Re:Have you ever met anyone...
Elongated bowls don't bang male-parts when you scoot forward a bit. They're seen as a luxury option for this purpose, but only by men, and not necessarily by all men. It's also easier to pee standing up.
Good point on the round toilet fluid dynamics.
The limits of our fluid dynamics technology (and fluid dynamics in general--there's only so much energy in a gallon of water that's not elevated 6 feet above the bowl) remain close to 20 years ago; the general understanding of and ability to manufacture to tolerances required for good fluid dynamics has spread, so cheaper toilets have improved faster than upper-end toilets. Until they start coating them with low-friction ceramics, this will remain true.
There are $50 toilets at Home Depot sometimes, when they're woefully overstocked. Typically, you can get a good (but not top-end) Toto around $200-$250 off Amazon; their MSRP is like $450. You can get the $600-$800 models for like $450. I like the highest-end models because they have smooth sides instead of the ridiculous crevices and pipe designs: a trapezoidal monolyth is a flat surface to wipe down, rather than a bunch of nooks and crannies to dig at with a pick brush for 40 minutes. Being able to not have my toilet covered in dust and yellow film without spending an hour every weekend cleaning it is worth the $450. Meanwhile, your generic toilet does typically cost over $100 if you don't catch some extreme overstock clearance bullshit, so yeah... the $200 thing is actually priced competitively.
So here's a $989 toilet at $600 on Amazon. If you're buying a $1,000 toilet, you should expect that I guess. You can see what I mean about the sides, though. Flat sides like that have become somewhat popular, versus this kind of shit that's impossible to clean. You're getting a vanilla top-down flush if you're not paying a few hundred, though; that Toto "Tornado Flush" has a steep price tag. As I said: I'm willing to pay in the upper end for something that's going to outlast the bathroom itself.
Good points, though.

already something for toilet bowls
Toto has http://www.totousa.com/people-first-innovation/peopleplanetwater/cefiontect that's been an optional upgrade for more than 10 years. Toilets with that really do require less frequent cleaning.

Re:Ad absurdium
Toilet paper consumption is not trivial. Soft paper requires cutting down trees. A bidet will do a better job, save you money, and keep those trees soaking up carbon dioxide. If the same substance were on your countertop, would you just wipe it with paper?
Plus, if you're a gadget person, you'll be impressed.

Re:Advertising: Out of control
Is it? I wouldn't know, since I haven't listened to the radio since I got my first iPod three years ago.
I agree! I hate advertising. That's why my Apple iPod is great! I find it especially useful when I use it with Apple iTunes to download all that great music by Kanye West.

Re:Those low flush toilets
Got a Toto Ultimate three years ago after doing real research and not just blindly trusting the sales guy because I have been burned buying a toilet for the first house. Worked out to about $172USD (I live in Canada) including a full replacement kit for the handle, chain and rubber inner flange. I only bought the additional kit because I was concerned it might be hard to get support for my made in the US by a Japanese company toilet up here but have not needed it. A five year warranty and never a clog (knock on wood) yet. Since then I have suggested them to many others. A family of five (only one toilet) has been using theirs for two years with no clogs either.

(1) For Palm, (2) GOOD U.I. (3) FlushingI'm a fan of remotes, so I can tell you:
1.) I've been using Omniremote on my Palm Pilot for years. The nifty thing is that once you buy the remote, an SDK is freely available, so can write your own plam software that controls device. The downside is that the range is short unless you buy an IR booster. You do NOT want to have this as your only remote, because, without dedicated buttons, it is impossible to use in the dark, without looking at it, and the backlight is tedious to turn on.
2.) The remote with the best U.I. that I have found is the Harmony Remote. It is very MS-Windows centric, but you can just give it model numbers and it downloads via USB the commands into stand-alone remote with a truly terrific interface. It understands like commands like "Watch DVDs" require commands to multiple devices. It has enough smarts to keep track of the state of all the relevant devices. It has a convenient interface is someone happens to walk in front of a device at the wrong time. If you are buying just one remote, this is the one to buy. Most of the operations are on a clickable thumbwheel with an automaticly backlit display, but it has just enough well chosen, well shaped buttons, that it is a joy to use.
3.) Although not stand-alone, I use a ZephIR on the USB of my Mac. Although it doesn't have the great interface of the harmony remote, and it also has a convenient web based database of equipment models. And like the harmony remote, you can upload the definitions of your own equipment. I uploaded the controls for my Toto Zoe Bidet, to the ZephIR, and I can definately control the the spritz on my lap bottom from my Mac laptop.
None of these remotes will let me bring up a TV schedule on a web page, then click in a show's box to queue it for programming into a VCR. Ideally, it should manage multiple VCRs, each with its own native time recording interface, and look for alternate viewing times to get everything I selected on some tape. -
Stream of "Refreshing Water" where ever you go!...and for those that are away from their Toto toilet and "don't want to do without", you can get THIS wonderful gadget that will ensure you get that stream of "refreshing water", "Perfect for that person on the go!", "You just won't want to do without!!!"
OMG, thank you Toto for reminding how low my sense of humor can be late at night... I'm still laughing at the "Leave it to Beaver" music playing throughout the video (Windows, QuickTime, Real)

Another great product
Forgot to mention...I also highly recommend the toilet paper holders! If you always put the toilet paper on top of the holder because you are too lazy to put in on the rod, you will appreciate as much as me "One-hand toilet tissue loading and unloading".
I'm glad this story came up because I found local dealers near my parents in the USA. I'm going to be the favorite sun again :) Lost it when my brother bought my mom a PDA. -
