Re:#1 questionNow, I'm not saying that most of the stuff on infomercials isn't crap, but if you know of one exception, what makes you think that there aren't any more?
Troma Films did one called The Troma System a bunch of years ago that I caught late one night. Can't say I bought any of their films - other than the ones that I already had - but it was hilarious.

Re:Really not surprised
Exactly! Although I usually buy my DVD's at the bargain bin or used. Except for Small guy TV shows like "robot chicken" or "Venture Brothers" or indie films I like, those I pay full price and where I can get them knowing the profit goes to the guys that made it.
New releases are usually netflixed, watched, then returned never to be rented or even desired to be watched again. Some movies do get purchased and watched over and over. I have every Mel-brooks film made, Yes I even own "Twelve Chairs" the incredibly rare and universally panned as horrid film of his. But then I own every film ever released by http://www.troma.com/ as well. Some are quite bad, but enjoyable after a night of binge drinking or if I'm in a weird mood. -
I wish them

Re:Surf Nazis Must DieYeah. Troma films rock. And by rock I mean to horribly horribly suck. That's their schtick though, to suck. They suck so bad that they rock. Other horrendous titles are:
Cannibal: The Musical
The Toxic Avenger
Sgt. Kabukiman NYPDSooo Bad.

Re:good luck
Sometimes there are fringe benefits to starting a club: I was a founder of the Surf Nazis Must Die club in university because the President wanted the free photocopies. The only meeting we ever had was to distribute the photocopy cards...

Re:Okay, I'll bite.Thank you, but I already know about Alfred Packer and Cannibal: The Musical.
I was hoping for something that mentioned the Packer/Pac-man connection. The closest I could come was this page, which says that Pac-Man creators Namco had a role in funding Troma's Sgt. Kabukiman NYPD. Fascinating, but going from there to Packer/Pac-Man is quite a leap, especially since Kabukiman was made before Cannibal.

Re:Okay, I'll bite.
Here are some info links about Packer:

http://www.cs.pdx.edu/~trent/ochs/lyrics /ballad-al ferd-packer.html
Trey Parker, co-creator of South Park did a movie about him called Cannibal: The Musical I don't know if they'll have that one at Blockbuster. Maybe they could just rename it pac-man, and re-release it. -
Re:It was a bad idea to begin with...
My Troma DVDs come with no region restrictions. They are an american independant movie studios. (If you don't know them, you might know the Toxic Avenger, well it was their firt big hit...)

Re:Loss of control, not piracy
I take it you've never heard of Troma. They make movies of the future!

Re:the biggest difference between VHS and DVD is
As previously said, not all movies are distributed by members of the MPAA. In fact, some companies that distribute movies actually HATE the MPAA. An example of this is Troma they don't like the MPAA, and are not members of the MPAA.
Support Troma, buy Cannibal: the Musical, Sgt. Kabukiman NYPD, Tromeo and Juliet, one of the Toxic Avenger movies or any of their other fine films, and give a hearty "Up yours, evil baby eating motherfuckin' MPAA bastards who eat babies!" to the MPAA. And hey, they even had the good sense not to cast Madonna in a movie back in the '80s! -
Re:Censored!
Heh, Hollywood Video isn't any better than Blockbuster. I rented exactly 1 DVD from them, (Requiem for a Dream) found out that they gave me the edited version, (big label on the menu thankfully) asked for an unedited version, and cancelled my membership when they didn't have one.
I judge a video store by how many Troma films they carry.

Re:Censor Us! Our Poor Little Minds Can't Handle I
At least when I go to see a movie, I know that the R rating isn't unfairly applied because the lead actor is a prolific democrat or republic or even a $cientologist.
It has been alleged by certain people (most notably Lloyd Kaufmann, head of Troma Studios) that the MPAA doles out ratings in an incredibly biased manner, from studio to studio. (I don't have any evidence to back this up, since I'm at work right now. When I get home tonight, I'll try to post something a little more relevant.) So I wouldn't accept your statement as canon, yet.

One more to add...
The least influential movie I've ever seen would have to be 'Bloodsucking Freaks'. A pseudo-porn flick I caught at the local art house theatre during Haloween. If you like midgets, doctors sucking the brains of a person with a straw and lots and lots of gratuitous nudity and blood, this is the movie for you. The movie's rights have been bought by Troma (makers of Tromio and Juliet and other "great" flicks), if that says anything. And the last I heard, you can even buy it on DVD. Huh.
