read the page, the scan the page. Do a test with a group of people and an eye tracker, and they will probably see this on average:
1. Windows 10 is recommended upgrade for this PC (“I'd rather not”)
2. Sunday, May 22, 11:00 PM (“Certainly not! Bugger off”)
3. OK (“No, it's not OK”)
4. Upgrade Now (“FU! Where's the other option ?????”)
5. X (“That's want I want: CANCEL the incestuous bastard”)

Complain rightfully that Microsoft is being aggressive, belligerent, and ought to stop, or even be sanctioned... but there's no reason to imagine nonsense about the X button, which is doing exactly what its always done: dismiss the window. Whether or not it cancels the action... some times it does, other times it doesn't...it depends. You can't assume it's cancelled and there are countless examples where dismissing a notification window doesn't cancel...

From what I see, it schedules the upgrade, and you have to opt out by going into some other settings to cancel.

It's not that the "X" activates the upgrade - at that point, it's too late.

Still, it's very shady not to give users an obvious choice on the popup, let alone not making it an "opt in" choice.

All of my machines are running Windows 10... shrugs... at this point, all the bitching is basically all about the point of the matter. Win 10 runs fine on the machines I've installed it on (several laptops, 9 or 10 desktops, some 10+ years old). Unless you have some particularly specific niche software or hardware (that can't run in Win7, therefore, not in Win10, since the drivers are mostly the same), people really shouldn't have too many complaints.

I'd be more concerned if Microsoft was pushing people to Win8 and the crappy fail that was the Metro Start Screen. Win10 dialed it back and makes more sense in the case of a desktop/mobile hybrid OS. Still, the exec who is pushing this sort of tactic needs to be fired ASAP.

True, apparently most users think this is the "we will NOW upgrade your PC" dialogue box and just close it to cancel the upgrade. But instead, this is the " We have SCHEDULED your upgrade, and here you can change some options about the schedule or start the upgrade right now" box. And closing the dialogue does nothing about the schedule.

People just seem to click away everything which is put in front of them. If they would actually READ the text, they would see that in the middle of the dialogue, it says "click HERE to change upgrade schedule or cancel scheduled upgrade": http://core0.staticworld.net/i...

But apparently reading text is too hard these days.

Disclaimer: I do not say Microsoft are right in the way they try to distribute this upgrade. But some accusations (like that they changed this dialogue to start the upgrade even though people "X it away") are just stupid. It's just a consequence of them making it a "recommended" update plus the update settings the user himself chose.

"Close laptop, go to bed. Get up in the morning, laptop has installed updates and rebooted, wants your permission to continue"

Windows 10 will always ask when you want to restart.

You can also go to Advanced Power Settings and disable scheduled timers if you don't want to wake up your laptop to install updates.

Yawn- so looking through the info, it doesn't really do much more than my Moto 360 can do, yet the Moto 360:

1) Has been available already for 7 months.

First doesn't mean best: just like with the original iPod.

2) Has inductive charging and the Apple watch doesn't.

This makes me question whether you're just a troll. In case you're being serious: The Apple Watch DOES in fact charge via inductive charging: https://www.apple.com/watch/te... (look down at "Charge it overnight. Wear it all day.")

3) Is far less expensive.

I don't know about "far" less. Quick glance shows it to be $100 to $150 cheaper than the entry level Apple Watch. That's a good difference... but it's not like the Moto 360 is $50 or something. For something you will probably replace every couple of years that difference isn't much amortized over the lifetime of the device.

4) Is arguably much better looking (for those who want round).

Firstly, I'm not sure why "round" is so desirable. Many high end watches are square/rectangular (for instance: http://www.hublot.com/en/colle... ) and all computing devices and even traditional writing devices (paper!) are rectangular for a reason: it's easy to display and read data that way.

Secondly: if we're going to be subjective I'll say that I don't want an enormous watch like the Moto 360 ( http://core0.staticworld.net/i... ). The Apple Watch fits far better: http://www.wired.com/wp-conten...

5) Works with many different phones, not just a few iPhone models.

I'll take perfect integration with a few phones over buggy connections with a bunch of phones...

So what is so innovative and impressive? A button on the side? The 360 has a button. It is not a scroll wheel, but despite what Apple's video claims, I have absolutely no problems using the touchscreen to pinch zoom, swipe, or scroll and it doesn't hurt my experience and is far more intuitive.

I suppose that it is easy to pinch to zoom on your enormous, tablet sized watch ;-). But for people who want a watch that doesn't look like they strapped a sundial to their arm they are going to need a smaller screen and a better mechanism for scrolling and zooming because of it.

The ONLY two things I saw of interest were variable touch sensitivity... which is certainly not a new technology, but it novel on a watch. And having a speaker, which I certainly have not missed. I mean, it looks like a great device, but I fail to understand why people think it is some brilliant new idea or super fantastic breakthrough.

Only Apple themselves think it's some "super fantastic breakthrough": but many of us see it as being a really solid offering that is going to enhance our daily activities.

If you own an iPhone then this should be pretty interesting to you. It's going to have great integration and tons of really useful features. Definitely enough features to justify its price.

Not everything has to be "revolutionary"... it can just be "really good" for the price its offered at... and people will buy it.

But instead, Microsoft set it automatically in their browsers, prompting most websites to ignore it, since it no longer meant anything.

No, Microsoft did not 'automatically' set it. Though that may depend on one's definition of 'automatic'.

If no - then there wasn't anything automatic about it. Enabling Do Not Track in IE was one of the settings explicitly listed in the Express Settings screen, and users could certainly choose the Customize option to disable it.

The W3C, after Yahoo's complaints, decided to clarify that it should be the user's choice.

Of course the next question then becomes whether opt-out still implies a user choice just as much as opt-in would be.
I.e. did the user actually read that line, did they actually understand what it meant, and did they consciously decide to continue with the Express Install with said understanding in mind? If yes, then the user made the choice.
If no, then it could be argued that Microsoft had made the choice for the user.

But even if that is the case - is that a bad thing? To draw a parallel - almost every browser now blocks pop-ups. By default. Without even asking the user if they want this behavior. Do you honestly think that if there were an X-Do-Not-Popup header, sites would honor this setting - and we would now not be subjected to pseudo-popups (content inserted into the DOM and drawn on the center of the browser client window)? And do you blame browser makes for making the choice for the users regardless?

Maybe Microsoft did deliberately sabotage it - but I welcome their sabotage as it merely accelerated the natural process.
