Special on Ultimate Play The Game, now Rare

Jonathon Miller writes "Nintendorks has posted a huge special about Rare, the software company that brought us Goldeneye for the Nintendo 64. The special outlines Rare's release list for '99, including their sequel to Goldeneye, the first person shooter Perfect Dark." For those of you who had an old 8-bitter (ZX Spectrum, BBC,etc) this is also a blast from the past: Rare used to be called Ultimate Play the Game, makers of Alien 8, Nightshade, etc... the only games I still play.

With 30 million users, a little bit of technical difficulty can go a long way.

Microsoft's a href="http://www.hotmail.com/">MSN Hotmail lost the use of a server this morning, shutting what the company termed a "small percentage" of users out of their accounts.

"We're working to fix it," said Hotmail product manager Laura Norman. "We're beginning to bring it back online right now and will have it fully restored in next couple of hours."

One Hotmail user reported hours-long delays in receiving email through her account, but Norman said the server outage did not affect mail delivery, only account access.

With 30 million registered users, Hotmail leads the pack of Web-based email providers. That extraordinary volume also means technical problems can wind up affecting hundreds of thousands, or even millions, of email exchanges.

Hotmail last month suffered mail delivery delays and also a glitch that flooded Internet service providers with multiple copies of email.

You do protest too much. True, Rare don't produce games that are extremely hackable like iD's, and they don't exactly do Linux ports, either. However, Rare are wizards at what they do do, and they have been for a very long time, especially when you include their predecessor, Ultimate. Their status in the old Spectrum world would be enough on its own to justify this appearing on Slashdot. Rare is not just another console games designer, and this is not just a random piece of N64 news.
