Re:With great freedom comes great resposibility
"The problem is that the Iphone is the only phone where "jailbreaking" is necessary to get basic functionality working"
Correct. Something as simple as deleting a call is not possible on the iPhone without jailbreaking, which is shocking because on every cellphone I've used in the past 10 yrs I've had the ability to delete a phone call from the call log and it's a feature iPhone owners have been asking for since 2007. If you want to remove a single call you have to delete the entire phone call log
Honestly I don't know how anyone can use their iPhone without jailbreaking it, unless they're not really using it as a smartphone so they're not installing applications, using data, etc. -

The New iTunes 9 by apple
iTunes is a popular music service by apple. Now I had read that the latest version of iTunes 9 is released recently. iTunes 9, which offers several new features, such as "iTunes LP '. The album format is categorize under the songs with lyrics, info, lyrics, of course, a booklet or the respective artist interviews accumulates. The trick: The bands or the labels themselves are able to deposit such additional content on iTunes for download. Apple launches the latest version of iTunes called iTunes 9 to the public on October 10. Supported OS are Windows XP / Vista and, Mac OS X 10.4.10 or later. The iTunes Store is limited to a specific album to be sold, as well as music files, song lyrics and artwork, liner notes, interviews, photos, album credits and provides more visual data than ever before. Apple is "looking forward to coming back flip through the vinyl. Read more here. http://www.techarena.in/review/11417-itunes-9-intereactive-music-service-apple.htm

Re:Begging the question.
Ugh. A relatively new VM solution for the enterprise? No thanks. I'll stick with the "boring" tried and true methods not because they aren't interesting but because my employers know they can depend on me to use whatever works -- and that's why they pay me well. I would be jeopardizing my reputation by using something such as this without incredibly detailed testing.
It's good to be conservative in one's software choice (though many people on
/. somehow forget it when discussing Windows -> Linux migrations). Personally, if I had VMware rolled out, and it worked for me, I wouldn't see any reason for a change; and I can't really think of any particular features of Hyper-V that would be convincing. But I'm no expert in either, so I'd rather not judge the people who made the decision here.Besides, Xen and VMWare work so well why would I lock myself into any solution which requires Windows for the host OS?
Why not, if they're already running Windows servers throughout?
I don't want my host OS big and fat, needing a virus scanner etc. I want the tiny footprint of the other options.
I've yet to see a Windows server needing a virus scanner. It's kinda needed on your typical desktop Windows machine, and even then only because average users are clueless and prone to opening "Hot Naked Girls.jpg.exe" attachments and the like. If you run Windows with the same suspicious state of mind that's prevalent on Unix, you don't need it. And you definitely don't need it on a server (except for specialized solutions to scan incoming user mail on a mail server - but you'd want that regardless of server OS, so long as client machines are Windows).
You don't need a "big and fat OS" for Hyper-V either - you use Hyper-V Server, which is strictly a virtualization platform with minimal CLI-based UI for configuration, and no general Win32 compatibility. I won't claim that it's "tinier" than, say, VMware hypervisor, because I simply don't have the numbers - but then again, do you?

Re:Why dont I need word?
> Sounds like FUD.
Right. Because there's never been a person who has lost a file when Word crashed and the *.tmp files are entirely reliable and very easy to search through. In fact, it's so reliable, there was never any need to build recover functionality into it. Come on - just because you've lucked out and it's worked " seamlessly and effortlessly" for you doesn't mean a ton of us haven't lost important files because of Word's lack of 100% "uptime." -
Re:Microsoft Begs Win 7 Testers To Clean Install
"An independent thinker cannot back MS?"
Someone who currently backs MS 100% of the time regardless of the issue is not an independent thinker. Simple really. Stop pretending you're independent.
"If you claim that Word and Excel did not run as standard users, you are now exposing yourself as a liar."
Oh right! If it didn't happen to you then it didn't happen. You won't want to read this link:
Office 2007 Unusable in Limited User Account
I had this problem, but it was better than the crash that I use to get, which only happened as a limited user. So, you don't know what you're talking about. It's a fact that you don't want to be a standard user on Windows XP. Do you like getting updates to those required anti-virus programs? Then you may want to be an administrator.
Prediction: You will now go on to deny that Windows XP and every prior version had a problem with this, or you'll say that it doesn't matter now that everything has been fixed in Vista. It's enough to make anyone wonder why Windows 7 is coming so soon, when Vista was so perfect.

Re:eye candy
Really? No problems with those particular tasks? video problems due to Vista's design are well-known, as well as numerous other performance problems such as file copying while listening to music.
And what is RA3? Red Alert 3? If you're wanting to run a program designed for WINDOWS you need Wine installed first. Linux isn't Windows, which is apparently very hard for lots of people (like you) to understand. After that, you just pop the disc in, and install. You might consider playing a better programmed game, though... even under Windows, the entire C&C series network code and performance sucks balls. -

Re:Vista Annoyances- it is like they read my mind
Check the event log for event 1035 if you have the Dell Support Center still installed (and then uninstall it):
http://forums.techarena.in/showthread.php?t=865918
"Every time I reboot, Vista will log an event 1035 for every single app
installed on the PC. So, there are a few dozen entries like this every
time I log in:
Windows Installer reconfigured the product. Product Name: DellSupport.
Product Version: 6.0.3075. Product Language: 1033. Reconfiguration
success or error status: 0."
"Ditto! I uninstalled Dell Support Centre and the problem has gone away." -
Re:Blocked program at start-up
Hiya Mr AC. If you read Microsofts KB Article on the issue, you'll see they have three solutions: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/930367
Method 1: Run the blocked program or the blocked service
Fixes the issue once - will need to be clicked on each boot.
Method 2: Disable the blocked program or the blocked service
But I want to run it... so useless.
Method 3: Remove the blocked program or the blocked service from the startup process
See above. I want to run it.
To quote an MVP from http://forums.techarena.in/showthread.php?t=719268&page=2 :
How one allows blocked startup programs that ask for admin privileges when the system starts is done the same way, but those programs might not have a checkbox like the System Configuration Utility. It can't be disabled on an individual program basis. It's triggered because the program is asking to run with admin privileges.
(Emphasis mine)
So even adding it to the Windows Defender list wouldn't appear to help, as it would be a UAC issue. However, assuming your solution did help, let's reflect. Many people (myself included) want an "Remember this choice" tickbox to appear in the contect menu of the tray icon. That's two clicks.
To add a program to the ignore list, you must: Start Menu > Control Panel > Change startup programs > Tools > Options (Ignoring Allowed Items, as it only lists allowed, and doesn't allow adding new ones) > Add to "Do not scan these files or locations" via file dialog.
Not really the ease of use people are looking for. -
Re:Very true....
Like the other reply says, they're probably going to get bitten by WGA at some point with this approach, unless you keep applying the latest WGA cracks. A better solution is to use one of the "Chinese" VLKs that were leaked a couple of years ago but MS have so far refused to block because they're so widely used in China. For example this one definitely still works, I used it recently with ETH0's June XP Pro release. Amusingly it authenticates as completely genuine, allowing the installation of IE7 and everything.
In the same vein, MS never pushed the WGA notification update to simplified chinese language XP, and Chinese Vista Business users are currently using an unauthorised KMS to activate for free, which anyone else can use too ...
