Lucky number 13
Fairly recently I had to battle with Microsoft to use my purchased copy of Office on a single computer. I had to call Microsoft thirteen times over the course of 2 weeks to get it working again. It's sad when a version you can download online offers you less hassles than the legally purchased version:

Re:oo - idea
Here is a page telling you how to just block all of APNIC, though that'll catch
.au, .jp, .nz, and a bunch of others as well, not just China and Korea. There is, however, a link on that page to info you can use to block only China and Korea. -
Re:RH9 Galeon won't start?!
I had this problem as well, read this for the fix.

Changing default browser.
I searched for quite a while, trying to figure out how to change the default browser for XD2 from Galeon to Opera. I always like to write up tutorials on little things like this when I come across them, so you can find that info here.

Tutorial
I just went through this process a few weeks ago and I must say I'm really glad I went through the trouble of setting it up...it's very cool. I actually wrote a tutorial about how to accomplish this by using NIS and NFS. I hope you find it helpful.
The only trouble you might run into with the setup I used is some file-locking issues with programs wanting to share the same preference files. -
Asian Pacific network
I started blocking off all Asian Pacific networks about 6 months ago. I wrote a quick Sendmail tutorial about it right here.
How well does this work? Extremely well. I've gone from receiving 20 pieces of SPAM a day to only 1 or 2 (which Spamassassin typically catches. I realize that this method won't work for everyone, but it has worked out quite well for me. -

How to block 90% of SPAM
I'm not sure about everyone else, but a good 90% (or more) of my SPAM comes from Asia Pacific networks. In order to combat this, I have used the access_db feature of Sendmail to block these off.
Over the past week since I've done this, I've blocked in excess of 100 pieces of SPAM from my INBOX. It seems to be working very, very well. You can read the article I wrote on how to accomplish this right here. The article just discusses the access_db file, but the comment right below lists the networks that I blocked.
I'm well aware this solution will not work for everyone, but for my needs, it has been a godsend. -

Re:Opposite Solution
I passed your suggestion on to the administrator. Better now?
-
Opposite SolutionThere is a new product called InsightConnecter available from Bynari that allows you to replace MS Exchange with a standard IMAP server. This is a good solution for those who are stuck using Outlook, but have access to a Linux server and don't want to use Exchange. It works as an Outlook Add-In and "tricks" Outlook into thinking that the IMAP server is Exchange Server.
It is not free, but very reasonably priced.
You can also find a brief summary of it here.

Oh...Perhaps if you guys were to just move Slashdot to some decent hardware instead of trying to run the site on that Palm III CmdrTaco got for Christmas 2 years ago, you wouldn't be having this problem.
I agree though, I find the SMP as well as the RAID support on the Palm to be rather lacking, but I'll be happy to send you my modified kernel for it if you wanna give that a shot.

I have this same problem.Running an Internet Services organization myself, we have a huge number of machines here to keep track of, so I have this same type of problem. In fact, I'll having a hell of a time trying to locate all those RedHat licenses I have. Anyone know where the user license gets placed after you download RedHat? I'm scared they're gonna come in and sue me...

CategoriesMandrake has always struck me as an odd distro. I'm not really sure where to place the thing. Is it geared for home users (and another poster mentioned), servers, hobbyists or what? Out of curiousity, I installed 7.2 on a dual proc machine here a while ago, and while I was impressed with some of the features (native ReiserFS and HPT360 support), their whole setup seemed rather "cutesy" to me.
I'm not sure what better way to describe it, but I just didn't care for the way they setup certain items and the entire look and feel left me somewhat annoyed. I realize things like wallpapers and icons can be changed fairly easily, and I'm certainly not knocking having multiple distros, as I do enjoy having the latest and greatest kernel/software releases included with Mandrake, but I'm just not sure who I would recommend Mandrake to. Perhaps I'm just biased because I've been using a certain other version of Linux for so long.

Digdug.IMO, I think that arcade games have lost some of their sheen in the past few years. Some of the games on the new consoles and the PC look every bit as beautiful as their arcade counterparts, and you simply can't beat the ability to play online with lots of your friends.
Even still, perhaps what's hard to replace is the social aspects of the arcade environment itself. I'll still play the odd arcade game or two if I'm in a bar with friends and it's lots of fun. So if Sony can combine the power of online games with the social aspects of the arcade I think they may have a powerful combination.

WellI didn't even read the article (don't think I want to), but this is either really good news or really bad news depending on how you view it. It's good in the sense that when Microsoft has to try to evoke some sense of American patriotism in order to promote and sell their products, that doesn't say very much for their product. At the same time, this kind of article gives great recognition to the Opensource movement.
Anyhow, I don't think I would want to be part of a society that negatively views a movement that promotes intelligence, helpfulness and open sharing and access to knowledge. If this movement really goes against "The American Way", I think I'll be catching to next flight out of town.

Not a major problem? From the article: "The re-identification process is highly complex and doesn't have a high yield: In a Census Bureau test, only 10 percent of survey participants could be re-identified.
Only 10 percent? Well, considering that the US has about 275 million citizens, I can sleep easier at night knowing that only 27 million of these can be re-identified.

Re: This is rediculous"Insurance fraud is a multi-billion dollar industry in the US alone."
While the Coalition against Insurance Fraud claims that 10% of all auto and home insurance claims are fraudulent ($79 billion per year they say), my quick review of the IRS data on the issue just doesn't seem to support that claim.
Considering the fact that in the State of Utah, there were an astounding 61 cases of insurance fraud in 1999 alone! WOW! 61 cases of fraud in one year coming from a state with 2,129,836 people. That's less than

Affecting purchases?Well this will certainly affect the advertising budgets of gaming magazines, but I question how well advertising works for games in general. The vast majority of games I buy, I purchase for the following reasons: 1) Good review from gaming websites 2)I played the demo and liked it or 3)I played it at my friends house and want to join in for some multiplayer action.
I don't think I've ever bought a game just because it had some hot babe or something in an ad I saw for it. Games are like movies, they sell by word of mouth.

Difficulties involved.Well, I wouldn't want to have this job. Even with the few sites I admin, this would be a major pain to make some of the necessary adjustments, seeing as how lots of stuff is simply hardcoded. You could do some Perl magic to make some things easier like: find
/home/directory/ "*.html" | xargs perl -p -i -e 's/sometext/replaced_with_this/g' (I think that works, my scripting skills are a quite rusty).Anyhow, I know one of the things they require is placing "ALT" tags for images. This would be a major undertaking for any medium to large website that didn't place ALT tags initially, at least to place relevant ALT tags on IMG's. Maybe you could follow the "letter of the law" by just putting the same ALT tag on all images on the site?

Couple of others.Multimedia creation software is definitely one area where Linux is still lacking. I haven't used it yet, but OFX looks like it's off to a nice start. My other suggestions for desperately needed GPL'd software would be a Premiere clone and a full featured multitrack sound editor a la Cool Edit Pro.
If you're interested in some other 3D software for Linux (some GPL, some not), there's 3dom, 3dpm, Behemot, G3D, Giram, 3delight, AC3D, and of course Blender as mentioned above.

Nvidia and work ethic.I really can't say too many bad things about Nvidia. They constantly pump out new drivers in order to satisfy feature hungry consumers. They go so far as to offer drivers for not only Windows, but Linux, BeOS and even OS/2. At this rate though, maybe one day soon, I'll have to worry about doing driver updates on my game console in order to get that extra fps.

Raves.I just have to rave about the database replication included with MySQL, what a fantastic feature. If you are interested in setting up replication yourself, you should read the nice tutorial on it over at PHPBuilder. The tutorial can be found here.

Limited only by the power of your imagination.I see a lot of people discussing the fact that you can only use Linux tools for the design, and this is definitely a limiting factor, but only if you're not already familiar with some of the great graphics tools for Linux. Most everyone here had heard of or used the Gimp, but don't forget that Blender provides a nice rich set of 3D tools under Linux, which allows you to create pretty cool images like this image from Manu Batot. There's also a nice simple sunset animation made with Blender that I downloaded right here.

My experiences with the HDTV beast.I used to be the Systems Admin for a special effects company and we did a symposium a while back on HDTV. We had JVC and Sony and a few other manufacturers loan us equipment so we could show our clients how great it all was. We even had one of those DVHS machines from JVC.
Some clients left impressed, while others left scratching their heads, but I think the most interesting thing about HDTV, is that while we had some large screen $10,000 HDTV's to display some of the video, we were also using standard Dell monitors to display HDTV signals as well. The picture quality is great, though limited to the 21 inches or so of the monitors we had on hand. Now if I just had a 40 inch "monitor" I'd be all set for the HDTV "revolution" if and when it ever arrives.

Common problemAs a Systems Administrator myself, it's painfully obvious that others here have run into the same problem I have when I call technical support. You have to take those extra few minutes of time to convince the fellow geek on the other end that you are indeed a member of "geekdom". I propose that we have a secret geek codeword that can immediately identify each of us as a member of the geek commmunity, kind of like fraternities all have secret handshakes. Hmmm...let me get the ball rolling here, I propose the phrase "I hear there's going to be a packet storm at midnight.". Any other suggestions?
