Please MOD DOWN my previous postHooray, score one for the good guys. I am so damn happy that I was wrong about the Veeck case.
I spent HOURS googling about Veeck a couple weeks ago, and somehow picked bad keywords every time. All of the search results referred to the original case, the three-judge appeal, and/or the certiorari, but never the full court ruling. Damn page rot.
Thank you for the correction. It's a fucking wonderful ray of sunshine. -
Re:The actual case.Might want to check here for the results... As it ends Once it becomes law it is public domain.

Re:Laws are copyrighted.According to this site The Federal Fifth Circuit of Appeals overturned the idea that laws could be copyrighted, and stated that laws are public information.
to quote:
"The citizens are the authors of the law, and therefore its owners, regardless of who actually drafts the provisions, because the law derives its authority from the consent of the public, expressed through the democratic process." State of Georgia v. Harrison Co., 548 F. Supp. 110, 114 (N.D. Ga. 1982)

Re:Notice that law isn't exempt
The law is exempt, at least in the 5th circuit court, and for this particular case. The 5th circuit court reheard the case and has reversed it's decision. This was appealed to the supreme court and the supreme court refused to hear the case. You can find out more here Mike

Re:This is Bad, but ...
Offtopic, but you reminded me of Veeck vs SBCCI. Want to stay within the letter of the law? Make sure the law isn't copyrighted by a corporation first.

Re: Veeck v. SBCCI
The Fifth Circuit recently overruled that panel opinion, holding that people could not be barred by copyright from reading or copying "the law". See here for more.
