Personally, I want this so I can back up my audio CDs, using lossless compression (such as LPAC or similar programs).

I have about 400 audio CDs. Lossless compression should get that down to about 100G - which isn't *that* many DVD disks.

Given I paid a lot of money for that music over the years, it would be really nice to be able to properly back it up - not to mention being able to take it all to work to bore my cow orkers...

I was fairly impressed with the diverse set of other languages that are built on the Java Virtual Machine.

A good book to get you started thinking about such things is Programming for the Java Virtual Machine by Josh Engel. It builds a bytecode assembler language he calls Oolong, and then implements both Prolog and Scheme from there. He also throws in a regexp compiler as an exercise.

The "V" GUI applications framework is something that has interested me for some time (although, admittedly, I haven't put any effort into learning it -- PHP3 is keeping me busy enough these days). It allows you to write your application to one GUI API, and have it port very easily between X, Win16, Win32, and possibly Mac as well.

"V" is under the GPL, too...perhaps some interested coders could look into extending it to support your choice of widget libraries and other GUI environments.

I too live near Cheltenham and I take your point about GCHQ. However if GCHQ have a need to listen in to anything, no matter how it is transmitted or encrypted, they will. GSM or GPO, PCN or PGP it makes no difference. The most obvious way of doing this is by being present at the time of encryption or decryption, or by stealing the key physically, NOT by doing the maths. That's why we still pay our spies- to break in to places, plant bugs, and steal things.

Neither word2x nor mswordview do anything with macros. LAOLA includes a tool called ELSER which dumps out embedded macros, but it doesn't work with Word97 documents (which Melissa is). The mswordview site even linked to a DOS program called List Word Macros which I tried, and it doesn't support Word97 either.

I'd really like to see a dump of this virus, because I'm curious to see exactly what kind of insecurities a macro language would need to have in order to let the author both scan an address book and send email, without doing anything too suspicious in the UI. Does anyone have any better tools for looking at this file?
