Re:So what?
Maybe we should break out the guillotines. Why? It sure as hell seemed to work for the French. Wages for laborers, artisans, and tradespeople went up dramatically after they scared the living shit out of the rich folks. Start with the billionaires and see if the millionaires feel like un-assing a bit more wages. I bet it wouldn't take many heads in a basket to convince them wages need to rise and the H1B assholes need to go home.

Re:Symptomatic of UK iT
And then there are the Universities advertising Java and Flash courses as "Computer Games Programming". It took me some digging to find a uni that actually taught C/C++ and 3D games programming.
Surprisingly it was in Middlesbrough. The University of Teesside. They taught me C, C++, Direct-X (3D, Input and Play), OpenGL, Linux programming, Windows programming, AI, procedural texture generation, vector/matrix/quaternion/boolean maths,
...See here if you're interested:

They've also added "Computer Games Science" and "Games Graphics Programming" courses since I was there a few years ago, as well as having "Games Art" and "Games Design" courses. You might notice that the entry requirements don't require A-Level or even GCSE IT, which is good as those courses are generally "how to use MS office" as you said.

Machinema that writes itself!
Check out interactive story telling [wheelie.tees.ac.uk] for machinema that plays itself out according to goals and rules instead of a strict plot - its at an early stage but [shameless plug] having just done my dissertation on parts of it I reckon its an up and coming area!

Re:Engrish Resson
India follows the rules for English as it is practiced in the UK. "Labour" is a perfectly valid word, IIRC.

Well, it's not as if you care, but..
- Your teachers aren't as smart nor as important as you think they are. Show a bit more contempt, you damn teachers pet.
- Your suspicions about all that Christianity stuff that's been forced down your throat by school since you were 7 are about right. Next time your teachers turn an assembly into church, walking out is the right thing to do.
- No, it's not just you; most of the kids around you do suck. Stop beating yourself up about not fitting in and go read some more.
- Pay more attention to that girl in Astronomy class!
- Avoid Teesside Uni like the plague. Anyone who says they have a good CS department are damn liers!

Re:Degree
where did you study, mickey mouse university ?
University of Teesside
I did try to go for the higher end stuff, but choice was limited, and at least one interesting looking module was canceled entirely due to lack of, um, interest.
I blame the students too; most had absolutely zero clue, and the course catered to their needs. Sigh. -
Re:The Correct Answer
> * Introduction to basic programming theory using Java
We did a bit of Java - a whole 6 months dedicated effectively to making a Counter class with increment() and reset() methods, and c&ping a GUI onto it.
Did I mention this was all squeezed into 6pm-8pm because they didn't have enough staff to have it at a sane time?
Or shall I mention that the entire year long C module was mostly based on presentational work; 25% "designing", implimenting and "testing" a trivial program (Read in some data from a file, make averages/find maxima/find minima, print results.), and telling the class about it, and 25% on giving marks out of 10 for other people's presentations. Is it any wonder most of the students could barely tell you what a variable was by the time they hit the fourth semester?
It wasn't all entirely crap, of course; the RDBMS module was ok, for instance, but since 90% of the course was about as useful as banging your head against a brick wall (and conciderably less fun).. ugh.. I don't even want to think about it.
And if you're not already convinced - quote from one of the students at the end of the first year; "I want a job doing Visual Basic!". Aaagh :)
> What POS uni did you go to?
University of Teesside.
> Remind me not to hire anyone from there. No offense.
Make an exception for me! Help me pay for my antidepressants and rehabilitation into normalish society!
