Re:translation of original article according to go
Brazilian here.
Except that the whole thing appears to be some guy trolling. Let's get to the facts:
- The site (http://bobolhando.com.br) where the original article in portuguese in published is but a small blog, apparently run by a single individual. I've never heard about it also.
- The "source" cited at the end of the article is a Twitter account
- The Guardian seems to have picked on the story (don't ask me why)
- The owner of that twitter account posted the following, soon after the Guardian article: "Amigos, trollar o Guardian, quem já conseguiu? http://bit.ly/aiVTeW Texto do @Thiago__Caetano no @bobolhando sim." which translates to "Friends, trolling the Guardian, who accomplished that? Text by @Thiago__Caetano at @bobolhando got it." http://twitter.com/#!/ThiagoTG/status/4740146524061696So it seems that he got to not only troll The Guardian, but Slashdot also.

Re:Big Science in the US
recall the magnet explosion last year that shut down the LHC for a year?
I'm currently playing Angry Birds on my phone, so, yes, hilariously.
BTW, I highly recommend both the LHC and Angry Birds. The latter is highly playable, apparently the physics are correct (at least, the gravity is, not so sure about feathered-friend vs. oaken plank) and all puzzles are solvable at the maximum bonus if you have the touch.

Re:Actually twitter link
Once again I find the summary lacking. I had to read TFA to find the actual link to his twitter: http://twitter.com/stevebmicrosoft. There really isn't much there.. which explains why: a) he didn't announce it, and b) why we shouldn't care. Which of course leads to: c) why is this on slashdot?
To keep the diversity up. After this, a Linux story, then five Google and fifteen Apple stories.

Re:E-books more expensive than paper
This may not be true on other services, but I see it all the time on Amazon where new printed books are slightly or definitively less than the Kindle version. As an example Mike Birbiglia was commenting just the other day that his book was being priced that way. I see it about a quarter of the time in my experience. And in a lot of the ones where the price isn't less for the paper version, the prices are so close that the resale/loan abilities of the regular book make me just get that instead.

Looking at http://twitter.com/sarahpalinusa, the grammar is better than that, but I can actually feel some of the crazy.
Admittedly, at 137 characters, that's mainly creative get-under-limit work, but I probably would have rewritten the message by the time i started doing that much character-cutting (though that's just me)"Todd just told me our taxes paid for poisoning+torture of fishes, to try to "prove" evilution. G-d knows better! End DOE now!"

Apparently in completely unrelated news, Asus is deprecating Windows Phone 7. This even though Google totally cleaned Garmin's clock on the free navi thing.
As always, Garmin-Asus seeks the best for our consumers either on Android platform or on Windows platform. However, we see the potential of Android platform devices, so we are focusing on Android platform currently. - Steven Tu

Nothing new there, for better or worse the appstore is ruled under dictatorship-like rules. Apple's rules.
The publishing of the emulator was obviously an unfortunate mistake from someone at apple, since they would be getting lots of request from other emulator writers who previously got their app rejected.
For example, the famous psx emulator writer tweeted the following just a couple hours ago: http://twitter.com/#!/zodttd/status/28814884233 followed by http://twitter.com/#!/zodttd/status/28817744190

Re:Only one week to go!
Vista could be a great example of that. It was originally expected to ship in 2003, which became 2005. It was finally released to OEM's and large volume customers in late 2006 and to end users in 2007.
But, if you go hunting for the blurb, eventually you'll find the oldest reference is this site which has this citation...
But as always with rumour and speculation Microsoft stays quiet about it all, that is until a official, less frequented site goes and says something about it. Today I saw a tweet which linked to a Microsoft Netherlands site which briefly mentions Windows 8 when talking about the future.
"Maar het zal nog zo'n twee jaar duren voordat 'Windows 8' op de markt komt."
But, the linked article does not actually have that quote. This isn't just speculation, it isn't even a news story because the only quote is fabricated. Not a mention of "Windows 8".

Precisely. Japan's latest rock star is a discovery of the Whitman Campaign. Jerry Brown knows what I'm talkin' 'bout.
That guy is from Korea, not Japan. He just does a lot of covers of Japanese songs.

Re:This isn't exactly news...
Erm... yes, that's great and all. Except Hatsune Miku has been around since 2007, and versons of the the Vocaloid software that powers "her" has been around a good bit longer (since 2004 or so, I think). I'm pretty sure I heard reference to special-effects-heavy concerts more than a year ago.

Re:Ron Gilbert
As Ron Gilbert just put it "For you Apple apologists claiming Apple will never lock down the Mac, step one is in place and you all let it happen."
Except that "step one" is obvious good business sense given the success of the iOS App Store, whereas "step two" - locking down the Mac - would be a big, risky step.
Anyway, who cares? If and when Jobs locks down OS X, lost of people who currently use Macs will switch to Windows or Linux (which run quite happily on current Mac hardware) and if he locks down future Mac hardware, lots of people will start buying generic PC hardware instead. Most people buy Macs out of choice and are in a position to vote with their feet (c.f. Windows PCs which many people are obliged to use because of the MS monoculture).
OTOH, give it a few years for mobile network connectivity to improve and the smart way to develop homebrew software might well be as server-based, crossplatform webapps - for which a closed, secure and stable "HTML5" client device (like, ooh, an iPad, which doesn't require webapps to go through the App store and even lets you add "manifest" files to dress them up to look like native Apps) might be ideal.

Re:Ron Gilbert
As Ron Gilbert just put it
"For you Apple apologists claiming Apple will never lock down the Mac, step one is in place and you all let it happen."And we all know that there is no difference between a phone and a computer and that Apple treats the Mac just like the iPhone.
How did the parent post get marked insightful?
So because Apple has an app store that means that they will lock down the Mac? Based on what?

Re:Ron Gilbert

Re:Ron Gilbert
As Ron Gilbert just put it "For you Apple apologists claiming Apple will never lock down the Mac, step one is in place and you all let it happen."
That's not going to happen for a very simple reason. When the iPhone was originally released, it had a lot less than an App Store. It was easy to accept the App Store on the iPhone because it actually made the device more useful and was better than having no apps at all. That situation is not comparable to the Mac which is already as capable as we know a desktop computer to be. Nobody is going to go for a computer marketed as a desktop or laptop that is locked down to a single source of programs because we already have our expectations of what a desktop computer is.
Basically, releasing a Mac locked down to a single source of programs would receive the same backlash as the original iPhone did, because at that point we already had the expectation that you should be able to install apps on your smartphone. We already have the expectation that we should be able to install anything on our desktops and laptops. -

And indeed. The best way for the blog to prove itself would be to post something that would only be known in Valve internally. Now the blog could have made by someone who had a dispute with Icefrog in the past, but I doubt it's by someone in Valve.

Yes there are other products
In response to the original article, the upcoming iControlPad (made by the developers of Pandora, no, not the radio) is bypassing the apple patent troll by making it controlled by bluetooth (Source). Also don't buy one until I have bought one, limited supply demands that I'm first.
