    Here's how I solve the problem: replace Graffiti with TealScript. Unfortunately, it's ridiculously expensive for a Palm app, but I love it because I can actually use my own writing, which is actually very minimalist and original-graffiti like anyway -- but different enough that it was driving me crazy. And slowly, Graffiti was destroying my own handwriting. TealScript let me get it back. It's shareware, so you can try it out first (indefinitely, if you're into that).

    If they're smart, they'd piss off that small group of people who like Grafitti 2 and go back to G1. I always hear the same thing: G2 is easier to learn for people who've never used a PDA, but G1 only takes a little longer and is much faster and more accurate for the rest of the life of your device.

    I will not buy another G2 Palm. Right now, there are viable options (such as TealScript) to give owners of newer units G1 capability, but as with any closed source application and OS combination, it will only continue to work for as long as it's updated to work with new systems. As soon a TealPoint gets tired of supporting it, the product dies, and I lose the possibility of updating to newer hardware and actually being able to use it.

    I've tried and tried to get used to G2, but I just can't. If Palm re-adopts G1, I will continue to buy their devices. If they don't, I'll go back to using a DayRunner (which accepts any handwriting style and has a place to put my checkbook).

    I've been using linux for approximately 3 years now, and I still can't find a reason why I want linux on my pda past the "cool" factor which really translates to "geek" factor in this case. I have a palm m505 which I can do just about anything on, including playing short video clips (Impressive considering how much slower these processors are compared to that of the PocketPC PDAs. Of course, those of us in the "know" can't wait for the next Palm to come out its going to totally rock the scale for multimedia ;) Linux is good for servers folks, it makes an Ok desktop, and I can't see how it would be all that useful on a PDA!

    First of, let me state that I have no problems with Xerox being paid for their invention. However, considering the increasing competition from Microsoft, and the current faltering of Palm, this could potentially be devestating to the PalmOS world. Palm/3Com (don't know how that's going to be split!) are going to have to pay years and years of damages on top of licensing the patent.

    Palm could certainly change PalmOS to use a different character recognition technology - for example TealScript already does this (although it too appears to be infringing on Xerox's patent).

    Graffiti seems well integrated into PalmOS though, and to really fully replace it I'm sure would take more than writing a plugin.

    The Palm OS 4.0 page says that your Palm can now lock automatically when you turn it off. It just amazes me that it took them this long to implement just one of the many great features of TealLock. I've been using TealLock for the last two and a half years and it has had that feature the whole time. Additionally, it can simply hide your "hidden" files automatically when you turn off your Palm - do you really need to lock your Palm each time you turn it off?

    Also, TealLock lets you simply use a shortcut to hide and show records while in any application (and the same applies to locking/unlocking), so you don't have to go into Palm Prefs, goto Security, choose "Show Records," and then return to the app you were in.

    It seems to me that Palm still has a ways to go before they implement this. I had been hoping that they would put this in OS 3.5, but instead they put a little "visible hidden field" feature in. With TealLock activated, a friend of mine tried this feature on his Palm IIIx, and it screwed things up to the point that he had to wipe the Palm and HotSync the data back in. Palm should license the TealLock software, as it is clearly superior to any security software they produce.

    I guess the next Palm artist revolutionary will use TealPaint with a color Visor Prism or Palm IIIc. What would be cool is if you could make large color images on your Palm-compatible (you can view them with FireViewer already). I wish they had a better picture of the squigglies.

    These are in no particular order, and many are repeats from earlier in the discussion. I went through much of Palmgear when I first got my Visor Deluxe and thought the enclosed list of companies made some pretty cool products.

    I'm a big fan of TealPoint Software's TealScript, which lets you design your own graffiti -- you can make whatever letters be whatever you want, including alternate strokes and distortions. Really nice.
