I forget: can LibreOffice's database product run commercial off-the-shelf software written in VBA for Microsoft Access? I worked for a company that depended on something called Stone Edge.

That's sort of hard if your business depends on commercial off-the-shelf applications that run in Access+VBA, such as Stone Edge Order Manager.

there are free open source programs that do what turbotax does. Kmoney comes to mind.
KMyMoney can replace Quicken, but TurboTax comes with a translation of the latest United States tax code and the tax codes of the several states into executable code. It's unlikely that free software maintained by hobbyists can keep up with annual amendments to multiple jurisdictions' tax laws.

I wouldn't call [Linux's dearth of native games] failing to deliver by anyone other than the companies who made the games.
If most companies that make games fail to deliver, it is up to free software developers to deliver in their stead. No, NetHack and Dwarf Fortress aren't enough.

- Major label video games: Where's the Free alternative to Smash Bros., Spore, or any EA Sports title? And why does Mario Kart DS still kick the behind of TuxKart?
- Vertical market software: Where's the Free alternative to Stone Edge Order Manager?

Do you live in 1998 ? Linux has been doing everything you listed here since KDE 1.0 and StarOffice 5.0.
Does StarOffice or OpenOffice.org run applications delivered as an Access+VBA database, such as Stone Edge Order Manager? If not, what alternative to Stone Edge Order Manager do you recommend?

Mac has no Access
I really do not see the benefit of upgrading from XP to Vista for most business users - who, lets face it, are doing web, email, word and excel. Is there really anything they can;t do just now?
For one thing, as of July 2008, Windows Vista Business can "do[] web, email, word, and excel" on a newly purchased computer without having to find drivers and install the Windows XP Professional "downgrade".
What about Mac OS X - doesn't that provide much the same 'new' features?
Mac OS X has no Microsoft Access. No Access means no Stone Edge Order Manager. To what package do you recommend that small businesses that use Order Manager migrate?

DOS+Windows bundling; inflation; more featuresWindows 3.1 was $130 and commonly discounted to $80. That was for the whole OS, not split up so you have 4 different versions. The top price was $80. The cost was low because Microsoft had competition. drsmithy pointed out how you might have forgotten to take into account inflation, larger feature sets, and the bundling of MS-DOS into the Windows 95 and Windows 98 SKUs. But for MS Windows, the cost doubled or tripled. All because consumers refuse to use alternatives. Citation needed. Plenty of home users and graphic designers use Apple computers, which do not come with any version of Windows. Businesses, on the other hand, need to run vertical-market software that isn't tested on Wine. In the case of my employer, if I drop Microsoft software, I have to drop Stone Edge Order Manager, which runs on top of Access. Which package should an online retailer use instead of that one?

Use of the word "default" is deprecated. That said, can't a Group Policy change the initial file format that Microsoft Office 2007 applications suggest?

Linux in people's homesWhat zero clicks? Most people use pre-installed operating systems. Exactly. A lot of users on Slashdot want some OEM with a recognized brand name to make and promote home workstations that come with GNU/Linux operating systems. Dell Ubuntu systems are a good start. Almost every major server vendor will sell you server with Linux installed and supported. How much more mainstream do you want? Something like Windows Home Server: computing appliances for the home that wear the penguin on their sleeve. Open Office does its job perfectly well. But what is "its job"? Does OpenOffice.org run something comparable to Stone Edge Order Manager? As far as I can tell, one needs Microsoft Access for this VBA app.

Re:accdb?Although it is an 'independent' company, FileMaker blows Access out of the water and you can use it on windows. But can a $1000 proprietary application that runs within Access be ported to FileMaker? Being locked into a particular order tracking system brings along Microsoft Office Access lock-in, which due to bundle pricing brings along lock-in to the rest of Microsoft Office software, discouraging people from trying Apple or Sun products.

They needed databases, too...
Don't forget DB Master for the Apple II. Sold several million copies - a modernized version of it is still used in public works offices around the world, even 20 years later.
The original author still does DB work for this company. -

.mde, but they don't even use it - the source code is provided w/ the app (for $1,000).
