Re:"fracking"
there's a few documentaries out there to raise awareness already, but they seem to gather very little attention.
Gasland is already under question for many of its "facts". Instead of documentaries we could look at studies by the EPA that say there is no impact. Of course, that study was questioned by a whistleblower, so maybe it isn't reliable either.
In short, I've read at least 50 comments in this thread stating with great certainty that ground water pollution is occurring from fracking, TFA says earthquakes are likely caused by fracking, yet there aren't any studies to support any claims for or against those statements. How 'bout we all wait for the EPA lifecycle study to do its thing and then we can have an informed discussion instead of a

Re:So what was he *really* standing in front of?
If you don't draw the line at "no photo alterations, even if they're just cosmetic", where do you draw it?
Generally I agree, but this amounts to a portrait. It's not a "news" or "editorial" photo, it's more of a "publicity" photo. And those are *always* altered and *always* run by news organizations anyway. For example, this is Newsday - you think that photo of Bush came out of the camera looking exactly like that? No, it's been retouched like all portraits have - not so obviously, but still, it's not "unaltered". The wrinkles have been softened, blemishes edited out, etc.
The only difference here is that this general didn't get up and formally pose in front of a background, somebody made it for her afterwards. Maybe she didn't have time - she's a general in wartime, after all.

pictures, todayI was curious what it looked like today in anything other than an orbital photograph
A photo gallery of Lituya Bay today it's a part of Glacier Bay National Park I'm awestruck by how beautiful GBNP is.
A wikimapia of Lituya Bay and a photo gallery from a local tour company, I'd love to go there one day.

or so a CW channel 33 intern says
That's what the story by a Dallas channel 33, News at Nine Intern says, but that's not what the law says.
IANAL, but reading the law, I see that it is directed at Computer Security and Computer Forensics professionals, not the type of stuff the Geek Squad does. From the law: "review and analysis of, and the investigation into the content of, computer-based data" and "including forensic analysis, burglar alarm system engineering, and necessary data collection." It is about gathering evidence for criminal prosecution.
The certification of computing professionals is not a new idea. There is already an organization that does it. The Institute for the Certification of Computer Professionals http://www.iccp.org/ has been doing it for decades. This certification was recomended by the DPMA (Data Processors Management Association) back in the 70's. The DPMA is now known as the Association of Information Technology Professionals http://www.aitp.org/.

Re:Digital TV sucks
I have this problem with KTLA 5 sometimes and I live less than 20 miles from the transmitters on the mountains. Once in a while, my signals go very low or sometimes can't be lockable. My analog isn't too bad (still watchable with dots). Digital would result nothing, pixels, blocks, You can see the details in my long newsgroup thread.

Re:Bus Report
Is that a surprise? The most desirable areas of real estate are on the coast, epecially hills, dockland areas and beach fronts (See Dodgers Stadium, Kelo vs. City of New London, London Docklands etc...)
The effects of hurricane Katrina will give property developers and city officials the excuse to invoke the urban blight and eminent domain legislation and reclaim the land for more profitable purposes. The main barrier to the regeneration of deprived areas is always street crime. Now, with the all the civilians out of the way, they can use whatever force is necessary. -
Beauty and the Geek!
Is anyone watching this funny reality TV show? The second episode was aired last night on KTLA 5 (Los Angeles, CA, USA). The guys had to do massage stuff while the gals had to fine tune sport cars.
I don't see how geeks and nerds can be better lovers from that show especially with Richard. ;) -
Re:Representatives of the People, IndeedThe P2P developers need gun lobbyists on their side! Since when was a gun developed that took "reasonable care" in preventing accidental death? The gun should be able to detect human presence and not fire a round! Yeah, it might cost a lot of money and time to develop that feature but we have to make sure that people don't use it the wrong way!
Since a long time actually. Practically all guns have safeties on them for these purposes, including a manual exterior safety, interior firing-pin block safety (in cases of drops), even grip safeties and trigger safeties. California should always be viewed as an exception to any reasonable rule when it comes to this kind of thing because in fact, manufacturers of firearms are not allowed to import into California any firearm that doesn't meet their strigent requirements of being "safe". The manufacturers also have to pay the California government to run safety tests and go through an approval process before any gun can be imported there for sale. They actually have a list by make and model and if your gun isn't on their list (which changes frequently) your gun is illegal there.
So to me, it is not really surprising that the first state to try and enact such ridiculous legislation would be California. Look at all of the interesting stuff they came up with for this year. California seems to take on the attitude "If it can hurt a kid or movie revenues then it should be illegal."

No witty banter?!?!
Maybe political speeches will become shorter, or the eleven o'clock news will last only 5 minutes, the witty banter between news anchors edited out.
I don't know about everyone else, but I only watch the news on television because of the hot anchor eye candy. Take that away and TV news has no advantage over reading news on the web at all.

Re:Urban Myth!
First thing's first. The MythBusters program is meant mainly for entertainment purposes. On many occasions both Jamie and Adam (the hosts) state their position towards a topic, which usually is 'we aren't experts.' The MythBusters are neither a scientific institute nor a regulated body for research of such matters. Take their findings to heart when it comes to things like ice bullets or the physics of firing a chicken out of a cannon. When it comes to your own personal safety, do some research for yourself and use common sense. Personally, I would never talk on a cell phone at a gas station (it seems a little rude), but it is with me at all times.
WGN, a Chicago television station, quoted David Sykuta of the Illinois Petroleum Council as saying, "The truth is there has never been an explosion at a gas station from a cell phone." (link) In addition, Wired put out an article of a similar nature quoting Robert Renkes, a spokesperson for the Petroleum Equipment Institute, as saying "We have not found a cell phone responsible for any fire since the beginning of mankind." (link)
If you want more information on from the Petroleum Equipment Institute you can visit their site and find other articles about cell phones and other ESD information. -
Dear DirecTV
Dear DirecTV,
Please take note. This is how you deal with people pirating your signals without being viewed as jackbooted thugs. You find people buying and selling equipment designed specifically to do that.
Contrast this to your current methods which involve extorting protection money out of people who do NOT pirate your signals simply because they bought a programmable smart card with a wide range of possible uses, one of which *might* lead to the pirating of your signals.

Re:OK, here's a question for mister weatherman...It basically can mean aerial coverage of precipitation... at any point in time during the forecast period, it will be snowing in 30% of the forecast area.
Source? Tom Skilling, of course.

Re:But the advertisers...
I submit the following:
The Pitts
The Mullets
Need I keep digging to prove my point? OK. So I haven't seen any shows of "The Mullets" yet, but, do you half to? As for The Pits... I'd *LOVE* to know who got blown to get that show on the air...
For those that are still with me and wondering where I'm going... I'm stating that there is already an abundance of CRAP on TV -- even before the ability to skip past commercials is commonplace (I mean, come on, ho wmany people really skip commercials, or even have the ability to, outside of slashdot?) Right now the networks are just blowing smoke up our asses to have yet more technology taken away from us. Nothing more.
anyway.. back to work... -
In-depth coverage in LA times articleThat story was the AP breaking-news version. There's much more detail in the LA times version, which discusses the litigation in more depth. Particularly notable (money, money, money
...):Lawyers for another defendant, Streamcast Networks Inc., which launched the Morpheus file-sharing network, voiced a similar complaint. Morpheus' main law firm, Palo Alto-based Wilson Sonsini Goodrich & Rosati, told the court it intends to withdraw from the case because Streamcast can't afford to pay the bills.
...Legal fees are running high in the case not only because it's extremely important to some of the world's largest media companies but also because it involves several of California's biggest law firms.
