Japanese Researchers Build Rock-paper-scissors Robot That Wins 100% of the Time
slew writes "Although the robot technically cheats because it watches your hand and can recognize what shape you are intending to make and beat it before you even know what is happening. Apparently it takes about 60ms for you to shape your hand, but the robot can recognize the shape before it is completed, and only takes 20ms to counter your shape so the results appear to the human opponent to be virtually simultaneous. I wonder how difficult it would be to add lizard and spock to the mix.... ;^)." -
Bionic Skin: the Killer App For Flexible Electronics
the_newsbeagle writes "Most of the researchers who work on flexible electronics imagine putting their materials to use in flexible displays, like a rollable, foldable iPad that you could cram in your pocket. And I'm not saying that wouldn't be cool. But researcher Takao Someya of the University of Tokyo has a different idea: He wants his ultra-thin, ultra-flexible electronics to be used as bionic skin. Someya and other researchers have created circuits that stick to your skin, and that can stretch and bend as you move your body. These materials are still in the labs, but the scientists imagine many uses for them. For example, if a synthetic skin is studded with pressure and heat sensors, it could be used as a lifelike covering for prosthetic limbs. There are also potential biomedical applications: The e-skin could discreetly monitor an outpatient's vital signs, and send the data to a nearby computer. Japanese Ruling Against Winny Dev Overturned On Appeal
Joren writes "In Japan, in a case that has been five years running, the Osaka High Court on Thursday overturned a lower court ruling that had convicted and fined the developer of controversial file-sharing software Winny of assisting violations of the Copyright Law. Originally charged in 2004, Isamu Kaneko, 39, a former research assistant at the University of Tokyo, was declared not guilty, and will not be required to pay a 1.5 million yen fine levied by a December 2006 Kyoto District Court ruling. 'Merely being aware of the possibility that the software could be abused does not constitute a crime of aiding violations of the law, and the court cannot accept that the defendant supplied the software solely to be used for copyright violations,' presiding judge Masazo Ogura said. Furthermore, in siding with the defense, the appeal ruling stated that 'Anonymity is not something to be looked on as illegal, and it is not something that applies specifically to copyright violations. The technical value of the software is neutral.'" -
Headband Gives Wearer "Sixth-Sense"
An anonymous reader writes "New Scientist reports on a headband developed at the University of Tokyo that allows the wearer to feel their surroundings at a distance — as if they had cats whiskers. Infrared sensors positioned around the headband vibrate to signal when and where an object is close. There are also a few great videos of people using it to dodge stuff while blindfolded." -

The tool is certainly very impressive and there is a demonstration video available. The end product looks like a hand-drawn object instead of the usual clinical, perfect 3D objects that are designed using standard rendering tools." This impressive technology was presented at SigGraph 1999 (PDF); a commercial product based on it is available in Japan. -

Dancing Robots Help Preserve Japanese Culture
Neil Halelamien writes "As reported on robots.net and other sources, researchers at Tokyo have used the HRP-2 Promet humanoid robot to help preserve moves from ancient Japanese dance for future generations. The researchers used motion capture to record the movements of a dancing master, then encoded and replayed them on the robot. The HRP-2 Promet robots are themselves quite interesting, capable of standing up after lying down and non-autonomously operating a backhoe. The external appearance was created by a designer known for his work on several anime series." -
Invisible Cloaks, Translucent Walls
jd writes "The University of Tokyo has developed the illusion of invisibility, under the name of 'Optical Camouflage.' The system is remarkably simple - you have a mix of light-sensitive and light-emitting devices attached to an adapted reflective surface. The devices are hooked to a computer, which simply projects on each side whatever is on the opposite side. The result is more of a translucent look, than real invisibility, but the potential is there. The inventer's next objective is to make walls that are invisible, using the same technology. Project a real outside image onto an interior wall without windows. This almost sounds more frightening than the cloak, since there's no reason why the sensors would have to be placed outside. Imagine a world where PHBs can turn their office wall into a window onto any cube. Zero privacy. The technology is great, but the potential for abuse is definitely there." A minor setback to the oligarchy of lawyers. Ellis D. Tripp writes "The SCOTUS has refused to hear an appeal of a 5th circuit court decision declaring that building codes such as the National Electrical Code lose all copyright protection once they are adopted into municipal law. Under this ruling, such codes can be freely posted on the internet or otherwise distributed for free, rather than requiring contractors or other interested parties to purchase them at often exorbitant prices each time they are revised. The original defendant, Peter Veeck, was sued by Southern Building Code Congress International for making their "Intellectual Property" available on his website."

Winny P2P Software Creator Arrested
News for nerds writes "The author of Winny, the Japanese P2P software with encrypted networking capability, similar to Freenet, has been today officially arrested for abetment of copyright violation, after the raid in the last December. He started its development in May 2002 and occasionally appeared on the web forum 2ch with his anonymous codename "47", but today turned out to be an assistant professor of computer science at the University of Tokyo in his 30s. Winny was so efficient and popular that it generated problems even at the Japanese police and the GSDF. As the Japanese police is the most advanced among the world in pulling P2P into criminal cases, outcry of users in Japan is expected." -

Tokyo University's "Microwave Rocket"

Optical Camouflage
Mike Siekkinen writes "This optical camouflage project is pretty interesting. It contains three videos demonstrating it in action. Basically they overlay a video projection of what the background behind the object to be camouflaged looks like. So if you were standing in front of a book shelf an image of the portion of the bookshelf you are blocking would be projected on to you. The results are probably better than you would expect." -
Intelligent Scalpels Through Touch Technology

Update on SuperK Detector Failure
This note came in from Director Totsuka to the press and other scientists. Hemos and I felt it deserved more than just a regular SlashBack reference, as we feel that this is an important project. (I belive this comes form a translation from japanese, so forgive the errors) this is an update to the original post on the Super-K malfunction.
As a director of the Kamioka Observatory, which owns and is responsible to operate and maintain the Super-Kamiokande detector, it is really sad that I have to announce the severe accident that occurred on November 12 and damaged the significant part of the detector. The cause and how to deal with the lo ss in future will be discussed by newly found committees. However, even before discussing with my colleagues of the Super-K and K2K collaborations, I have decided to express my intension on behalf of the staff of the Kamioka Observatory.We will rebuild the detector. There is no question. The strategy may be the following two steps, which will be proposed and discussed by my colleagues.

1. Quick restart of the K2K experiment.
- (1) We will clear the safety measures which may be suggested by the committees.
- (2) reduce the number density of the photomultiplier tubes by about a half.
- (3) use the existing resources.
- (4) resume the K2K experiment as soon as possible; the goal may be within one year.
- (1) Restore the full Super-Kamiokande detector armed with the state-of-the-art techniques.
- (2) The detector will be ready by the time of the commissioning of the JHF machine.

SuperK Neutrino Detector Severely Damaged.
Eric Sharkey writes "The Super-Kamiokande neutrino detector, which announced the discovery of neutrino oscillation and mass in 1998 (covered by Slashdot at the time), has been severely damaged. The NY Times (free reg, blah blah) has an article here. Most of the phototubes have been destroyed. Repair estimates top $30M, leaving the world far less capable of observing the next supernova neutrino burst, should it arrive before repairs or a replacement could be completed." CD: I called the lead of the project and he was in the tank checking out the damage. The webpage for the Super-Kamiokande is here. There are pictures for you to peruse. -
GRAPE6, Now With GNU/Linux Frontend, At 32 TFlops
teuben writes "I am attending the "Astrophysical Supercomputing using Particle Simulations" conference here in Tokyo, and during the first session yesterday Jun Makino announced that the GRAPE6 is now operational and running with a 4 headed linux system running 1.7GHz PC each (not a Quad, just 4 individual PCs). This prototype is now running at 32 Tflops! Best of the news is that this prototype is scalable, and this configuration is only 1/4 of the final one. Funding currently limits building faster grapes. Check out http://grape.c.u-tokyo.ac.jp/iau208/ for the conference website, and http://astrogrape.org/ for the GRAPE website." But that's not all -- Peter also has word on how you (or more likely your local astrophysics department, since that's what it's best for) can get a grape of your own, and on electronics in Japan.You can also get a baby-grape, see pictures on http://www.astro.umd.edu/~teuben/pics/japan/09/p70 90014.html which runs a good fraction of a TFlop, and will cost somewhere around 10k$.
I have some more pictures on http://www.astro.umd.edu/~teuben/pics/japan/08/ which shows the 1/4 size Grape6 running 32 Gflop. The final full version would cost about 1M$. Compare that to the AsciWhite at 12 Tflop for 100M$. Drawback of course is that the Grape only computes things similar to the gravitational N-body problem (also useful for pharmaceutical industries).
Btw, also spent some time in Akihabara on sunday, I guess we're deprived on the US east coast, the amount of DVD writers you can get here is amazing. Also very popular here seem to be all kinds of embedded units, e.g. the GPS in your car to not get lost in Tokyo!
There was an ABC news story earlier in the year on the GRAPE, but at the time it was running alpha's with their unix. They have now fully switched to linux, and this system has been running since July 5."

SNO Releases First Results
DoctorNathaniel writes "The Sudbury Neutrino Observatory has just released it's first results. SNO is basically a big tank of heavy water in a deep, dark mine in Canada that is used to detect particles coming from the sun. This result is very cool to anyone following the the science of neutrino oscillations: the new data goes a step further to proving neutrinos have mass, and that neutrinos from the sun can 'change flavour' into different kinds of neutrino. The data exclude "sterile" solar neutrinos. This data expands and compliments the results announced by Super-Kamiokande in the last few years. My glee in all this is of course partially due to the fact that I'm a collaborator on the SNO project.... a regular 'SNO-flake'."
