+1 for Ultima V. Check out Lazarus if you already haven't; while it isn't quite as good as the original (where is my cloth map and Book of Lore?) it's a worthy remake.

Seconded, Lazarus (considering it is a fan-made effort) rocks. You'll need a copy of Dungeon Siege though, but you should be able to find one from the likes of eBay (or just get a torrent, if you're so inclined).

I think almost all the Ultima's have had a remake or are currently having one made. I'm at work so I can't pull up the list I used to have, but a simple google will bring up a ton of remake projects. One of my favorites, and completed I think 2 years ago, is http://www.u5lazarus.com/ utilizing the original Dungeon Siege engine. It's pretty impressive if you are into the series. V is my favorite of them all.

Yup. It's a Dungeon Siege 1 mod, just like the Ultima V - Lazarus remake project.

On a related note, Ultima VII (which you can play on modern PCs w/ shinies using the Exult engine) is still the best Ultima of all time - its NPC AI was revolutionary for having rotating schedules and jobs, which Oblivion & Fallout 3 copied.

It might also be worth mentioning that the middle Ultima games can be played in modernised forms: for Ultima IV there's xu4, which is simply a better-looking (and sounding) version of the original, and is also cross-platform; and Ultima V has been recreated as Lazarus, as a mod for Dungeon Siege 1.

Not Dungeon Siege, but many of us like Ultima V: Lazarus remake of original Ultima V using Dungeon Siege engine.

It was probably released too late to make the cut (Xmas 2005), but my vote would go to Lazarus, the complete remake of Ultima 5 using the Dungeon Siege engine.

5 years in the making, all of the original plot, quests, cities, dungeons, NPCs etc, plus some new NPCs and quests. Amazing portrait artwork and breathtaking score including a mix original music and remakes of Ultima soundtrack classics. Plus the mod will be released as open source.

A group of grad students in Purdue's CG dept are contributing to a remake of Ultima V. They asked some undergrads (one of them being me) to help them out with various aspects of recreation, like textures or worldmap modeling.

Some folks were recreating Ultima 5 for the Dungeon Siege engine. Looks good, but far from complete.
