I just recently upgraded to X2 4400+ running Win XP SP2 and 2GB dual channel ram. OS is running off a 15k RPM drive, and storage is on 3 x 250GB 16mb cache drives. The motherboard is A8N32-SLI. Video card is eVGA nvidia 7800GT.
I can't run Windows for more than 24 hours before Outlook takes a hold of one of the CPU's. ending outlook process makes the system pick another process, usually explorer.exe, to take 50% of total CPU (or one whole processor). Shortly after, the entire system freezes.
Seems like AMD has a problem as well. So it could be a Windows issue with dual core processors.
I also applied the "windows dual core hot fix" (google that), and set the registry setting from the KB article to 1, which didn't fix it, so I set it to 0, and that didn't fix it either. So, my system is stable for ~24 hours then kaput.
Odd. I've never really used slashdot's membership features, but I wanted to send a direct message to you. couldn't figure out how. Can you contact me instead? wayne [dot] chang [at] i2hub.com. Wanted to know more about your company and possible business relations..
When I headed the forums at Napster, Inc (the first generation with Shawn Fanning), disruptive users were a constant.
Without moderation, the forums would quickly fill up with junk. It took a full-time staff to moderate the forums to guarentee a certain level of quality.
My specialty is to build communities, and one of the key points is to outline who you want in the community and who you don't want. It seemed obvious that the ones you want are the athletes -- so your boundaries are to exclude all the ones that don't fit your desired community profile. In this case, you have a few options.
1) Dedicate a lot of time to weed out the offensive material/users
2) Let it continue on and hope it will flame itself out
3) Make the community more exclusive (heavier barriers of entry -- more personal information, etc. This would allow users who want to re-register to jump through a lot of hoops each time.)
It seems like #2 was tried, and it seems like you don't have time for #1, so the solution would be #3 with as much #1 as possible.

I looked up Brand Marketers, and there is no such company in San Francisco.
Is this true? What about personal projects done in the dorm? All essays and papers are property of the university (or atleast more than 0%)? Can someone shed more light on this?
How it is obvious why Half Life 2 was delayed. They recently just found out about the network intrusion and they are doing a risk and damage analysis. It makes perfect sense to delay the release until it is known what exactly was taken/damaged. They don't want to ship a game with embedded trojans in it. You don't want to play a game from a company that was recently hacked. I'm surprised they didn't come clean before the code hit the net.
This is from the creators of Sobig. They are trying to get as many venues to send spam as possible. Once the login/password + smtp info is gathered, it is sent to them and they now have a massive list of credentials to bombard the rest of the world with.
haha. mod parent up. article is about how google doesn't read your mind when you search for a common word. this sets up microsoft's new search engine as superior in that it can read your mind. so when i search apple on their new search engine, it will know that i want apples that grow in massachusetts. and if i type it again, it should know that i want information about rotten apples on halloween. and then if i type it again, it should throw me a link to apple computers. the next generation in search engine technology -- mind readers.

Yeah. One of them is Jordan Ritter who is also a co-founder. He actually did all the backend server stuff. He's now over at Cloudmark doing the SpamNet thing, which is pretty big.
And yes, I did some stuff for Napster.
Jordan rules by the way.
The RO server is 31MB. I know this because I know someone that got into their system using the SQL exploit (this was a month before Slammer used the same technique). He retrieved the actual server software and released this on the net so that anyone could emulate the server (if you had 1GB+ ram). He has done a lot to the RO folks, and I wouldn't be surprised if it was him that did it.
I'm actually doing the same thing as you. I'm not a big fan of programming, so I don't know why you would want to do that. I would suggest studying finance as an alternative and not trying to make the switch over. Programmers are a dime a dozen;)
That sounds pretty interesting. Typically any software that deals with movies tend to reduce quality or at most keep it the same. Is this the first time software can actually be made to dramatically increase the quality of a movie, even if the source sucks?
When do we get the localized versions where each country plays as a member of that country..the americans can play as americans only and japanese can play as japanese, and when they fight, it's with real valor and honor?
Is it racism or discrimination, or all three if I'm playing Battlefield 1942 online and I'm playing as the Japanese since I live in the Japan, and playing on an American server and all the Americans are, naturally, Americans? Is it betrayal and dishonor if I play as an American fighting the Japanese?
Instead of sitting next to Big Bob that's snoring with his next on your shoulder and the bathroom right behind you where you can hear flushing and people doing their thing for the duration of the flight, we can now replicate that experience at home with Microsoft technology..
Anonymous Coward,
You're a genius. Disabling nView fixed it (it's been 24 hours so far and running great).

My cell phone number is (XXX) U-OWE-HIM.
I won't give out the area code of course. But it is the area code for a major city.
Should I sell it? Seems like a quick way to get the extra cash.
Whatcha think slashdotians?

Check out here for screenshots.
Before, it was just the blueprints that got released. Now the whole house with wallpapers and furnishings as well was released.
I did a exe size comparison and guess what? They match the sizes you get from compiling from the source.
Feel free to mod me up as I'm sure you all will ;)

Does this bible also make the prediction that something huge will happen at the end of the millennium?
This sounds like Ender's Worm. Very interesting read.
Wow, seems like Apple wants to top IBM's 558 blade servers with 970 PowerMacs...
