Re:MineI used to read XKCD but the geek content is too dilluted for my taste. like a chick flick with nerds. and for PA I don't need a feed. monday/wensday/friday afternoon when I walk in at work they are usually up. and now the feeds:
- bsdtalk various interviews with BSD people
- debaday not really a debianwhore but nice gems to be found there
- fleshbot who doesn't like porns?
- hubertf everyone's favorite NetBSD dev
- papod PA podcast
- tdwtf the daily wtf so you don't feel you are alone in your editor
- thinkgeek must buy everything!
- undeadly not dead yet

Re:Broadcast = PermissionI cannot imagine how anyone who broadcasts an unencrypted radio signal can complain if someone else picks up that signal. It would be like a TV station claiming that you are stealing their content because you tuned into their channel.
An interesting argument. This is slightly off topic, but in Virginia Radar Detectors are illegal. Yet their sole job is to pick up on openly broadcasts signals sent from radar guns. The radar gun is sending out a broadcast radio wave into the open air... and yet, when a radar detector picks that signal up and reacts to it, that is considered a crime.
To me it's the equivalent of this tee-shirt. The shirt picks up a signal.. doesn't read it per se, just picks up on its existence... much like a radar detector mounted in a car.
The only difference I see is that someone with a radar detector is more likely to use that signal to break the law. But to me, until the driver actually breaks the law (speeding that is), then where's the crime? -
Re:for a quick fix fine
But for the long traveling home, I use the predecessor of this smartphone, the Nokia E61i, to try some coding stuff out.
You can install Python on the Symbian Platform, and with a additional syntax highlighted editor - of course also programmed in python for symbian - it is much smaller than have always a laptop.
Also I have installed a Putty, and a IRC client for it, so when I recognize I am at home in a few minutes, I upload it to my home computer and then write further :)
Such things are already possible, if you want, and will get easier and more convinient when Linux arrives of the mobile phones.
If the only problem is the keyboard on this smartphones, why not using this holographic keyboard stuff already available?

You find them also much cheaper if you look a little bit. But the "Star Trek" - feeling you got when you use them, makes such a thing worth. Also the people in the bus who thinks you are a time traveller :)
If its too expensive, they are also physical, foldable bluetooth keyboards with the end-size of a cigarette box. -
Hubble Deep Field
Not entirely IT related, but I like both the Hubble Deep Field and the EM Spectrum posters.
Both are testaments to the achievements of science, and look really neat.
There's also the Universal Heritage and Solar System Chart, although neither look as arty. -

Where can I get Gareth's Cookie Cop / Dirty Bertie / any other obscure novelty products featured in The Office?
We don't know, sorry. These things must have come from somewhere... though if you desperately want one it could be that you missed the entire point of the show. -

A microscopeAbout 50 years ago, as a child, I had a little microscope which produced hours of interesting fun. Of course these days you can't do anything without a computer somewhere in the loop. So I'd suggest one of these:-

or one of these

Re:Fanbois, have you actually tried one?
$69 for a keyboard isn't particularly expensive. True, keyboards around that price usually have whiz-bang features, but not always.
G11 Gaming Keyboard - $69 (And while I like the feel of it for gaming, it sucks to do real work on!)
Das Keyboard II - $79.99
For an outfit as small as Unicomp seems to be, a somewhat minor markup over what it'd cost from somebody else is pretty reasonable. -

since when I put it in my pants, it tends ruin your pace
I don't think I want to know what kind of game you have that requires you to put the wiimote in your pants. Heck, this one is bad enough
:pAnd just why should a wiimote in your pants ruin my pace, anyway? I don't even know you...

Re:Nokia E70
Nokia shipped E90 , actual Symbian S60 running Laptop phone (I can easily say).
http://europe.nokia.com/e90
BTW, a device upgrade doesn't mean they don't give a heck to older product. Especially Symbian devices keep on getting supported/ software updated. Even my 9300 works very fine except the fact that it runs a rare Symbian version (S80) so third party is a bit problematic.
As a side note, every Symbian device made recently (not sure about year) supports Bluetooth keyboards. There are some very nice bluetooth keyboards which are very small. E.g. Logitech stuff. Another option is to use the sci-fi http://www.thinkgeek.com/computing/input/8193/ laser keyboard.
Also if iPhone user friends talk too much, you just use the keyboard asking them how many jailbreak hacks they need for it. Good iPhone muter as bonus ;) -
Re:First Hater Alert
Because Steve Jobs wanted so. It is the iPhone for you.
As an Apple user, I am totally clueless why people actually even care about iPhone if they want a real smart phone.
I am sure someone can horribly hack the iPhone and switch on whatever they disabled on software but why bother?
It also means they can't get the laser keyboard thing http://www.thinkgeek.com/computing/input/8193/ -
Re:First Hater AlertNot having used one much, let me ask how, exactly, you are supposed to deal with 'keys' that are substantially smaller than a fingertip and have no tactile feedback to boot? Everyone I know who uses one still has trouble getting it to input the letter they want. Or the lazy mans way: http://www.thinkgeek.com/computing/input/8193/

Re:Wait, what?

Pii Pii Bros -
Re:Wait, what?
..so we're reduced to this, now? *puts bag over head in shame* No wonder the aliens won't openly visit us!
If the real thing bothers you, would a little simulated pii-pii action bother you? (real product from Japan sold in thinkgeek, must see!) -
Who thought of it first?
Think Geek had something similar (but much more sanitary) for April Fools Day this year: http://www.thinkgeek.com/stuff/41/superpiipii.html?cpg=70T I think I would perfer their version.

Re:You don't say?
There's a happy medium to be found in computer peripherals.
I use the Das Keyboard II. (I used to use an IBM Model M I got from an old PS/1, but I missed the Windows key.) $80 isn't cheap, but it's a dream to type on, and built like a tank. All the keys make happy click-click-click! noises, too. (But then again, I am a computer science major. I spend a lot of time on this thing.)
I've also been really happy with the Logitech G5 mouse. The weights are mostly gimmicky, but were handy for the one I got for my parent's computer - my mother-dearest can pop them out and use a lighter mouse. (She now refuses to work on any other computer, because the mouse is different.) It's really comfortable and tracks well, but it only has one side button, which bugs me somewhat.
(No, I don't work for either company. But, if you are a Logitech employee and would like to send me a check, I have a PayPal account!)

Re:Caps Lock! Oh No!

You bought the wrong keyboard then. Get yourself one fo these and never worry about it anymore. QWERTY, Dvorak, Gamer, who knows? Poke at a couple of keys and find out what's mapped where! -
Re:Be careful how you create your titles, soulskilOh, man, reading that page... you just can't make this shit up: I WILL CONTROL MY OWN DESTINY
In todayâ(TM)s world, maintaining self-confidence involves the need for self-protection. For independent, self-reliant women, the TASER® C2 is an effective personal protection device that fits any lifestyle. Ok, that I can go with... but "fits any lifestyle"? Hmm... Next slide: THERE WHEN I CAN'T BE
The commitment to protect the family, is more than something rational. It is innate. What is rational is taking steps to reconcile the instinct to protect, to always be there when needed. This seems to be advocating giving tasers to friends and family. Still not too bad... FASHION WITH A BITE
Let innovative design, unparalleled performance, and breakthrough style help you make a statement. Who says safety can't be stylish? Ok, WTF. What does it say about our society that we have designer fucking tasers? TASER MPH HOLSTER
mixing music with security
Play your favorite songs while on the go, with this combination TASER® C2 Holster and easy-to-use music player. The 1 GB TASER MPH Holster offers you both security and music while on the go. Yes... we are talking about a combination. Taser. And. MP3. Player.
Really, we can't be far off from this kind of stuff. (For those who don't know, that was one of their April Fools products.) -

Re:Phone?
A simpler solution would be hardware keylogger, like this.

Re:Anonymous Coward
What protection does that afford against a physical keylogger?
Not all keyloggers are software. -
Re::-D
As a software developer and Linux geek, I can say that probably everyone on Slashdot can identify in some way or another.
Specifically, reminds me of this shirt -- of course, I fix their computer anyway, but I'm always tempted... -
Re:Confront him outright
Oh hell no. Before you leave you make that guy's life hell.
http://www.thinkgeek.com/gadgets/electronic/8c52/ is a good start, get 3 of them and get them in his office and car. always remove his favorite section out of his newspaper before he get's it. actually cut stuff out and carefully refold it. Get random with the strange and highly annoying things you do so you dont get caught. Be paranoid as you do things as he will try to figure it out.
get a small learning ir remote and keep turning off the projector on his presentations, this one drives them INSANE.
Get a recorder and record his more stupid remarks and then turn them into mp3's and then email them all over the company, your customers are a good choice for this as well. use a throw away email account outside the company and time it right... be quiet about it and act "shocked" when everyone else does.
If you do it right, nobody will know it's you and it will drive the moron completely insane. It will make the 2 months you are there until you find a new job more enjoyable.
Subversive, that is the key. -
