Re:IPv6 Needs a Killer App
Unfortunately for IPv6, Skype works fine with IPv4+NAT.
ThreeDegrees requires IPv6, but it never really caught on. Maybe it would have had better luck if MS created a fake startup shell company to promote it, so then people would think it was some kind of revolution in the making instead of yet another tool of The Man's oppression. -
Re:Bah
> Because despite the rhetoric, Microsoft can't innovate. They can only copy. Hey! They made MS Bob
...seriously though, Three Degrees is about the only MS app I know that actually contains new ideas. -
Playing catch upI like it only for the simple reason that the website I co-Admin is ranked 2nd. And not only that, the site is listed serveral times on the first page. In Google, the first appearance doesn't show up until the 5th page. (Search term: Mazda6) But that would probably be the only reason why I like it.
Out of curiousity I also decided to check out MSN's Sandbox. This is pretty much their upcoming software and features. I was surprised to find pretty much everything they are listing has already been inplemented by Google. Time to play catch up!
NewsBot = news.google.com
MSN Toolbar = Google Toolbar
3 = I'm thinking this is just like Orkut, 3 is software that connects a small group of family and close friends, people who know and trust one another, so they can do fun things together in a whole new way. 3 is a beta test of an innovative application that lets users connect online, extending real-world social interactions.
NetScan = This is Google Groups.. searches USENET newsgroupsThe only "original" item on there was TerraServer and that has been up and running for some time now.
I would be interested to see if MS decides to add much of the same features that Google has. Such as phone number searches, unit conversions, etc...Some things that make Google really unique. Perhaps MS could tie the search term, such as an address, to TerraServer will allow a person to get a direct overhead view of that place. However... They need to get some more updated maps to make this useful.

Re:Apple intruding on MS's territory?
Wouldn't this be a more direct competitor? (Note the Microsoft Corp Copyright on the page...)

Re:I don't care what you say
voicepulse.com also does it. Hell, *I* provide VoIP SIP termination. It's not that difficult.
NAT is the bane of getting stuff like this working and operational. Just because we've found a way to work around NAT doesn't mean it's easy, or desirable. And only one side can be behind a NAT. If you try to make both behind a NAT, it breaks horribly. I've tried it.
NAT is an abomination, and needs to go away. NAT isn't security, NAT isn't firewalling, and NAT certainly breaks more things than it fixes. Thousands of innovative applications don't work because there's too much of an installed base of NAT machines. Microsoft is developing an application that installs an IPv6 stack on your machine, provides a tunnel to the IPv6 network through Microsoft technology called Teredo, so that peer to peer stuff will work right again. The fact the largest software company in the world has to go to these lengths says something. -
Re:I'm so pissed off with MSIf you are not using MSN Messenger, the simplest solution is not to turn it on:
1 Open MSN Messenger
2 Click on Tools>Options
3 Click on General
4 Uncheck "Automatically run Messenger when I log onto Windows"
5 Uncheck "Open Messenger main window when Messenger starts"
6 Uncheck "Allow automatic sign on when connected to the Internet"Programs like Microsoft's XP and broadband only P2P networking client threedegrees will need MSN Messenger services.
bruceb consulting has a solution which should anchor your status bar in all instances of Internet Explorer and Windows Explorer:
1. Open just one window of Internet Explorer.
2. Click the "View" menu, then "Status Bar."
3. Hold down Ctrl while clicking the X to close the window.
4. Open My Computer.
5. Click the "View" menu, then "Status Bar."
6. Click the "Tools" menu, then "Folder Options."
7. Click the "View" tab.
8. Click "Apply to all folders."
9. Click "OK."
10. Close Windows Explorer.bruceb consulting also offers a reminder to XP home users that the backup program for XP Pro can be installed from the VALUEADD folder on their XP Home installation (or "restore") disk.

Re:What Happened
-
What HappenedThis is related to threedegrees, a Microsoft software. I tracked it down 3 months ago and detailed the process on their message board that can be reached here:
http://www.threedegrees.com/MessageBoards/ShowPost .aspx?PostID=427What is going on is that Symantec's AntiVirus software is clashing with Microsoft's attempt to update some critical files, and when only half of the files are updated and the other half is denied, the result is a broken machine.
The fault can't entirely be blamed on Microsoft in this case.

Microsoft's secret plan to deploy IPv6
Teenagers. It's all about teenagers.
You see, when the kids install ThreeDegrees, Microsoft automatically enables IPv6. Isn't it insidious? If this is allowed to continue, we'll have millions of IPv6 machines before you know it! :-) -
Re:Im just waiting...
Microsoft already have, its called 3 Degrees and its a piece of trash. heres a link if you want to try it

Three Degrees
Actually... according to Microsoft's new, in development p2p IM thing... there are only 3 Degrees of separation , not 6.
But of course, are they really degrees of separation? Wouldn't six degrees of connection or something make more sense? -
There ... not quite there
What makes IM and e-mail so useful? The ability to do other things with your computer while chatting. With it's "robust graphical enviroment" I don't see how you could surf the web and talk at the same time.
Sadly, I think microsoft has the right idea with their next generation IM.
Another draw back of this is it seems to be a huge marketing focus group that you pay to be in. I hope the dot com bust has taught us one thing. People are adverse to experiances that are centered on marketing.
The only way this thing ever works is if they create a "light" client that is like regular IM so you could still chat with your friends and work.
