Re:The Giant is awakenedI think AMD will do OK. Once Dell and the like get used to using CPUs from multiple sources they will probably survive. And a small company like AMD probably has an edge in terms of shorter design cycles and the ability to pick niches. AMD64 was a brilliant hack in retrospect that gave people most of the features of Itanium they wanted (64 bit, more registers) and none that they didn't (and expensive single source CPU with crap integer performance). Meanwhile Intel got hopeless bogged down trying to sell people Itaniums that they didn't want.
AMD and they have other clever stuff in the pipeline. E.g.
http://www.tech.co.uk/computing/upgrades-and-peripherals/motherboards-and-processors/news/amd-plots-16-core-super-cpu-for-2009?articleid=1754617439 What's more, with that longer instruction pipeline in mind, it will be interesting to see how Bulldozer pulls off improved single-threaded performance. Rumours are currently circulating that Bulldozer may be capable of thread-fusing or using multiple cores to compute a single thread. Thread fusing is one of the holy grails of PC processing. If Bulldozer is indeed capable of such a feat, the future could be very bright indeed for AMD. -
Re:Why did they buy ATI?
O RLY?
Internet memes aside, Nehalem has been confirmed to have GPU cores glued together in the same package as the CPU. That means you could have a Nehalem chip with an Intel X4500 (or even the memory controller) in one package. Considering Intel is currently the largest producer of graphics processors and seems to be more capable of developing and launching such technologies than relatively-small AMD, I would not be surprised in the least if Intel's technology beats out AMDs Fusion technology to the market. -
Re:Adam Smith sez...
there was a study done recently which showed that the difference in attention payed to traffic between drivers that were using hands-free phones and hand-held phones negligible. In other words it really doesn't make that much difference whether you're using hands-free or not (except for the law off course)

Re:ultra-fast!? is this a joke?
Ah, that's nothing. This 75 year old retired lady in Sweden has a 40Gbps connection. However it is experimental, and her son is Peter Löthberg, apparently one of the pioneers of the Internet in Sweden. Still, lots of people in Sweden and S Korea can get 100Mbps broadband.

Re:Not sure what he means.
Wow, didn't really think this was even in question, I thought everybody new this.

First link that came up in google for "toshiba paramount deal"
This is just the cost of doing business. -
Oh reeeeeeeally...
Let me paraphrase the article slashdot is citing its source from... "According to a Japanese article, Wii sales are falling, and no one is playing their Wii at home anymore. No one wants to make Wii games anymore, and developers will shy away from it like they did the GameCube. Will the PS3 rise like Jesus at Easter?! According to this other article (which we happened to write), this new model of PS3 will outsell Wii and XB360 this Christmas! That's enough evidence for us that Nintendo is going down again!" The article and the one it links to both read like Sony fanboy ravings, just like a lot of the posts in this thread sound like Nintendo fanboy defenses. So maybe Wii sales are down because Nintendo is doing what Nintendo does best: delaying major game releases to until right before Christmas (or, in this case, February, but let's not get off topic).
And by the way, my Wii has been gathering a little dust lately, but only because I picked up Zelda: Phantom Hourglass and imported the bilingual Phoenix Wright 3... I can't wait until their download service includes full games I can download to my poor worn out DS... -
did anyone notice...
that everyone on THIS PAGE is wearing goggles... what good is mid air 3D animation if you can't even look at it without eye protection?
Also I would like to add everytime something cool comes out like this the article is all good until the bottom where they have to go and say it's good for street signs and advertising
See also: "This enables the display to be curved around objects like street furniture - handy for advertising and other promotional purposes."
-From the article about the LG Oil/water display -
crap...
good as a toy if you're rich and wanna be like... "LOOK WHAT I GOT!!!"
however they say they wanna use it for marketing purposes such as wrapping it around street furniture...
HOWEVER it also says in this part that it needs to be viewed from 180 (straight on)... which would make it invisible to passing vehicles almost always and i'd imagine since it's "not as bright as a standard LCD" that the sun light will just wash it out anways...
cool tech honestly.. but mostly useless I say

Re:Just some more...
> Vista is actually selling quite well
No, Vista is being pre-installed on new computers.
Vista is not selling well, people do not want it, and
companies are being told to stay away from it*
> and many people I know are using it without any complaints.
Many people I know are switching to Ubuntu. See how that statement works?
> Why are the good points about Vista never mentioned on Slashdot?
Um because most of the people that come here just see history repeating
itself.

Speculation vs Fact
The Times Online is reporting that O2 have already won the contract ("O2 has beaten its rivals to win the exclusive UK rights to offer Apple's iPhone"), BBC News is saying that it is "reported to have won the sought-after deal". So the BBC is speculating whereas The Times is claiming it to be fact. I don't know who to believe.
If you believe all the articles you read then apparently O2 have denying winning the contract, being quoted as saying "they're just stories without any truth to them". That sounds like a pretty negative statement for a company who is apprently just being hush-hush about being in such a privileged position.
O2 do not have very good 3G coverage in the UK, it seems almost a no-brainer that Vodafone would've won the contract since their infrastructure is superior. There's no EDGE in the UK, so the UK iPhone either has to be 3G, or work over GPRS... the latter doesn't bear thinking about (think Youtube vids downloaded at 3-4KBps).
The smart money is still on Vodafone to win the contract in my opinion, despite these reports, and the UK (maybe Euro) iPhone having 3G support.
