There's Infantry from Sony Online Entertainment. It's a free gateway game. Old school, top down, 2D arena game. Still has an okay population. The game's been around for about 10 years now.

There's also Subspace (originally created by the same guys that made Infantry), which is now abandonware and taken over by some elitists who created their own client (and don't share the source, but is the main client used nonetheless) called Continuum. Continuum is top down, 2D arena game kind of like asteroids, but against other ships and a whole lot more fun. Still has a very healthy population. Been around for about 12 years now.

And then there's Discretion, which is an open source version of the client. It got a lot of flak and crap from the guys who made Continuum, but it has survived and is maturing nicely. Also, since this client is OSS, it has huge potential to add in a ton of nifty features and such that the Continuum client will never have: OpenGL explosions, NEW weapons, etc.

This is sort of what happened with my favorite game: Continuum / Subspace.
Subspace was one of the first massive multiplayer games for the internet... I played it first in 1995 with a 24k modem... and I continue playing it year after year, still my favorite game.

Virgen Interactive released the game after it gave up on selling it (I guess it was too much ahead of times). The most popular client for it is Continuum.

Totally offtopic, but just incase you are interested in playing subspace again, it has been recreated under the name continuum and is freely available (not OS however) at http://www.subspacedownloads.com/

I'm still playing a really great 2d space shoot'em up called Subspace / Continuum made by Virgin Interactive Entertainment in the mid 95's.

VIE then dropped the game just after going retail.

It has really strong community supporting the game.

Now a new version of the game called Continuum has been reprogrammed from scratch to emulate the orginal version with added features.

It's an old networked game, but has the most teamwork oriented play I've seen. It's also less likely to irritate the "doom causes violence" crowd.
