Somebody will see the advantages.
It might be your values that keep you against air bursting to get a 10,000 ton space ship from the ground to Mars in a couple of weeks, but other countries will, and they will dominate the west by learning how to do something we are too big of pussies to do.
I've predicted this a long time ago:
http://www.treatyist.com/issue1/everyonegetsthebomb.aspx
The ultimate point is that even if you believed that nonproliferation could work, and it can't, even the genuinely peaceful uses of nuclear technology will bestow adopting nations tremendous advantages.
We're just being stupid by not adopting this technology first.

C# Can Be Faster than C++
It doesn't take a rocket scientist to work out that a GC-based, VM-based language that has layers of intermediate execution is going to be slower than is required for a trading system
I don't think that's necessarily has to be the case. I've been doing some benchmarking and disassembly and frankly, yes, if you use C++ native arrays, rather than STL, then C++ will be faster. But, if you go down the path of STL, then C++ is going to be -significantly slower-.
I have some benchmarks and dissembly comparisons here:
http://www.treatyist.com/issue1/cpp_vs_csharp_arrays.aspx
If there is a hole in how Microsoft did things, it is most likely that the consulting group they partnered with is a bunch of retards. Having a Gold membership or whatever their solution program is absolutely no guarantee that anyone works for them is remotely competent. From that we ask, what could have Accenture screwed up?
Well, they could have blindly followed a Gang O' Four Pattern but with giant XML SOAP blobs flying all over the place. They could have forgotten that SQL Server is kind of a shitty database for doing high volumes of transactions with simultaneous reporting unless you use MVCC. They might not have even known what MVCC is. They could have used BizTalk or something really stupid like that, or, maybe in the middle of it they thought they'd get their smarts on and write their own socket server for whatever reason and unwittingly rewrote a single threaded apache 1.0 because they didn't know what they are doing. We don't know.
Bottom line is, its not the language, but the architecture that matters most, in any design. The thing about Linux is, that, the out of the box LAMP stack is a surprisingly robust pattern to cookie cutter all over the place and is fairly flexible, and in any case Linux teams tend to have more real CS people who know what the hell they are doing. I would be willing to bet that if you took the winning Linux team, and said, they had to write it in Mono, they would still have come up with a solution that was pretty good.

My advertisement for conservatives
Dear Conservative,
President Obama and his gang of socialist cronies, are not only trying to loot health care, loot your energy bill, take away your guns, turn you away from god, break up your family and destroy your cultural heritage, now they are going to spy on you to do it. The vast spy apparatus run by the Federal Government has its eye firmly cast on you as liberal scientists work to develop insects that can be controlled by computer and made to either watch or attack you. This isn't made up stuff. They even brag about it with a press release.

Fellow conservatives, you have to be informed to avoid being shackled by the chains of Obama's socialism and enslaved by his Chicago liberal crooks and cronies. Just the other day, President Obama's top school guy admitted telling school age little boys not to report getting raped by sexual criminals. Re:So can we post your home address?
Perhaps you should look into it, instead of reaching for dogma like "self-evident."
You mean, like Thomas Jefferson did?
I put it all into context. Today's conservatives and liberals both have it wrong. The people give government limited powers, not the other way around.
http://www.treatyist.com/issue1/onjudicialactivism.aspx
You may not like most of it, but I think every reasonable person who is familiar with American Constitutional History should agree with this:
"The Constitution does not give the Congress the right to regulate guns, the Congress has no right to do so, regardless of whether there is a 2nd amendment or not. Nor does the Congress have the right to regulate speech, or religion, because there is no power granted to it by the Constitution. And, because the Constitution does not give the Congress the right to regulate the environment, the Congress has no right do do so. Since the Constitution does not give the Congress the right to regulate employment, education or any of many other things, it cannot. Conservatives, take note: The Constitution does not give the government the right to regulate marriage, either. The most constitutional opinion that there is, the one that correctly recognizes the Constitution for the treaty that is, is the one that holds that the citizens can have guns, be gay and be married, build whatever factory they want - within the confines of their state, can possess any item and say anything. That is freedom for the people."

That worked pretty good with Hitler...
I know it's been a long time since America has engaged in it, but it's called diplomacy, not recon
Yeah, how many decades of failed diplomacy with North Korea or Iran do you possibly need? I would say that at some point, when someone says they are going to blow you away, and that their God will destroy you, you just have to take them at face value.
With that said....
Frankly, I don't even think South Korea is worth America's defense. But, if you want to put American cities on the nuclear table to protect the independence of South Korea, thanks to the efforts of W, we are now closing in on technologies needed to intercept their missiles. I've even written about that previously Here.. And, from a conventional standpoint, North Korea has the economy of Vermont, in this little mashup here It's their northern ally, China, that is the problem.

Republican bitching about GM is a total fraud.
Republican bitching about GM is a total fraud.I keep hearing so-called conservatives moan about GM and the how the government shouldn't have bailed them out. They talk up the free market as if they believe in it and the truth is, they don't. The very same conservative movement that rips the northern based GM has absolutely no problem lining up to the government dole when it comes to protectionism for American food products and subsidies for American farmers. Jeff Sessions, Republican, publicly ripped GM so much, and defended Honda and Toyota so much, that, I went and made a Japanese style state flag for his home state of Alabama....:
http://www.treatyist.com/issue1/alabamasnewflag.aspx
Pretty much, Republicans have movie stars doing "Got Milk" advertisement, "Beef, its what's for dinner...".. like, the USA needs to have the government advertising fucking food. Every year American farmers get the same out of amount money that GM gets, in either direct subsidies or benefits from protectionism, and THAT, of course, based on most conservatives that I talked too, is somehow "different."
Moral of the story is this, Republicans have no credibility on balanced budgets, no credibility on economic national security, and no credibility on nationalism in general. If the GOP wants to regain its self respect, then red states must balance their budgets, and get off the federal dole themselves.

Re:Dude, the bill doubled in a decade.
Taken together that's over half the state costs right there. So if a typical family of 2 parents with 3 children moves to your state, the state gains the revenue of 2 additional tax payers, but incurs the cost of 3 more kids to educate.
That's interesting speculation, but there's no facts to support that. All you have is defensive rationalization... "well maybe there's some theory that I can use to explain an increase spending.. but no facts."
Suck it up, pay your fair share or move to the libertarian paradise of Somalia.
How about liberals pay their fair share, before raising my taxes?
I proposed a tax on intellectual property...
If you want to suck it up, why don't we start with IP holders. Every copyright holder, book publisher, everyone, should pay a property tax on that IP, or it goes up for public auction.
-
Re:Wishful Thinking
You've got to be kidding. Was that just a gut feeling? Have you ever heard a Republican say anything of the sort?
There are those of us Republicans, and we are certainly a minority, for sure, that think we need to go beyond the Reagan revolution and define policy in terms of our values as relevant towards today, and not just have policy for the sake of being like it was 1980.
Politically, the immediate problem is bringing Reagan Democrats back and the answer to me is to move to the center on trade and drop the hostility to unions. But, another issue that comes up is IP.
Actually a lot of Republicans I've talked to tend to see things more my way. In the very least, the idea of either taxing IP or deregulating it to screw liberals has some appeal. I got a good chunk of hits from the old freeper when I posted an essay advocating that intellectual property be taxed to balance the economy away from liberal industries and also pay for liberal spending programs. http://www.treatyist.com/issue1/taxingliberalsfairly.aspx Check it out if you like...

Re:Not necessarily so.
Well, the question is, does the increased fuel efficiency actually pay for itself? The thing is, the more efficient you are, the more complex you are. The more complex you are, the more you cost. This relationship between efficiency and cost is exponential due to increased complexity efficiency demands. I put together a simple JavaScript model of this at http://www.treatyist.com/issue1/savetheearth.aspx . Basically, by jiggering the predicted cost of fuel (using gasoline as a baseline), versus, the exponent of increased energy efficiency costs, you can arrive at a number of scenarios where reducing greenhouse gasses actually doesn't pay for itself.
Good, a skeptic who looked at the numbers.
Most of what I know about global warming is what I read in Science magazine, in the news roundups and the editorials. As I recall, they said that some models, on the 5% shoulder of the probability curve, give a 10-meter rise in sea level by 2100. You can't dismiss the unlikely occurrences; you have to account for their likelihood and consequences in your cost/benefit calculations.
In your model, what is the economic cost of a 10-meter rise in sea level?
-
Not necessarily so.
There are many reasons to migrate from fossil fuels, the most compelling being that they're going to run out very soon. The changing climate is also a worry (which we wouldn't want to encourage to change faster than it already is), but it's not the only reason, and the money spent on migrating to alternative energy sources certainly wouldn't be wasted.

If it pays anyone, it also pays the Chinese and the Europeans..
In any case, most models show that even a rather dramatic altering of CO2 emissions will not alter the course of climate change for a minimum of 200 years. Even if we stopped now, the glaciers are still going to melt. The CO2 is already in the air.

Re:Rationalizations.
Oh, so it's you against them and the only reason you care about is what will further your struggle. Well, when you get done tilting at windmills, start looking around.
This opinion of yours doesn't change the fact that I'm right.
Because you don't need a car to live where you do need food.
People need manufactured goods to live just as much as they need food. Do you know how to make steel, or even iron, to make a plow with? Or, how do you make so much as even a carved stick without tools.
And now your lumping tarriffs in with subsidies and the farm program. They aren't the same
They are entirely the same. The farm program is a subsidy. It's a trade restraining redistribution of wealth.
Wow, almost two centuries and you think it is wrong.
Well yes. Because, for most of that time, the North sought and got protectionism for manufactured goods, and turned the USA into a superpower. Just look at the difference between protectionist North in the civil war vs free trading South.
http://www.treatyist.com/issue1/protectionismcivilwar.aspx
PS. The South lost.
Yep.. But there should be very little free trade when dealing with food. There is no reason for demand to drive the price out of the reach of the poorer citizens. You may think otherwise but you are completely wrong.
Um, if there was free trade with food, it would be cheaper, just as free trade makes manufactured goods cheaper.
SO now it's the fat people. Ok, I'm starting to get some insight into how your mind works. I don't believe you are right but now I see
Uh, boy, that's a way to twist an example around. There are fat people because there are plenty of food to eat. My point is, if protectionism works so well with food, why not do it with manufactured goods?

Are you really that much of a zealot?
What are you talking about, wrt W7 dialogs being so drastically superior to "Linux's file dialogs"?
1) Libraries.
2) Ability to do file management inside the file dialog.
3) Workmanship. Is there something significant I'm missing here, or are you just blowing smoke? The file dialog in W7 is not only almost identical to what KDE has had since early 2002 (no, I'm not claiming they 'stole' anything), but it's also a dialog lacking the vast majority of the function that KDE has in its dialog.
No, you are missing something.

2) Ability to do file management inside the file dialog.
3) Workmanship. How can you claim that libraries in Win7 are something that Linux has is beyond me. I have the latest Ubuntu, and win7, and my ubuntu is running KDE, and honestly, KDE's dialogs suck.
Seriously, look at the left of the dialog in Win7...
http://www.treatyist.com/gallery.aspx?gallery=windows7vslinux&image=8
See that little thing that says "libraries"
See the crumb thingy at the top
And, if you actually used it, you might notice that if you hit the right mouse button, you get all the shell extensions.. and you can rename, copy, delete, etc... and even launch another app inside your file dialog...And you tell me THIS is better?

I thought Open Source was about honest communications. And, instead, I get a sea of rationalization that Linux's AMC Pacer dialogs are even in the same ballpark as Win7's Caddy's. They just aren't.
Maybe if FOSS people got paid for their product, they won't have to make it into a religious crusade and could deal with it objectively.

Rationalizations.
You are essentially missing the forest for the trees.
I find those things to be more excuses and rationalizations than causes. The forest for the trees is that the red states have pushed for an economic system that benefits them at the expense of the rest of the country.
Why should the failure of a farm be any more of an act of concern then the failure of a car company? Why should we have a national tariff to protect the production of sugar when we have no such protections against manufacturing of various goods? Isn't the ability to manufacture arguably more important than the ability to save joe farmer? Somewhere along the way, this country made the decision that the joes in the red states are entitled to federal subsidy and protectionism, but, the joe in the northern states are not.
Our current economic policy is about red states looking to sell food at the highest prices and buy the goods to make them with at the lowest. It's the same economic game that they have been playing for almost two centuries (those states that have been states that long, at least). Thus we have subsidies and protectionism for agriculture, and free trade on manufactured goods.
My argument would be that, if farm subsidies and import protectionism have actually been good for farming, and they have been, since so many of us are fat, then, why not have the same protectionism for manufacturing?
Free trade in the USA is a sham. I wrote a giant rant about this here:

Ah you are totally wrong.
Jesus Christ, it's just a clone of Flash that attempts to make Vista's
.Net as a binary substitute for the open web.Clone of Flash? Hardly? If you would have actually tried to implement something in Silverlight, you might have noticed that Microsoft actually blew off matching Flash in visual effects in order to have better server side connectivity and more developer features.
Besides, I'd take C# over ActionScript, any day of the fricking week.
And yes, Microsoft is desperately trying to compete with Chrome/Chrome OS/HTML 5, just like the company successfully killed Client-side Java and non-IE browsers as a threat to the Win32 monopoly, then sat back and let IE go rotten once it ruled the roost.
First off, let me know when an HTML 5 browser actually -ships- that works. The best we have right now is a handful of -moz and -webkit extra tags for things like rounded corners and multicolumn text, which is cool, but, even rounded corners do not concurrently work with drop shadows in the latest Chrome.
Microsoft might be all you know, but it's time to start learning about alternatives or you'll be stuck with the dinosaurs.
I program on both Linux and Windows. I have both, and use both, and while Linux has many strengths, I wouldn't be one to say that Windows is a dinosaur..
Let me know when Gnome or KDE have file dialogs that don't suck:
A user perspective breakdown of Windows 7 vs Ubuntu Linux, that's actually objective
That's not to say Linux doesn't have its merits, it does, but if you want to see a dinosaur, go ahead and invoke FileOpenASuarus-Sux on any Linux box.
Besides, if Linux is so great from stem to stern, why on earth did Google go out of their way to tell everyone that they got rid of the windowing system in Linux and wrote their own? Have you even thought that ChromeOS, if open, really means that X-Windows is dead, and every Linux will be using Google Desktop?
That's going to be the Linux of the future, an FOSS of sorts but not exactly its ok Chrome OS gradually replacing woefully obsolete X windows with a stack that will likely be increasingly proprietary.

Well, for free...
You can go here: http://www.treatyist.com/issue1/mystimulus.aspx
It's a cheesy ASP.NET app that lets you build your own stimulus package. You can pick out all sorts of cool stuff like windmill farms, nuclear power plants, fiestaware for everybody, camaros and the country of iceland.
It's not much more than a day's labor... but, if you want to imagine what could have been done with 800 billion dollars of stimulus money, it's kinda fun. It's my own stupid page but its relevant to the discussion and besides, its almost amusing to see how hopelessly confused Google is at it serving ads when trying to match text with iceland, fiestaware, and assault rifles...

Re:Just block IE from your site.
How often do you visit your site? It's entirely non-functional with javascript completely disabled and disabling it by domain (digg.com) results in a small empty ugly box. Also is it just me or is the text on the index page changing randomly of its own accord? This is "web 1.9" at best. Yuck. Also, http://www.treatyist.com/issue1/savetheearth.aspx desperately needs a redesign. Scroll-bars appear yet there is no reason to scroll. Get rid of the moving moon at the bottom.

Re:Just block IE from your site.
1) Your link is bad.
2) Your site isn't all that sophisticated. Yet you can't handle IE traffic? 85% of all traffic?
3) Your site does accept advertising for IE. I had a nice flash animation for IE8. If that isn't ironic, I don't know what is.
4) Your site doesn't even render properly in Firefox. Your 'digg submit' button on this page http://www.treatyist.com/issue1/savetheearth.aspx hides behind the first table.
5) I love in your site how you have to scroll horizontally to see all the content.
6) And what the hell is with this page http://www.treatyist.com/issue1/comradeobamawoopspirates.aspx. I can't even CLICK on the scroll barsSo, if you are giving lectures on web design, stick it in your ear.

Just block IE from your site.
I have a center - right web site http://www.treatyist.com./ Most of the left leaning folks on slashdot would probably puke at it but every web developer would like this: I block IE from using the site and redirect people to a page exhorting users to upgrade to a new browser. On that page I have links to download either Google Chrome or Firefox.
I did this because of all the CSS3 items available in Chrome (webkit) and FireFox (mozilla), like rounded corners, box shadows, and multicolumn text....and honestly, I don't use IE enough when developing to even know if the site is going to work.
I get like a trickle of hits, as I have no idea what I'm doing as far as advertising myself goes. But, I can tell how many people are getting bounced because of IE by looking at my stats for the block page and it seems more like only about a 1/3 of my hits are actually getting the IE bounce, rather than the 3/4s, if we were to believe the IE stats. I think this is an ok loss because it means I don't have to worry about IE stupid stuff, and, better still, I can start to roll out content using SVG.
I just wanted to share this because I would like to see Microsoft get on the stick. While we may love or hate Obama, we can at least all agree that IE sucks, and I'm hoping that I can convince other web site developers to block IE and redirect to a download page that explains why, and recommends users to move to FireFox or Chrome.
I'll see if I can't add a public stats page online so that everyone can see the stats for the site, and see how this IE blocking experiment works.
