I think it might just be your sense of humour vs. mine. I find the utterly bizarre idea of Ayn Rand deciding to have her head severed and kept alive completely hilarious (if I do say so myself), mainly *because* it's so bizarre.

As an amateur (hobbyist) web designer, I'm wondering what you use 1x1 images for. In my very limited experience, they're handy when stretched to various sizes, but I haven't seen a need (yet) for a one pixel offset. I realized that something were fundamentally wrong with copyright laws when I realized that Disney owns the right to Winnie-the-Pooh. Maybe it's better they don't release it on TV; then it doesn't get hacked. Nadesico and Eva certianly wouldn't survive the process. Anime's much more widespread than four years ago. Hopefully the process will continue and some cable network will see the light. More preferably, hopefully some cool developer or cofounder will put those options to good use and start an all-anime cable channel, altering only to add 3 (not 4) commercials per episode.

I know someone took great time and care drawing the new anime topic icon; but, uhm, am I the only one that finds it unrepresentatively un-kawaii? There are so many cute or cool characters out there; Ruri, Mill-chan, Ed, Miyu, Van, Lain, etc. So they probably can't be used, but fan art sites, like fredart.com have artists who would love to have their fine work represented every four days or so on the cover of /., and the results would definitely be visually pleasaing (which is kinda the point, ne?).

We use Free S/Wan set up with these wonderful docs.
We now communicate with the Linux-Firewall with PGPnet .Ok that one is not open source, but it's quite cheep at about 700 ATS (50 US$) per copy.
We also use some Linux-Laptops (old 486 and Pentium) as router. They also have freeswan on it. Hope this helps

Just read about the founder of Tripod's benevolent venture called GeekCorps which is deisgned to provide tech training and help to developing nations, those in South America and Africa included. Consider taking a sabbatical or doing something to try to help. Once altruism has opened up the user base, real tech companies from these areas can take hold and fuel some of the economy, Bangalore India being an example.

Of course, part of the problem with bringing in computers into places where other things are needed much more is that computers are considered frivolous compared to the more urgent needs of clean water, healthcare, and the like. These considerations aside, the collective community of those who are blessed with large salaries and tech access should be helping in all means possible.

I've got one of those Intellimouse Explorers (the huge silver ones with the superfluous tail light and like three extra buttons; well, what the hell, here's a http://www.microsoft.com/Mouse/explorer.htm link) and sites that won't let you back out are an incredible annoyance. See, two of the buttons on there serve as Forward/Back (respectively) while browsing the web, and after about 20 minutes of using them, I was hooked. You wouldn't believe how simple (and remarkably intuitive) to navigate with your thumb. Now if I could just find a good use for those buttons in Half-Life... I mean, sure, it's easy enough to hold down the back button and select the page before the offending site, but that would require moving my cursor over six or so linear inches of desktop space. Isn't that just a little bit unreasonable? No? Ah well.

I just wanted to throw in a quick testimonial for The Proxomitron. It's my favorite proxy filter. It protects me from all sorts of wacky hi-jinks that web sites try to pull.

A good deal of the time Science Fiction only gets part of the future right. John Brunner, at least in terms of the setting of the future, is very correct. His book foresaw the internet when most science fiction writers were still imagining big supercomputers acting as separate entities, programmed by tons of punch cards. However the pessimistic view he takes of the effect of this new future I find unbelievable. But then again, what do I know, this essay might have well caused someone to experience information overload :-)

My NAT box runs junkbuster, and that works for the os/2 machine attached to it too. At work we have NT. Instead of junkbuster, Proxomitron runs under NT and does a few tricks even Junkbuster can't manage: stops blinking .GIF files, intercepts "nasty" Javascripts and allows you to pop up a k3wl window to see what's going on.

I use the Proxomitron, which is an effective Windows-based filter, but it has difficulty with secure pages. Its license requires you to listen to some music, but is otherwise free.

Pop-ups do suck, but why complain when you can just get rid of them? I've had web pop-ups disabled for a long time; I do it with a cute piece of freeware called "Proxomitron":

It has a lot of other (configurable) usability/privacy enhancements like disabling animated gifs and blink, not letting javascript use the status bar, etc. Plus, you can write your own regular-expression based filters!

That would probably work. There would be a big outcry from a minority of people, IE enviormentalists, who can't stand to have their objectives hindered by any means. But I think overall it would be pretty easy to bribe a population given enough money. The problem is the money... Even $1000 a household will still add up to millions. And that may still be less then the amount that you can expect property values to drop... And by paying people anything you're basically admitting that nuclear power is dangerous and you need to compensate the population. This may be a short-term gain but a long-term loss as in the future people will *demand* their bribes.

Life is far easier in SimCity. You don't have to care about the short-term feelings of your population.

For basic system monitoring there is ESM. It's easilly customizable so you could extend it to do what you want to do by writing your own plugins for it. Unfortunatly it's also pretty primitive and simple so there is no GUI or centralized control.

Once upon a time, I made a fansite about a different TV show. The only copyrighted material I used was one picture of the main character (fair use 3) for non-commercial (fair use 1) purposes. I even linked to the official site (fair use 4).

The copyright owners sent me a cease and desist letter. I took the image down within half an hour of checking my mail. I would later study the issue in more depth and discover that fair use is not infringement; cease and desist letters against obvious fair use can constitute harassment.

So I asked for a license. They refused to give me one, claiming a possibility of defamation aka libel. Then I just took the site down and put a rant in its place.

I'm just not into conspicious consumption...

To start with, it would help to get a large group of authors together for a single site. I have the advantage that my site archives a fiction-writing mailing list, so I have new content most days and a ready audience of the readers of the mailing list. An original site would probably need some sort of advertising and enough content to keep people coming back.

Large sections of the text should be made freely viewable. Nobody wants to pay money for a book that they know nothing about. The amount that is free depends on your subject matter: if you are writing programming guides, your chapters are fairly self-contained, so you might want to offer the table of contents and maybe 1/3 of the book for free; if you are writing fiction, you can offer 1/2 to 3/4 of the book for free, since if you get the reader hooked, they will pay a larger amount to find out what happens :)

Keep you prices down. They won't have a nicely bound hardback, so don't charge them those sorts of prices. I would be hard-pressed to justify more than $2 per download, and would recommend $1 as a more reasonable price.

Have a convenient method of payment. This was the bane of shareware; nobody will ever send you money if you only provide a mailing address and require a check or money order. You need to either accept credit card payment or some equivalent instant payment option (PayPal.com has had some good press; I've never checked them out, so I have no idea)

Don't quit your day job. You won't make money at this very quickly, and unless you're very good, you won't make much money at all. Even authors who get published and are available at every bookstore in the country don't tend to get rich, and you won't have the advantage of shelf space or beautiful cover art. Your readership will only increase with your reputation as an author and that sort of thing happens slowly.

After all that, if anyone is still interested, let me know and I'll put a writeup of their site/book on my website for free. Due to the nature of my subject (anime fanfiction), I am not allowed to profit from my site, but I would love to help someone else profit from their works. I get about 1,500 unique visitors a day who are looking for reading material, and quite a few would also be interested in publishing their original works somewhere that they could get paid from.

I must agree Lain is quiet deep, but I would also suggest:

Rourini Kenshin (95 episodes plus 4 ovas) I believe the ovas come out on DVD in mid July, August.

Basic plot is that of a samuri (at the beginning of the Meji Era) with a dark past who now wants to pay back his debt to society by helping the poor and weak. I found it to be (I watched the episodes first) playful on some levels, but what needed to be said was said artistically and with meaning. (blah, blah, blah). I would highly suggest watching the episodes first because the ovas make a lot more sense.

Since you've also liked Lain, I think you might also want to try (Neo Genesis)Evangelion. It's my understanding that there are 26 episodes and 2 ovas... (I'm trying to work some overtime so I can by them). I have seen Ova 1 (please correct me if I'm mistaken) in DVD on amazon.com I have yet to find the episodes.... I may have missed it. [Yes other people have said]

The company that makes Rourini Kenshin (and I am impressed with their story telling) have a website Sakura Anime they have other titles that they are working on and have completed ... I'm not sure whether or not you can get DVD's yet but I know you can order from them but I would check it out!

Since you've got a little girl, one anime you might want to look out for is Card Captor Sakura. It's going to be on TV this fall (right after Pokemon, if I remember what I read rightly, and I believe they will be calling it "Card Captors" instead...). It's a very cute series about a fourth grader named Sakura, who accidentally scatters magic cards all over the place. She becomes the "Card Captor" and works to capture them with the help of the Guardian of the Cards, Kero-chan. It's very creative - Sailor Moon, as far as I'm concerned, is pretty basic stuff - beat up bad guys, blah blah blah - but Sakura has to really think to collect all the cards. It's a very positive, colorful show that manages not to be insipid.

Well, look for it this fall. (And cross your fingers that they don't change Sakura's name to the threatened 'Nikki'...)

To them, popular culture isn't culture, it's just a way for their buddys, the media barons, to make huge fortunes (and give some of it to them.). They see themselves as superior to the people they govern... and that's the quickest route to fascism I can think of.

ISP == Internet service provider. Napster does provide an Internet service (Napster Protocol servers and downloadable Napster clients). Who said that an ISP has to be an Internet uplink?

It's not a generic service that is used for anything the customer desires. It is designed explicitly as a music exchange service.

The Napster system can be used to exchange any type of file (latest Linux kernel, latest Mozilla milestone, the MS-Kerberos spec, w4r3z, pr0n, etc.) especially when standard (ftp/http) methods can be easily slashdotted. Just use the Wrapster archiver after zipping the files.
