Big Money.Sounds very promising if this does indeed come to pass. I wonder why the EUV LLC (which consists of Intel, AMD, Micron and Lawrence Livermore National Laboratories among others) seem to be waging their bets on Extreme Ultraviolet Lithography instead of looking at these new technologies? This new Lithography process is supposed to give us 10Ghz chips in the not so distant future. Then again, maybe these won't cost $15 a piece, so that could be the reason right there.

Illegality of it all?I was thinking about this a while back, and unfortunately, I believe it may be illegal, according to many EULA's, (end user license agreements) for money to change hands when playing many popular video games. I know you can't charge people to play certain videogames, and I think some licenses extend that to gambling as well. Unfortunately, I don't have a copy of any gaming EULA in front of me at the moment. Could someone confirm my thoughts on this...

Express my dissatisfaction."In November the group approved seven suffixes:
.aero, .coop, .info, .museum, .name, .pro, and .biz..."The majority of these names make no sense to me. I know what each name represents, but my question is why? Do the members of ICANN actually use the Internet? I thought for sure they would approve a
.sex or a .xxx TLD, considering the sheer volume of pornography on the Internet, and how everyone seems to think we should do something about it. A .xxx TLD sure would help us admins with firewalling rules. Wouldn't even have to worry too much about enforcing compliance either, seems like anyone who runs a porn site would actually want to have a .xxx domain.Penguins run around naked everyday! This could be very bad.I realize that this can be countered somewhat by proper shielding, but a powerful Electro Magnetic Pulse weapon could effectively send a nations military back into the stone age, or at least the WWI and WWII era. This could drastically effect modern warfare as we know it today. This site has a great overview and discussion of EMP technology.
I think if this type of weapon were exceptionally effective, it would force humans to basically bring back good ole trench warfare or at least rethink our current mechanized strategies which rely heavily on centralized command and information dissimination and analysis. While no war is a good war, modern tools of destruction, such as laser guided "smart" bombs have certainly helped to reduce casualties of civilians and other non-miliarty personnel. This could be a very powerful weapon indeed for the country that perfects it.

My thoughts.I'll make this short and sweet (like my ex-girlfriend). Being a Geek does not in any way make you unpopular, it never has. I consider myself to have been "born Geek"(started programming BASIC in 6th grade), but I was always very popular in school (voted best personality senior year, toot! toot!, and even played College football for a Division 1 school). Anyhow, it's the stereotypical traits that some geeks have (anti-social, fearing parties, bad dressing, etc...) that make them unpopular with the masses, or perhaps they make themselves unpopular because of these traits. The important thing to remember, is that not all geeks have these traits (I'm shy, but not necessarily anti-social. I sit in front of the computer for 12 hours a day, but I also like playing golf and funneling beer).
I think what makes a person a Geek is, perhaps, above average intelligence, and more importantly, genuine curiousity about the world that surrounds them. I'd also add to that an internal need to discover how things function and how to make those functions function better or differently. Looking back on my definition, that sounds a great deal like the definition of a scientist. Luckily for us Geeks, scientists are "valued" by society.

Mandrake is good for one very special reason.I've been a RedHatter for years now, but I recently decided to give Mandrake 7.2 a chance on a dual celeron machine I have. The installation went very well, but the main thing I was impressed with was the inclusion of a journaling filesystem. That's right, ReiserFS is included with Mandrake 7.2. You can create and format a partition with journaling goodness right out of the box. I loved this. I ended up needing it too, cause I had to hard reboot my box about 25 times due to a bad motherboard. Anyhow, I never lost any data, and I didn't have to wait an eternity for FSCK to do the hokey pokey after all those reboots. I'm hooked on journaling...

That could be very dangerous. As another poster mentioned, I believe you would be much worse off using the bank card method, because of liability issues. With a credit card, it's pretty easy to protect yourself from fraud. If your card gets stolen or used improperly, all you are liable for is $50.00 maximum usually. However, with a bank card, there are more stipulations to the $50.00 limit, so if you were charged $7000 and you only had $100 in the bank, this could possibly put a serious hurting on your credit rating. I've enclosed some relevant laws I found on this site.
- The Equal Credit Opportunity Act says that you can limit your risk when your credit card is lost or stolen and that you can correct errors without damaging you credit rating.
- The Fair Credit Reporting Act sets the procedure in clearing and correcting the errors on your credit record.
- The Fair Credit Billing Act sets up the procedures for creditors to promptly correct the billing mistakes. It allows you to withhold payments on defective purchases and limits the risk of your lost or stolen credit cards. The law defines a billing error as any charge: -- for something you didn't buy or for a purchase made by someone not authorized to use your account; -- that is not properly identified on your bill or is for an amount different from the actual purchase price or was entered on a date different from the purchase date?
- Truth In Lending limits your liability in Lost or Stolen Credit Cards. You do not have to pay for any unauthorized charges made after you
notify the card company of loss or theft of your card. So keep a list of your credit card numbers and notify card issuers immediately if your card is lost or stolen. The most you will have to pay for unauthorized charges is $50 on each card.
- The Electronic Fund Transfer Act provides protection for ATM, debit or check cards. Your liability for an unauthorized withdrawal can vary: -- Your loss is limited to $50 if you notify the financial institution within two business days after learning of loss or theft of your card or code. -- But, you could lose as much as $500 if you do not tell the card issuer within two business days after learning of the loss or theft. -- If you do not report an unauthorized transfer that appears on your statement within 60 days after the statement is mailed to you, you risk unlimited loss on transfers made after the 60-day period. That means you could lose all the money in your account plus your maximum overdraft line of credit. (Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System, 1993)

Storage mediums in space.Sounds like they've had a bad case of "If something can go wrong, it will." Anyhow, the writeup states"...its RAM corrupted every 1 or 2 days in orbit as it crosses radiation belts..." This made me curious as to the major storage medium being used in space? If RAM can be so easily corrupted, it seems that most electronic storage would be just as problematic a storage medium. Do harddrives and/or CDROM storage have this same problem? Is heavy shielding a solution for this? Just curious.

Close to home.I live within 10 miles of three power plants. One is coal powered, the other, natural gas, and the last one is nuclear powered. They are in the process of doing a $90 million upgrade to the closest one to my house (natural gas). It's been interesting to watch the construction process at least. It's unfortunate that there isn't a way to store electricity somehow, and this is in fact why the improvements are taking place. It'll allow them to start generating electricity in a short amount of time, whereas currently it can take nearly a whole day for the steam powered turbines to come up to speed.
On a more somber note, there are sirens all around the area where I live that are used to indicate a problem at the nuclear plant. Problem is, if I ever do hear the sirens, I guess it'll probably only give me enough time to realize I will be dying soon. I'll probably be able to sue for lots more money if I die though

LawsWhile the above article deals more with censorship than with SPAM, per se, I find it interesting that even though there are already many federal and state laws dealing with unsolicited email you rarely hear of spammers being prosecuted. You would think that either the government or individuals would pursue this. What's the reasoning for this? I've never tried it, but are spammers really that hard to trace down?

Actually, I'm not a karma whore.I most certainly am not a karma whore. I'm just trying to relay a little historic information to my fellow Slashdot readers. Is that so wrong?
Speaking of Karma, did you know that the entymology of the word karma is Sanskrit. Not only that, but the word itself only dates back to 1827. The word whore, as you can imagine, dates back much earlier than that, however.

Background on the Sons of LibertyThe full title of the game is Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty. The Sons of Liberty was a secret organization formed in the American colonies to protest the Stamp Act of 1765. They were organized by merchants, businessmen, lawyers, journalists, and others most affected by the act.
The Stamp Act was a law passed by the British Parliament requiring publications and legal documents in the American colonies to bear a tax stamp. The act was vehemently denounced, and organizations formed to resist it. The Stamp Act Congress, Oct. 1765, adopted the Declaration of Rights and Grievances, which declared the tax unconstitutional because the colonists were not represented in Parliament. The Stamp Act was repealed in 1766.

Everyday.I was the Systems Admin for a special effects company in Los Angeles for the past 5 years or so, and I used to back up the sessions from the Silicon Graphics Onyx Infinite Reality they had onto tape all the time. The software they used, (Discreet Logic Flame) could back up to a number of tape formats, including D1 and Digital Betacam. I would also backup the filesystem to a Sony DTF machine. This machine used a variation of the Digibeta format to store the data to tape. The DTF drive actually used the same transport as the Digibeta VTR, so it was pretty reliable. The specs said it could do about 12MB/sec sustained transfer, I never could get it to go that fast, but it was much faster than any other tape device I've used.

Old technologyConsidering that the first transistor was created in late 1947, I guess we've come along way. But have we? Really the only thing we've been able to do is decrease the size of the transistor, so we are able to pack more into the same amount of space. This may be an issue for laptops, and PDA's, but I'm not really all that concerned about the size of the PC sitting under my desk. I think it's about time for a major computing breakthrough, something that really catapults computing into a new era, not unlike the invention of the transistor itself.

Dollars and sense.I think this was touched on by someone else, but it's worth repeating...any company that can afford to purchase and put into place 90,000 machines is going to have the capital necessary to staff a competent IT department to support said machines. Their IT department could also purchase software support contracts from any number of vendors. RedHat has a wide selection of Enterprise support services. Supplemental support contracts could also be put into place, such as the one from QuestionExchange. And if that's not enough, I can be had for a resonable hourly fee

Uses?Possible uses for this as listed in the article:
- Routing voice and fax traffic over the Internet
- Enabling automatic reply to voicemail messages
- Delivering content to wireless devices
I'm not sure if I understand the need for this system. Routing voice traffic is already done on a daily basis (dialpad.com). Automatic reply to voicemail messages is certainly something that exists already, and it seems everybody I know has some sort of wireless content service on their cellphone or PDA already.
What a directory like this could more likely be used for is marketing. Every night of the week, right when I sit down for dinner, I get a pointless marketing call from some schmoe who wants to sell me aluminum siding, or give me a great deal on a home loan. Conspiracy theories.Just saw this on the evening news last night. The segment I saw indicated that there is reason to believe that the power companies have artificially created this "power shortage" in order to increase their prices. This is a direct result of deregulation of the power industry, and has increased utility costs to some customers dramatically.
I have the pleasure of living within 10 miles of 3 powerplants. One is coal powered, the other gas, and the last one nuclear (yes that worries me). Anyhow, from what I understand, the powergrid in the US allows most any generating station to sell electricity to most parts of the US. However, I pass the gas powered generating station everyday on my way home, and it's only generating electricity 15% of the time (the turbines release lots of steam when it's generating). Funny thing, is that they are currently in the process of doing a $90 Million dollar upgrade to that plant, even though it seems to be rarely used.

Funny story. There was a funny story I read a while back about a company in the US contracting out its electronics manufacturing to an electronics company in Asia. In the contract proposal, the US company specified a defect percentage of 5% for the manufacturing process. The Asia company shipped all of the required components off the the company in the US, and included was a box of broken parts with a note stating "We were not sure why you wanted 5% of the parts defective, but we shipped them to you anyway."
I don't remember the exact story, or where I first saw it, so I can't give proper credit, but that was the gist of it.
