Re:Definition of Universe.
If you can observe something, it is part of the universe.
I think of it as: anyplace that a photon could travel to in the normal way that photons travel would be part of our universe.
People have posited the existence of other universes. It would require some unknown method of travel to go from one universe to another. The collection of all universes can be called the Multiverse.
I recently saw, in a comic, the idea that there could then be multiple Multiverses. That doesn't make sense to me any more than the idea of multiple Internets.
I read a web comic called Unicorn Jelly that really gave me some food for thought. How could you visit another universe where the physical laws are different? Only two ways: either you would have to travel in a little bubble where your usual physical laws apply somehow, or else you would have to be translated into the new universe. The Universe of Unicorn Jelly isn't made out of atoms, it's made out of "tratoms", and in order to visit you would have to have your body translated into tratoms. In principle there could be an infinite number of universes with different physical laws, and only in a tiny fraction of them would people survive the translation necessary to enter a universe. Luckily the universe of Unicorn Jelly is one where people can survive, or else there wouldn't have been a comic.
P.S. Unicorn Jelly, in the beginning, seems like a slightly silly and harmless story. It's a bigger story than it first appears, and I don't want to spoil it, but I will say that it is a story that could only be told in the universe in which it is set. The very nature of the Universe of the story drives the plot! So, the story of Unicorn Jelly meets my personal standard for science fiction: the story wouldn't be the same if you took away the science (fictional science, here).
P.P.S. If you like Unicorn Jelly and want more multiversal craziness from the same author, the follow-on story To Save Her is kinda set in the same universe. I mean, it's actually set in an infinite number of variations of the same universe, and features a somewhat infinite cast of characters, but we follow along a half-dozen or so through their story arc, as they visit about a half-dozen alternate universes. (They only visit alternates of their own universe, where the physical laws are the same.)

Re:Seems like a problem that could be fixed...
Actually, I think war with Iran is MORE likely under Obama than it would be under Santorum exactly because the Democrats won't do squat if he pulls another Libya. Obama has set a huge precedent there by conducting war without even getting permission under the War Powers Act.
This cartoon basically sums up Democrats' relationship to Obama, War, and Iran:
-
Re:"It's up to consumers to make a choice"
If you re-elect Obama, you're just going to get more of the same.
Personally, I'm thinking it might be better if Santorum wins, because it should accelerate America's collapse. Things will be better when America collapses and breaks up, just like things were better after the Soviet Union collapsed and broke up. What we have right now obviously isn't working, and nothing's going to fix it now; it'll be better if we just split up the country so different regions can go their separate ways. Let the southeast and the heartland states have a fundamentalist theocracy; the rest of us are suffering by expending all our energy trying to prevent it.
And no, I'm not a shithead, I'm just calling things like I see them. I see tons of liberals strongly backing Obama and his policies. Not all, mind you; obviously, you're an exception, and I see many others too. This guy, a self-proclaimed leftist, has a whole comic series complaining about them. I'd guess about half the liberals are like you, and the other half are Obama lovers.

Re:Just keep calm...
No, they aren't. The ones who are howling with rage are being shunned by "mainstream" Democrats on message boards like democraticunderground and dailykos from what I hear. This guy even has a comic series about the phenomenon.
For example, a quick browsing of DailyKos yields this article claiming Obama is the best president ever.

Re:Yea, well...
Liberals detest him almost as much as right-wing radio talkshow hosts do.
I haven't seen much of this. Instead, most liberal-leaning sites/blogs seem to be 100% behind him, and people that aren't are treated like pariahs.
This guy (a self-proclaimed leftwinger) even has a couple websites bashing liberals for their backing of Obama:
http://americanextremists.thecomicseries.com/So yes, there's a small core of liberals that do detest him, but most of them seem to have completely changed their opinions on everything so they don't have to admit to themselves they were wrong. I think this is called "cognitive dissonance". The real test will be the Democratic Primaries: if Obama gets re-nominated, then that'll prove that the Democratic voters really are this stupid. If they kick him out and nominate someone who isn't a clone of GWB, then it'll disprove it. If I were betting, I'd bet that Obama will get the nomination. There've been four times in history when a sitting US President did not get the nomination of his party for the second term, but those were all back in the days when voters weren't quite as stupid as they are now.

Re:The real issue
My guess is that ultimately, Obama will veto the law allowing citizens to be held indefinitely without trial,
Obama did suggest he would veto this bill, but not because he cares about civil liberties. His threat was based on the notion that the President already has these powers and that the Congressional mandate would be an usurpation of and interference with those powers.
Here is a quote from the White House's position on the bill:
Detainee Matters: The Administration objects to and has serious legal and policy concerns about many of the detainee provisions in the bill. In their current form, some of these provisions disrupt the Executive branch's ability to enforce the law and impose unwise and unwarranted restrictions on the U.S. Government's ability to aggressively combat international terrorism; other provisions inject legal uncertainty and ambiguity that may only complicate the military's operations and detention practices.

Obama supporters are very neatly summed up in this cartoon: http://americanextremists.thecomicseries.com/comics/156

Re:Missing the point.
I love how the comment about GWB gets no mods, but the comment about Obama gets a Flamebait mod. Typical idiot liberals on Slashdot; as if there's really any difference between GWB and Obama.

Re:Bush certainly never did that
The healthcare "reform" was just a big corporate give-away and did little if anything to actually improve healthcare. The fact that the Dems wasted all their political capital on it when there were so many other things they could have fix speaks volumes.
Who cares about the US's appearance abroad? What does that do for the economy, or all the other things that are ailing this nation? Total waste of time and jet fuel. No, differing rhetoric is not important; when your actions don't line up with your words, people eventually see you as a liar.

Re:Sincerity?
I'm sorry, I don't see any real difference between them at all, except that the Reps pander to the religious far-right, and the Dems pander to the left. But when they're in power, the Dems don't actually follow through on any of their promises, and then just blame it on the republicans. Their policies are all the same: big wars, bailouts for big corporations, etc.

Re:absolute nonsense
I wish you were right, but sadly, you're not. Just go to any Democrat discussion board, and you'll find that he has a strong and loyal legion of followers who make up any excuse possible to cover for him and his actions. Whereas these people back in Bush's reign were loudly complaining about all of Bush's policies, now that Obama has adopted these policies (and made some even worse), these same people are loudly defending him and these policies.
One guy even has a daily comic series about the situation here:

Re:Excellent article on what's wrong
Right, as if the republocrats are any different from the demoplicans. But it isn't just the lack of a second party (more commonly called a third party) to our current mono-party system with D and R tints, the mono-party has effectively controlled election laws and ballot laws to keep any competition at bay.
And of course, there's the lesser evil kool aide to get over:
