Whites have been enslaved and imported from Europe to North Africa and the Middle East for thousands of years. Back maybe 30-40 years ago, a farmer in Britain was plowing a field and accidently found a long chain of slave collars from the Roman era (when slaves were one of Britain's biggest exports). It's been going on a long time. In fact, a large portion of the early population of colonial America were white slaves: not just those euphemistically called "indentured servants" but people who were kidnapped, press ganged, sold, shipped out, and then often worked to death. Does this surprise me? Yes and no. Yes, because I often look to Canada as our more enlightened neighbor to the north who's solved so many of the problems that did or have plagued us for so long: universal health care, rampant racial strife, rigorous environmental protections, etc. At the same time, Canada as a nation has long had a strange relationship with its children.

Most countries put children and minors into the same legal category as imbeciles and the insane, but Canada is much more aggressive about it and in the process, their parents are often in practice lumped in as well. Have you ever been to a supermarket in Canada and tried to buy caffeinated Mountain Dew or caffeinated rootbeer? It doesn't exist, because children can't be trusted with caffeine and their parents might be too stupid to realize that non-cola sodas may contain caffeine.

Frankly, it astonished me at first, because Canada is more dedicated than most countries to conducting research into children's psychology: if we understand our children, then we can change the world! That sort of thing. But what's even more surprising is that a recent study ; demonstrated that in spite of how much effort and funding was being poured into Canadian schools and Canadian children's programs (from prenatal and on), immigrant children still on average outperform native-born Canadian children. And that's in spite of the fact that Canada's immigrant children are in greater poverty and penury than their native counterparts; the education they received in foreign countries prior to arriving in Canada has helped them succeed where Canadian children without that opportunity languish.

I'm torn as to how to how to find a solution, of course. On the one hand, parents are proving insufficient, but at the same time, the government is proving incompetent to solve the problem. Clearly something has to be done, but who? The only choice I see is the UN, but they're usually unwilling (or not allowed) to get involved in purely domestic affairs, and you don't get any more domestic than child-rearing. But whatever Canada does, it must act soon. Certain industries (particularly the film industries in British Columbia) have been on the rise and have successfully drawn an international presence formerly reserved to the US. But if Jonny or Sally can't read, then when the children grow up to staff or lead those industries, the nation will find itself in a lot of trouble.

I only wish we in the US had something to offer in aid, but we've failed our children too. I suppose that ultimately, we'll have to rethink the legal status of children and perhaps move them into a more autonomous position and role, where they can think for themselves and make decisions in their own best interests, since obviously we can no longer trust ourselves to act in anyone's best interest but our own. First it was propertied white men who were enfranchised, and then came men of other races, and then finally ;wo men. It's time for children to join in the society of nations and receive their full share of human rights including the right to vote, not just in silly online polls but in elections that matter. They have voices of their own, and it's time we started listening.

The young are also a bit more idealistic and impressionable. From what I've seen, they're more willing to accept a utopian ideology, despite its impracticalities or impossibilities, and even waste their time propagandizing about it, or trying to set it in motion. Particularly when there is so much disinformation being propagated by those with political agendas, be they left or right.

Ever watch a 14-yr-old trying to defend Marxist theory online? It'd be hilarious if it weren't sad due to the lack of situational awareness that demonstrates. Lack of experience can hamper judgement, apparently.

Take a few clueless chaps who have the ego and audacity to think that *they* have the one true path, give 'em readily-available information about, say, primitive explosives design, and they can do a fair bit of damage to themselves and those around them. Grandiousity and an exaggerated sense of self-importance can lead to silly, bloody plans -- regardless of source, be it ideology or simply a desire for fame.

Recall the Columbine chaps? Their plans were so ridiculous as to include hijacking a jumbo jet and crashing it into NYC -- from a couple of chaps who apparently couldn't properly detonate a propane-based explosive when other's lives (or taking of them) depended on it. Very Hollywood, that; a plan for fatally stupid imbeciles.

Critics of the 'net have a valid point in that there is much information dangerous in the hands of violent fools -- and that, therefore, parents should be careful to mind their children. Right now, many families have -- and, many would say, need -- two working parents. That more than slightly reduces the time available to spend with them, which makes it more difficult to know if an unruly teen has been contributing to Stormfront or its ilk lately. To absolve the medium completely, with fun documents like a short guide to explosives easily found (that doc revealed via Google), is a bit disingenuous.

I spit on what others call "national values". Giving any fuck about ones nationality in the age where people change their host countries few times in their lives is stupid and pointless.
Besides countries run by nationalist governments end up trailing economically and lose political influence and credibility (see: Russia, Slovakia). We are digressing here though. As far as free speech is concerned you can't simply assume that everything goes. That is not your right. Your right is to live your life in peace and relative safety from hatred and discrimination. By giving racists the right to free speech you are denying some minorities their basic right to safety and equal freedom. Put it this way: it's impossible to guarantee everyone a total freedom of speech. Some society members are plain dangerous and should be closely watched and restrained if necessary and possibly thrown in jail or executed where applicable. The word freedom does not imply anarchy! There is freedom and there is freedom. If you decide to give people who run stormfront freedom you are denying it someone who is on the receiving end of their hatred.

The Simon Weisenthal Center has a problem - their mission is finished. Their original purpose was to locate old Nazis from WWII and have them punished. But over time, the old Nazis died off or were too geriatric to get excited about. Like other charities that outlived their usefulness, they looked for a new mission. The mission they ended up with was the manufacture and sale of guilt. They now have a chain of Holocaust museums and various relatedproduct lines. It's become an industry, like the Vietnam POW/MIA thing. To keep the contributions flowing in, they have to keep trying to make Americans feel guilty. Part of this is inflating the neo-Nazi threat.

At least in the U.S., the neo-Nazi movement has always been a joke. Back in the '60s we had George Lincoln Rockwell and his American Nazi Party. That went nowhere. And none of its successors have advanced beyond the tiny-bunch-of-jerks level.

If you'd like to see a site the Weisenthal Center has tried to shut down, see Stormfront. This is a spinoff of the Klu Klux Klan, not a neo-Nazi site. The Klan's idea of White Power excludes Jews, so the ADL and the Weisenthal Center went after Stormfront, which increased Stormfront's visibility substantially. There's a mutually supportive relationship between the extremist groups at both ends of the spectrum - they need each other to have someone to hate. Nobody else cares much.

You obviously think I hate some people based not on what they have done, but on their race, sex, sexuality, or religion. I can understand why you'd think that. After all, I did praise Charlton Heston's speech to the Free Congress Foundation "in which he made inflammatory remarks regarding women, gays and lesbians, and African Americans; while at the same time trivializing the Holocaust." (according to this Violent Policy Center's article). In praising the speech, I am in very bad company (David Duke, Stormfront, etc.) so I should have expected their stink to rub off on me. However, if you think for a moment, you'll see that agreeing with someone on one point doesn't necessarily make you agree with them on another point unless the latter follows from the former. So the question is, does "I hate niggers" follow from "I like the Heston speech"?

No. It doesn't. Most people who are racist will probably like the speech, but being a racist isn't the only possible reason for liking the speech. Similarly, x=0 => sin(x)=0 but sin(x)=0 !=> x=0.

I think you meant www.stormfront.com, which is a game company, rather than www.stormfront.org, which is a "white pride" site. Since I would hope that my fellow Slashdotters aren't rascists, I'm going to assume that it was just a simple error.
