Re:Good?
4chan is fundamentally Chaotic. Being consistently evil is far too... consistent for them.
So from time to time they pull out a stunt like making an awesome birthsday party for a WWII veteran. -

Re:Open source VoIP alternatives?
If I remember correctly there is at least two solutions to that.
ZRTP are one.

Re:USB 3.0 desperately needed here...
It is already free/open source, under the Lucent Public License (assuming you can bring yourself to run non-GPL code, I know it's hard for some people here). Plan 9 Port will allow you to run Venti on Linux, but ideally you just download Plan 9 and install it on your file server; you can then use v9fs to access Plan 9's fileservers.
I do my work natively under Plan 9, so I don't have much experience using Venti and Linux. -
3xDVD?
Interesting, is this new device a 3xDVD recorder?

Re:The basic difference
MythTV requires a little tinkering to get running, but is very flexible. I think this is really what it comes down to with most Windows VS. FOSS situations
</quote>
True, but if you use a canned distro designed to run on dedicated PVR boxen, such as Knoppmyth or Mythdora, you can get mythtv to "just work off the bat" too (at least with most standard configs). I installed Knoppmyth version R5E50 from scratch a couple of weeks ago in my hauppauge pvr-350 + pvr 150 dual tuner box with the silver remote for the pvr-350's ir receiver and the whole shabang was up-and-running in about an hour, no worries. Plus, I could then spend the rest of the day tweaking it to my needs (the Knoppmyth maintainer has already added some extra functionality, including a fully installed democracy player etc.) -
Re:TiVo wins of course...
What you should have replied with was pointing at the KPR Dragon 2.0, because that's basically a certified Tier 1 "It Just Works" system.
The problem I personally have is that it's HDTV only... I need a system like KPR Dragon that's for SDTV. They say one's in the works, but not very soon.
I would have thought the community would be working its ass off to find the cheapest possible off-the-shelf system that you could drop two Hauppauge 150s into, and boom, you're flying.
Like, for instance, does Slashdot think this is a good off-the-shelf system for MythTV?
Dell E521n with Athlon 64 3200+? $481 USD, before I add the two Hauppauge 150s, and plug in a 500GB USB drive...?
According to this guy, it's not 100% effortless... But it sounds like it can be made to work.
PLEASE, Slashdot, impress me by pointing me at the cheapest-possible off-the-shelf that will Just Work! -
Re:Plan 9 has some answers, even for Linux boxes
You could also use a 9p enabled Linux kernel like Ubuntu and import the remote file system into your local file tree using v9fs

Re:Microsoft Brand FUD
Microsoft who has stolen a lot of IP technology over the years, now want to protect its stolen IP technology from other potential challengers. Look at this,http://news.zdnet.com/2100-9588_22-5885657.h
t ml,MS lost but that does not stop MS. Some would argue that the guy who won had a patent, but he is one of many patent holders that MS stoled from. The only different is this patent holder actually won the case.
Anyway how can linux infringe on MS if microsoft uses BSD license code:
http://swik.net/License:BSD
It would actually be MS infringing on BSD/Linux. -
two other sites already
I think some folks are already doing this, and not just Freshmeat either as some of the previous postings have said. (1) See Alex Boxworth's Swik, which is a wiki about Open Source software projects. (2) Also see Business Readiness Rating which is a framework for evaluating open source software.

Re:reasons I like kmail
I mostly use KMail at home for the same reasons. Though i use fetchmail to retrieve the mails and procmail to pipe them thru ClamAV and SpamAssassin and finally sort them with some scripts of my own.
The fact Kmail use mail dir format, as mutt, let me also check my mail from a remote ssh session.
Some people might want to have a look to AMaVIS or check SWiK about
- emails
- fetchmail
- procmail
- ClamAV
- SpamAssassin
- KMail (nothing really here)
