another place that takes them in
http://www.systemrecycler.com/
Disabled guy takes old equipment, cleans and refurbishs it, repairs it if needed, loads Linux and gives it away to the needy.
Some of it is resold to cover basic costs but it's pretty much a non-profit. -
Flashback. 1986 all over again?
What's new about this?
Back about 1985 or 86 I bought a NVRam card for my AT.
I *think* it was called a "BatRam" or "BatDisk" or something like that.
I also had one before that for my 8bit XT machine.
I no longer have the 8bit card but I dug up the 16bit AT card out
of my garage just now, it took me about 30 seconds to find it.
Here's what it looks like, (please be gentle on my bandwidth!)

At the time, this was revolutionary stuff. You could power down and
all your stuff was right where it was before. I think these things were
only about 2 or 4 megabytes (which was HUGE back then).
IIRC, I was using mine as a ram disk. I could put LOTS of programs
on 4 megs. This being in the day when most programs were still being written
to run on 64k IBM PC's. -

Just so you appreciate what you are doing,
Here's a REAL PBX that is my personal property.
It's a Rolm CBX II 9000 that is configured to handle 10,000 lines. (Yes, it's operational) It was purchased for $3,000,000 when it was brand new. It's had additional upgrades installed, it's net value was over $5,000,000 at one point in the very recent past.
It fills an entire building. So, compare that with this new tech and you'll all the more appreciate what you have in front of you...

Re:70watt telephones?
True, 70wats is a lot for a phone, but it's not as bad as my BIG phone..

Man, you have electronic history in you hands
Some of us appreciate the "good old days"
I just restored an antique oscope, fully tube type, no IC's at all, not one.
My dad was a TV/Radio repairman in the 50's and 60's and his tools were my toys when I was little.
I remember going with him to Rat Shack to buy tubes. I also remember his angst when Rat Shack quit selling tubes.
About two weeks ago I went to Rat Shack to buy some IC's and other small parts to repair something. The moron punk had no clue what I was talking about. I could have been speaking Martian to him for all it was worth. After much complaining I got him to dig in the back for the parts. He brought out a 1 cubic foot cardboard box, it contained the last remnants of MY era of experimenting. A small handfull of basic IC's, a few perfboards, some IC sockets.
Thou shalt not repair thy electronics for it is an abomination in the eyes of the Holy Stockholders. Thou shalt throw away all that is broken and replace it with new, more costly and less repairable products.
Remember thy bottom line and hold it Holy...
Amen...

When hell freezes over....
My car is 30 years old.
It's a 1975 450SEL and I'll drive it for another 30 years.
All these new cars are SH*T.
I wouldn't take a new car if it were a free gift nor would I take a new car if you paid me to take it.
Plastic crap made in China assembled in Mexico.
Stick that crap up your tailpipe..
I bought a second one just like it so to be sure to have spare parts.
There is no way in hell that I will ever allow any sort of modern crap to be installed in my car, it's factory original and it's going to stay that way. I have no need or desire for modern electronics of any sort in my car, including stereo gear. I listen to AM radio anyway, and only sometimes. Most of the time I listen to the motor and the tires singing...
WTF does everyone want all this automatic crap for? This world has gone insane. I'm 44 years old and I was born on another planet. Somewhere between the time I was born and now, someone stole me away from the planet I was born on and dropped me off on this screwed up world. Nothing in this world resembles the world I was born into..

Re:Picture and a bit more
Oh and btw, here's an oldie I've been hanging onto for some years now. I don't really know the age of this thing, I bought it at a flea market about 15 years ago and it's in magnificent condition..

Want to see a REAL PBX??
Well, actually IBM preferred to call it a CBX but it's still a PBX none the less...
I personally own this beasty, a 12 node ROLM, capable of handling 10,000 phone lines. Anyone tired of small town phone company hassles? Start your own phone company...

I recycle more than they do..
I take old stuff from corporations and individuals and refurbish it and resell it cheap to the needy or young upstart SOHO's....
I take in more stuff than they do and I am,
1. disabled
2. working alone
Come on guys, you can do better than that.
My typical daily run (pick up)is 20 laserjets, 4-5 21" CRT's, +/- a dozen PC's, 6-10 injets, and 2-300 lbs of cables and wall-warts.
If I can do it this much by myself and disabled at that, they can do better. And I DO NOT throw ANY of it away, it ALL goes back to someone. A lot of it I simply refurbish and give away or trade away just to keep it from piling up.

Not me. I use OLD stuff over again.
I refurbish and recycle.

Re:Time to start stockpiling hardware...
I am stockpiling older hardware.
I have enough stuff to build my own clusters, to do what ever I want. I'll never run out of old computers.
I've implemented my battle plan to deal with future E.V.I.L.(tm) schemes to kontrol the people.
Tin foil hat and black helicopter optional..... -

Yes, this is a problem
And if you think that's bad, think of all these PC's going into the landfills in a few years.
We need to recycle systems more.
I'm a disabled American and took it upon myself to do something about it.
