Re:The Open CD is no longer maintained
and what about the OpenDisc, the official fork/continuation of the project?
Yes, it's exactly what I was writing about. The OpenDisc includes Firefox 6.0.1. Sorry, probably I should've added a quote for context, but I did not imagine my post would end up with more upvotes than the parent.

The Open CD is no longer maintained
The Open CD project is no longer maintained, and has been succeeded by the The Open Disk effort. Highly recommended.

OpenDisc
I can't believe no one has mentioned the OpenDisc project, which is the succesor to the OpenCD. It's a project designed to collect the highest quality open source software on a disc. There's even an education version.

I remembered one from Canonical, but here's a regularly updated one: http://www.theopendisc.com/

OpenDisc, Quake & FreeDoom
You can check out theopendisc.org's games and give that along with them. Those are four pretty solid games. Another thing to check out would be the open sourced quake or even freeDoom.
Are these primarily for kids? I'm also confused why you're installing XP but giving an Ubuntu CD? Live disc? That has a ton of great puzzle games you can start with and even a few decent starting learning games. -

OpenEducationDisc
I've read a few comments touching on the point that you can teach kiddies what you like at school, but when they want to work at home and they can't, you snuff out that enthusiasm. I'm a teacher and we distribute http://www.theopendisc.com/education which is great for home use. The school have even started using some of the tools. Those educational software licences can be a real killer. especially with the yearly 'subscriptions'

Freedom #2
You can give the students a copy of The Open Disc on the first day of class. I doubt Adobe would be pleased if you did the same for their products.

Kudos to CNet for promoting FOSS. Lots of good programs listed. A link to http://theopendisc.com/ would've also been nice. More programs, more alternatives.

OpenEducationDisc
After teaching in a London school for 3 years I can agree. Burdening poor families with the cost of this software to use at home is awful and discriminatory. I have been pushing the OpenEducationDisc http://www.theopendisc.com/education and we now distribute it to all the kids who want it. Microsoft have even admitted that piracy does them good in schools. Stop picking on the little man!
