Personally . . .
. . . I'd like to see Anthony Björne on the ballot, he'd probably make a better President than anyone else up there.
However, he's not, so the next best thing for me is John Kerry.
Now I don't want to turn this particular thread into a flamefest, but yeah, I'm a proud member of KULT Black Milk and I'm supporting Kerry - mainly because he's a human being, willing to admit his mistakes (such as his support for the war in Iraq, which he believes to be a colossal balls-up).
Bush, however, seems to be more along the lines of a machine or an amoeba (but I don't want to insult the amoeba) - stimulus, response, stimulus, response, "I am the President, I am infallible, I can do no wrong" (yeah, right!).
I never liked Bush when he first ran for office in 2000, and I like him even less now - hell, I have more respect for Saddam Hussein than I do for Bush! -
mod parent up
seriously though, does anyone know of a "computer" above this number, active allready, and one above 360TFLop/greater performance other than the following(which isn't complete yet?): http://news.zdnet.com/2100-9584_22-966312.html ? actually though the whole point of this post is just to point out that the grandparent is incorrect, whereas the parent is not.
In case anyone is skeptical about the parent post. In fact now that I think about it, seriously, guys; the linux number isn't very high. you linux users out there should contribute. join project wool clock

on climbing atop a mountain
mabye that's just it
mabye we convince ourselves that we can have both an open market and low taxes and it materializes due to the gross will of the people. Mabye it's the simple act of confusing ourselves that *allows* us to successfully pull of an impossibility, and that the worst thing you could wish on the nation is for it to wake up.
directional chaos, my friend.
"You are treading your path of greatness: no one shall steal after you here! your foot itself has extinguished the path behind you, and above that path stands written: Impossibility.
and when all footholds disappear, you must know how to climb upon your own head: how could you climb upward otherwise?"

Corporations?
hold on there.
1) Monopolies create market inefficiencies
2) corporate power structures are evil Just because corporations are the cause of grief does not automatically make them some sort of scapegoat unworthy of attention. There are a lot of occurances that are unpleasant in this world, rainstorms, for example, happen sometimes, and for some are benificial, for others, they are harmful[ie tornados, etc] we must deal with them, as rational beings interacting with our environment. Sometimes that might mean revolution, sometimes that means just dealing with it.
great post btw. -

Re:Your taboos may vary...
no it's not as arbitrary because it gives the best outcome, given propper understanding of your environment. the potential to acheive 'the best outcome' outweighs any other system, until shown otherwise, no? this isn't randomness, this is optimisation. this hardly seems to me as arbitrary as just doing what you are told at all times.
and why not add e)? so long as you follow precedence a->e it shouldn't harm anyone. or if necessarry, add
e) harm no one*
f) do what you want.
a system that harms no one(As opposed to harming innocent people for stupid reasons). and furthermore why *not* have a system like this? without it, there's a chance everyone will be just trying to do things for their own self interest(arbitrary), and will. hell don't forget g) "if you don't know what to do in any situation, consider the ecconomics. cash is not the only thing in life, but it's really, really important." as the catch-all, and you have a complete code.(this of course isn't really a standard one in atheism, but is rather from ku lt. but its only one example of such optimisation, and may not be the best case. but it's a pretty good case, and far from arbitrary.
*actually it would make more sense to harm only those who harm others maliciously, or something to that extent. however i think that would open some cans of worms, and while it may be beneficial, may not be necessarry. i personally, beyond being busy with school, would have tried to kill one or two people whether i was an atheist, or whatever i am now. and they would deserve it. all the people that i've harmed in any way had it coming(ie if you pull a knife on someone and attack them, don't expect them to not say, hurt you in self defense, etc.) -
Re:Does it matter?
after watching the kult rise (and fall?), and keeping into mind the exponential growth of the world's population, i'ld have to disagree with you. we created our own unique "kulture", and with it it's own traditions, manerisms, symbols, 'gods', and so on and so forth. being a mostly open society, we all took part in it to some extent or other...and while perhaps we are not nor will ever be an established culture to the extent that say, the romans or the british were... we were definitely on the way in that direction.
i'm sad that some cultures lose their grip on humanity and fade into the death... but the amount of 'culture' more potent, and deep than anything we've seen so far is actually _growing_, whether you believe it or not. how many ethnicities were there 100 years ago? today? cargo cults much? with every divergence of religion(see scientology), and state(see quebec) and stuff like 2600... new cultures begin to form. and with it _new_ poetry, new literature, new music, and so on. as the population grows, and is more able to feed itself(culture only really grows once people have time...you can't have much of a culture if your held in one razorwire lined Nike sweatshop at machine gun forced to work 20.5 hours a day. )...more cultures will really shine. -
freindship
and then you get the screwed up freaks who's main focus as far as freindship goes is 'a person who is not actively trying to kill or harm me in any way'. yes. that was my definition once upon a time. and i heard it echoed later on in a couple of places independant of my home town, once i found the internet. surely, the internet has changed the entire dynamics of freindship, as i thought that most of the people out there were totally against me, when in reality, they were just trying to save themselves face by picking on or just plain not supporting the freak. now with the internet the 'freaks' can 'team up' with eachother...so there HAS to be a new level of freindship screw-ed into the worldview of even the most unfreindly. right?

"Everyone"
if, and possibly only if, everyone does this, will it be time for the great revolutions akin to that fortold by marx. Capitalism will have outlived it's use
(honestly, how many people are involved in 'overhead' jobs these days? how many lawyers, bankers, financial analysts, and so on and so forth) and it will be time for "everyone" to get together, overthrow the current regieme and live in relative utopian bliss. mabye no revolution will be necessarry, and it will be a democratic process. due to the election-rigging and media control lately i don't see this as likely, but hey, it's possible.
the next step will be convincing the outsourced labour to not be our slaves, and not to try to enslave us. but that's just a suggestion.
i'm exactly who you are talking bout, by the way. when i graduate from university, i know i'm not going to be able to get a job in my feild. i'm probably going to be deliverring papers and or flipping burgers for my entire life...which is starting to sink in because this weekend i found what could be someone worth marrying...and i can't raise a family on less-than-minnimum-wage, period. know what the worst part about this situation is? that i refuse to charge to help people with their computers. i know a few of people who basically make a living either a) making websites and b) reparing/doing service on peoples' home computers, and i see this as sick. even if only in virtue of being in kult, i refuse to charge for such service if i can help them with it. i think it's sick that people take their knowledge and then profit on it, when they could be helping people.
if you want to help a multinational corporation, go hard, charge them through the teeth...but these are human beings. people who are just trying to live their lives. if enough people help other people for free, the others will be *forced* to have sane pricing standards by sheer competition.
i remember living at home with my family, getting my computer infected with spyware, and screwing the winsock up... and while i was willing to install the operating system(win98) over again, the place we got our computers told us not to because they had the drivers and they didn't give us the drivers... so we had them to a routine os reinstall..they charged us like 150$. 150$?!! for a fucking re-install of fucking windows? i've installed windows a good 4 dozen times, and linux at least twice that many, and i'm not even really good at this sort of thing. if me and my collective of peers can do something there is no fucking way you are justified in charging a family 150$ for it. that's just sick, and greedy. but they get away with this, and they make their livings like this. and i will live the rest of my life now trying to put them out of business.
want to learn how to play the piano? have some spare time for me to teach you in? if i can get enough money together on my own to fix my piano, i'll teach you for free, if you let me. computer borked? i'll fix it, if i can. for free.
to keep this on topic, has anyone thought of music? -
i hate to say it
but the guy is right.
i once had music on mp3.com, and i know damn well that those three to five songs i gave away the rights to, are, well, owned by someone else now. i personally don't care, people stealing my music, both as in 'making copies' and 'claiming it as their own' i see as a *good thing*, because at that point, you *know* you have been doing the right thing all along.
you knew you were selling out when you agreed to their liscencing agreement. just like the rest of you out in the world who use windows, who use adobe, who use macintosh software, and the bunch of you punks who just click 'i agree' without reading anything. guess what?! you sold out! you didn't even get anything in return, too, except mabye some buggy software!
i have not clicked 'i agree' in almost a year to anything that was not the GPL or something that i can agree with on every point.
oh and NEVER EVER UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES sign an agreement where the other party can change the agreement at any point without telling you and then have the contract still bind you. mp3.com did this, and this one line, however seemingly harmless extends as far into the depths of hell as anyone can imagine. they can own you, all your music, your girlfriend and her pets. and hey, its your fault!
summary? let them steal your music. don't make a fuss, instead, praise them for it. say *go for it!* and let your sound, your work be distributed by them. don't lie, and this means don't agree to something that you don't agree with, and don't agree with things that are totally harmful to you. and if you are sick of the riaa think about joining kult, and we'll see if there's anything we can do on this front. -
form error, wtf?
you are definitely right, in calling it a witch hunt. over at the kult there is a specific ferocity, keeping us together, keeping us united, and keeping those of us who are pissed off with a venue to vent at(namelessly, nambla, and child porn sites and those who back them)
but mabye all this activity against such a force also has an echo behind it producing people more attracted to this sort of thing. I can't speak for myself here (i have discussed myself as a particular case elsehwere in this thread) but if day in day out a person thinks about child porn(man we are going to kill those child porn bastard satans!) its still in your head, day in, day out. and that's got to mess you up, in my opinion. even just the idea. the idea of rape. the idea of molestation. a person, in my opinion is never the same after coming to understand even the basic precepts of these ideas... i can imagine an actual *rapist* or something with no understanding that females have feelings or the like...breaking apart if they ever came to understand what they actually do(women aren't people, after all, right?)
anyways, so, disregarding the justification of the witch hunt, does it change the personality of it's participants? does the acknowledgement of rape by millions of feminist twist the concept of man, love, and life? does the existance of child porn change normal sexuality? does the existance of a taboo'ed subject cause greater interest in it? and if so, what is the nature of the effect/greater interest? -
I really hate to say it
but mr inoshiro has a good point.*cringe*
with rent, the amount you owe is dependant upon how long you live*, and is just as nasty if not worse than debt that has been acknowledged elsewhere.
except that in some cases it is much worse, because if you do not keep up in your payments you find yourself without shelter, and if you are lucky enough to live anywhere similar to here(saskatchewan), you freeze to death...
debt on the other hand, just grows more and more unmanigable.
take for example my old apartment. at 280$ per month, 12 months a year, for 100 years of renting would have meant roughly 336,000$ of debt, which must be paid off in the installments that the rentor wishes, or higher...
and by the way, it takes more than debt to enslave someone.
if you really wanted to do that, you would need to take a hold of something else that they need in their life, for example, the small 10X10 room that keeps them from freezing to death when they aren't allowed to be at work(see above),
OR alternatively to take hold of their wage or job security, so that they must do your bidding otherwise be eternally enslaved in another way.
if anything, however, rent is MORE debt than any other debt you may be able to imagine, because unlike other debt, that you can try to overlook, there is an automatic, expected result of not paying your rent. freezing to death or loss of livingspace.
on the other hand, all of this is really just different heads of the same beast---the stuff that people without mountains of cash can be persuaded to do horrible and terrifying things with. fuck capitalistic tyrrany!
*how long you live under rule of this rentor
and to keep from being moderated offtopic too many times,... i am visiting my parents in saskatoon [from regina, saskatchewan, canada]. i took a shower the day i got back, but when i got out i noticed my pants were all missing!!! it seems my parents dont appreciate the grunge-GNU/Hippie-not_quite_homeless look i have inherited lately...so they turned most of my clothes to rags.
so i got socks, pants, and underwear to replace my other clothes upon return. So as a christmas\birthday present, i got to have my parents dress me for two weeks :\ -
nonoonononononooo
one at a time. keep one on him from the moment he steps into your country, until the moment he leaves.
unless you live in the states, at which point i would suggest 'commit suicide' or 'join the kult' instead. -
i'm certianly glad the world
is so clearly black and white. I can now look onto the ways of my friends and peers who have assisted homeless shelters, batterred womens shelters, food-for-cheap units, and the like, and pity them, for they accomplish nothing. I can look on adbusters, the cult surrounding NO LOGO, my local universitie's student newspaper, union, health plan, dental plan, the eff, as completely despotic and fascist orginizations that bring great harm on everyone who is a member of them.
I can look on the entire Debian Linux distrobution and know that they have accomplished nothing, because nothing collectivist has ever done good, and i must actively fear them because they seek to destroy me, as a user.
That the community environment that thekult (direct action cyberpunk orginization) fosterred, and that to an extent still goes on at rantradio(a not-for-profit, non-commercial, independant internet radio station) must be fought against at all costs. That everything that isn't greed driven is immoral, and counterproductive.
[/sarcasm]
Sure, there are socialist international orginizations, countries, states, unions, orginizations, communes, cliques and whathaveyou that have gone bad. I've seen examples of all of the above. but this does not imply that everything that is done in the name of collective productivity, in the name of humanity as a whole, or a section of humanity...FOR the good of everyone instead of a select few, is in vain.
there are arguments to that effect, but they are not the ones you appear to represent.
but even Plato was keen to point out that good states inevidibly corrupt, and the dialectic will eventually 0wn you.
Hell even the idea of a _corporation_ itself is slightly solcialistic...
while some people seem to think that in order to be pro socialism in any or all ways, is to think that you MUST be the same sort of socialist that would support the regeimes that have failed miserably, and furthermore, that these same sort of regeimes follow from any other kind of socialism by default when both of these things are false. just as not all countries have turned out to be war-driven imperialist states attempting to conquor the world and enslave everyone...likewise there are orginizations that are collective in ideal that do not end up turning to disaster.
i tend to see the suspended state, either way, as pretty ideal, in case my examples havn't shown this... socialist infrastructure paves the way for True Capitalist Progress(it's amazing how worker productivity can be when your work-force is not working with broken limbs they cannot fix, and plauge they cannot cure) as one example,
another example a feudal/exploitive/"corpolitical" imaginary fascist prison-state where most people in a country are imprisoned for free hard labour...and then a state within this state building itself up zion style to house those who are interested in life, in the collective goodwill of themselves, their families, and their communities.
no one in the MIDDLE state would complain about the lack of civil liberty, even if freedoms such as the freedoms of religion and press were not extant.
but no doubt even this state within a state idea i have can be corrupted...
i think i've gone on to far and have wanderred from my original intent somewhat. but make no mistake, your black and white fallacy filled way of thinking about the whole order-of-mankind-orginization leaves a sour taste in my mouth, at least. -
favorite site
this was a RANDOM url. i could have picked another one, like slashdot.org, or goatse.cx, or msdn.ca but i chose that one. and MY favorite site on the internet is most definitely mine(which is offline atm
:/ )...but also jems such as deviantcontrol.com and of course thekult.net ...really hold my attention as well. in the meanwhile +5 insightful? what the fuck...??? -
Remember;
- the matrix is a "prison for your mind".
- the matrix is an attempt at taking capital wealth from multiple places and redistributing it.
- the matrix is a kung fu movie for the new age.
- the idea of matrix is a lie, much like any other religion or cult or fictional work. but we want to beleive it...because of some unknown urge to subvert our consious states and fill ourselves with the numbing opiates of fantasy.
i think it has accomplished quite a lot, and considering how vehemently anti-warner-brothers/mass-media i usually am, i can say honestly i have not been inspired by anything(except perhaps pink floyd) as much as i have been by the matrix, and the animatrix in particular.
i have my tickets for a showing in some 7 hours.
without the matrix, orginizations such as the kult would have never taken off, definitely, and i would not be a computer science major, philosophy minor. I wonder if the matrix could then be compared to the 'hackers' or 'wargames' of our decade, hmmm...? -

terrorists
terrorists are motivated by embitterred love. they are not fighting a human enemy, with feelings and fear --- they are fighting an inhumane monster, possibly evil, in the case of the islamists, they see us as decedance, evil, and sexual perversion _in carnate_, spilling our corrupt semen on their land and hearts. until you understand this you have no hope of understanding that, there are linux/OpenSourceSoftware users, that are very stressed over the ongoing oppression of many peoples from large multinational conglomerates and other entities not worth mentioning in specific --- what would you do if enough politicians were greased that linux became illegal to use? what would you do if it became a felony to use an open source operating system? a felony to view source without a liscence? illegal to even talk about software algorythms that are under copyright? what then? would you join with the rest ofthe brewing resistance and begin to resist? would you, when red/martial law is declared indefinitely, be willing to stand up and fight to restore lost freedoms? to vanquish the monster that has ruined the greatness that was your country? perhaps some of this may not apply if you live in a country with sane laws, and sane lawmakers. i assume, quite possibly incorrectly that you live in the states, canada, the UK or australia, and with a possible kindred sympathy if you live in china or some nearby-china place.

the revolution!
actually i think it does run apache now come come to think of it...honestly though, what do you expect - html 1.0 ?

coherancy
am i being incoherant or unreasonable in some way?
everyone should be connected by now. i don't mean everyone should be connected with the latest-Raedon-wearing-pentiumV... i mean... everyoen should have access. public library terminals, and the like are great [except that i'm not allowd in the public library local - they wouldn't give me a card at the time because i had no house/livingspace. go figure. ]
375$ in a Lifetime so far.[ or around 100$ a year... ] mostly due to dialup.
there are *not* cheap ISP's local. at least that i've found. while i do agree with Supply&Demand and the Drive-For-Profit-above-all-else that is the current markets... there is a lot you could do with free internet. i mean, think of how much getting connected to the net costed in the past, long distance charges, on top of whatever the ISP charged... 60$ a month [standard ?DSL] or what i'm paying now [25$ a month/Cable"Lite"] ... is NOTHING...and yet look what happened as the price came down abit.
people acctually connected.
interesting point about the 'and you don't have time'. i'm not really sure what to say about that
...i suppose i just like being able to email peers elsewhere in the world [at roughly the cost of postage mail]...and being able to google for uknown things wheras before i got to be just ignorant. and one day
one day
i won't be on win3.1 any more...[nevermind the entire reason i'm past DOSSHELL5.0 at all is because of someone i know online :) ]. and of course...anyone who thinks they can go to university, here at least, without a connection to the internet is fooling themselves. -
attmept ii
i wrote 2 replies one at slashdot, one at kuro5hin. i had backups.
and somehow i simulttaneaously logged out in kuro5hin and closed the remaining 3 windows, with regular keystrokes. wtf.
i'll spare you most of the points and get to the meat. according to the article, this system is designed by the military, to harbour communictation between "assymetric" groups such as terrorist orginizations...and i think this everyone should pay attention to. these people want to replace irc, email, and the telephone forms of communication with this massive overbloat stuff : but that's not important. what is important about them doing this is that the military will have complete control over the form of communication, in this case. at least with email you can know at least to an extent who is seeing your mail...and ditto with irc....but a system partially funded by the military? iidono. creeps me out.
on the other hand... there is big differences between buying cobalt armour[a pragmatic object in a _game_] and a pair of virtual jeans that will NOT make you look any less ugly. -
its so sad, isn't it?
graduate university
get a good job
profit[make lots of money]!
----------
eternal happiness
errrrrr
i was having a conversation with someone today on this exact topic. he was proposing a more "active" teacher-students relationship because of the low attention span of kids these days. [i don't know if he'll ever get naywhere with his idea but i'm glad to see that someone takes people with no attention span and utilizes this in some way! i mean, if teachers would stop trying to drug away attention deficit/hyperactivty and start to utilize the hurricane winds within, imagine what kind of things we could produce??]...
in the meanwhile, i came to this university to become "englightened" and "educated", not to get a job...i thought i'd be happier if i lived my entire life poor but while knowing [ kind of like Socrates, even though i hadn't really studied him yet... ]... then i got into Socrates and i felt i was in the total right place, even though i really didn't like being poor. then i got into Descartes, and then i wasn't really sure about anything, except that i didn't like being poor. then i got into Neitzsche.
tis all in vain? i'm not sure. but i can tell you that the original reason i came to university ammounted to the quest for god. yes, i'm an atheist. [or i suppose, i was an atheist?]. presupposing symmetry. presupposing the law of noncontradiction. presupposing an englightenment to acheive. presupposing that englightenment has anything to do with truth. presupposing that englightenment is something you sacrifice your entire life and suffering and everything else to acheive. presupposing that englightenment has nothing to do with love, which has nothing to do with sex[did i say that right?], presupposing that what i was looking for was going to feel good. this last one broke me. that the truth was supposed to feel good..."that there would be someone tending the light at the end of the tunnel..." that truth is there is no god...the truth is a cold, emotionless truth, something that if i have anything to say with my experience so far, i'm not sure if i ever want to open my eyes again. to anything. of course i have to, to keep feeding myself...because i really don't like being poor. i dont want to be rich, mind you, and i've passed over many many chances to gain physical wealth so far, in so that i DO NOT WANT TO SUPPORT 'THE SYSTEM'[i prefer another system]...so that i'm still pretty poor.
but food is not enough. despite the rational side of me knowing full well what a horrible thing love is...
...i am after all male. the system welcomes me back with open arms...the contradiction! what the hell was the otpic again? oh yea, university becoming a necessary follow up for highschool. so ok, why in your opinion[open question], should we go to university?...if of course, it's a bad thing to follow everyones' highschool with...? i think i've lost track, mabye someone could help me out here?
thinking again...and of course, i can't find love without being a descent accomplished human being...and this can't be done without university, oh wait yes it can, but it can be done with university as well...but this sounds to me sick, going to university to find a love that will inevidably throw me into the pits of dispair and from this hopeless uncertianty into bitter loathing and hating everything...
oh wait... -
sounds farmilliar :)
actually...i know your trying to joke off of the fight club. however...if you take a look at any of these,..all of these(look under sean kennedy show in rantradio)...have a similar idea i believe...that is...starting as a multilevel terrorist orginization with cells capable of operating independantly.
originally at least
i just remember one day...after joining an international terrorist orginization...being ...in the prescence of a beautiful woman...who made soap...during a portion of my life where i travelled to meat this beautiful woman...(Thus loosing all sense of direction)...and being a coffee induced insomniac. remembering the fight club during all of this was scary, to say the least. -
eh
you mean the CIA HASNT been wiretapping me for the past 6 months (or at least scince i've joined what used to be an international/internet terrorist orginization
...or at least listening to pirate radio?...surely either the CIA or CSIS has been on notice of me for quite some time :)
oh yea and i agree... i'll bake cookies for anyone who can prove they killed bill gates and or took down everything microsoft offline for at least a week. (mmm...home baked cookies) -

maybe its just me, but with subscriptions,
/. is essentially doubling the possible income if enough of use sign up.
"We need to have subscriptions so folks can turn off ads"
"Here Mr. advertiser, we get a quarter million unique a day, pay us big $$$"
Have ads or don't. Let the other news sites under the umbrella you folks got bought into whore their sites with subscriptions and huge banners for spying on your neighbor's wife with miniature webcams while playing online casinos and using penis enlargement kits so your wife can make better use of her 'women's viagra' as you wait for your real estate investment to bring in a huge return in 30 days like the nice man on the phone promised.
this worst part is, im not kidding.
and its not futile. nothing is futile. its a matter of finding people willing to put forth their time and work for free, and suprisingly if you look ALL OVER THE NET, everyone is doing it. lack of bandwidth is just an excuse for lack of motivation. :P
