Astonishing
I didn't know all of those sheep were so interesting that they warranted expanded surveillance.

Re:Library analogy
Why would you suspect anything illegal was going on? I send links to my friends from government sites quite frequently, and they often have seemingly random letters/numbers in the links, which I originally accessed through the menu structure. For instance http://www.stats.govt.nz/browse_for_stats/population/estimates_and_projections/SubnationalPopulationProjections_MR2031.aspx This is information the government WANTS people to have access to. I don't see why the appearance of the URL has anything to do with whether it is private or not.

Slashdot often runs stories about New Zealand. There are only 4,270,605 people in all of New Zealand, both north and south islands.
However, there are 45 million sheep.

Only 5,499,000 Jews in Israel, 14 mil in the world
It would be good if Slashdot stories provided some perspective.
When stories about small countries are posted, it is useful to know the population. The entire country of Israel has a population like a big city. There are only 7,282,000 people in Israel. There are only 5,499,000 Jews in Israel. There are only about 14,000,000 Jews in the entire world.
Slashdot often runs stories about New Zealand. There are only 4,270,605 people in all of New Zealand, both north and south islands.
There are only 21,382,480 people in Australia. -
My source is the New Zealand government:
My source is the New Zealand government: In 1988 there were 64,600,000 (64.6 million) sheep.
It's somewhat unlikely that someone who demonstrated a strong interest in New Zealand, and some knowledge of the country and the culture would be completely wrong, off by a factor of 10. -
Re:I've been saying for yearsYour explanation is missing an important factor, as laid out (believe it or not) by Karl Marx:
Foreign Markets
You see, the US (as an example) economy is based on creating debt and injecting debt-based money into the domestic economy. In order to offset this, the US sells non-tangibles such as entertainment into foreign markets. The only problem with this method is that in order to offset the debt, new markets must continuously be exploited, and the prior markets must hold steady.
This is what makes the GNP so important and, right now, what makes pushing DMCA-like laws onto other nations through the WTO so important to the US. Once all possible markets are saturated, the current fiscal practices will no longer be viable, and will collapse, either through the countries practicing them going bankrupt (see New Zealand for an example that almost left it too late) or by those countries taking natural resources by force from others before the financial collapse begins.

Re:Lack of immigration != stagnant
How many of those can plausibly claim to have gotten there through immigration? Many of them have been powerhouses for hundreds of years.
I am not exactly sure how to answer your question. How many got where through immigration?
Many rich nations have substantial foreign-born populations, and some of them will want citizenship.
Immigrants tend to go where there are good jobs and high standards of living. -
Re:New Zealand gets 75% from geothermal
The reference is bollocks, there has been significant investment in hydro generation over the past 15 years. However reality is that around 45% of NZ electricity generation comes from non-renewable sources (oil, gas, coal). Geothermal is less than 10%. Commentary about NZ statistics from an Australian site would be about as relevant as USA statistics from a Russian site.... -
Re:You guys have it so cheap its not funny.Yes, with conversion, its about the same, but our average wage rates are roughly the same, dollar for dollar.
Average income, USA = approximatly $35,648.55 (2004)
Average weekly pay, New Zealand $586 * 52 weeks = $30472 (2005)
Now that I see it worked out, thats sorry reading. Thats a pitiful average income. I wonder about Australia.
Australian average weekly income $816.80 * 52 = $42432 (2006)
Oh! Thats a bit better! Maybe I should move to Australia rather than the US. I was thinking about working in the US for a little while, but Austalia doens't seem that bad and it isn't that far away.
Anyway, my point is that I (on average) earn less than someone in the US, dollar for dollar, but videogames are twice as expensive.

Re:It shouldn't start with the Summer of Code
Interesting theory, and probably true. Personally I have never figured out whether girls really liked dolls (pink, etc...) or whether it was just forced down their throats. Then again, I had a doll (teddy) and I pulled it apart to see how it worked.
Another pressure would be wanting to have children. By the age of 30, only 24.3%of woman are without a child. Seeing as a child is a full time job, thats 75.7% of the female workforce whos first priority is not working a ten hour day, or being on call at all. That was from the 1996 census, so I admit the data is a little old but you can see what I mean. Now the pressure is all for woman to have a career, a baby, and a life (somewhere?), which is quite frankly crazy. One woman I know is currently teaching full time, running a business and raising her son.....I have no idea how she does it, it's almost superhuman.
This kind of thinking is rife in New Zealand as well though. We try and coerce the sexes into other roles, cultures into other roles, and spend vast amounts on social engineering to improve statistics, all the while forgetting that these aggregates of numbers were individual people making decisions on how best they wanted to live their lives. The best we can and should do (IMHO) is to make sure people aren't descriminated against and then help them live their lives in the way they they want. -
Re:Corporate CrackBTW... funny how you cite a report and get mod points, and I cite a paragraph from the report to ask "what is the cohort component method" and get a troll.
Here is a hint: you didn't get modded down for citing that paragraph or asking that question...
For your information, you can read about the cohort component method here

Re:Once again, why needless use of Javascript is BThis little form uses Javascript so that the user doesn't have to re-load the page each time they click a control. Not only is it a better experience for the user (especially when the site is slow), but the server admins like it to...And people who pay for the bandwidth.
But you know what? Dissable Javascript then go back and try to use the form again*.
Just because most people are too lazy to write decent web apps, doesn't mean it's not possible, or that Javascript is evil.
* For those that can't be bothered dissabling Javascript; the page looks and acts pretty much the same, but with some reloading.

Actually they just counted them all and there are only 39.2 million now. And I'm sure there must be a joke in there somewhere too!

Re:Big deal
The first undersea cable connection between Australia and New Zealand was commissioned on February 21, 1876.
Is this a typo?
I don't think so - I believe it was a telegraph cable bound with tarred cloth. There is a brief mention of it here.
