He was never a valuable source for anything [...]

You're entitled to your opinion on this, but it is not shared by some very credible people in the intellectual property universe:

- Managing Intellectual Property (ManagingIP) magazine has put me on its annual list of the top 50 most influential people in IP five times so far (2005, 2006, 2012, 2013, 2014).

- IAM (Intellectual Asset Management) magazine named me one of the IP personalities of 2011 (and had me on some other ranking that I can't find at the moment).

- Canadian IP lawyer Barry Sookman conducted some research on the leading IP and tech law blogs. According to his analysis (published in early 2013), my FOSS Patents blog was the #3 U.S. patent law blog at the time.

- I have received invitations to speak at conferences organized by universities and around the globe (in the U.S., literally from California to New York) and at commercial conferences in the U.S., different European countries, different Asian countries, and New Zealand. Only for logistical reasons I have had to politely decline except for invitations in my home region. I have spoken at the renowned Max Planck Institute for IP and Competition Law in Munich, at the Munich University of Technology (three times already), and the University of Bayreuth, where I shared a panel with a judge from the patent-specialized division of Germany's equivalent of the U.S. Supreme Court (see page 2 of the conference program), who is also widely expected to become one of the top-ranking judges of Europe's future Unified Patent Court. This incredibly well-respected patent judge and I both addressed the same topic, from our different vantage points, and had a panel discussion with questions from the audience and our moderator, a Switzerland-based patent law professor.

- Professor Thomas Cotter (University of Minnesota), an expert in comparative patent remedies (he travels the world to research differences between national patent laws), wrote this post about the significance of FOSS Patents earlier this year. Professor Cotter's independence is underscored by the fact that he has in recent years signed amicus curiae briefs supporting a core Apple position (on FRAND) and opposing a core Apple position (on design patent remedies).

- I could give more examples, but suffice it to say that any of the above references easily outweighs whatever a blog like Groklaw may have written about me over the years.

Mathematica 7 has launched, as noted in Stephen Wolfram's blog post. Among the new features are huge equation typesetting, transcendental roots, and discrete calculus. Looking back at the version 6 discussion, it's perhaps inevitable that comparisons will be made to CAR, CGsuite, GAP, Geogebra, Geometer's Sketchpad, Geometry Expressions, Geonext, LaTeX, Magma, Maple, Matlab, nauty, noneuclid, Pari, Sage, or SeifertView. In other news, the Wolfram Demonstrations project now has over 4000 interactive math demos.

To learn geometry, I recommend C.a.R. (Compass and Ruler), a Java application.

Why is this important to Windows users? One reason is if the RIAA has their way, Windows will be forced to make any MP3 type players copyright protected. Your only choice for freedom will be with Linux and open source.
Windows always crashes and you get used to it. I remember when I ran Windows all the time I got used to the crashes and saving things every 2 minutes just in case. Now I leave things overnight and come back and it's still there. Even if a particular program crashes, the OS doesn't! I have seen Win 2000 crash blue screen too so it's not any better. $300 for NT isn't a good choice either.
I spend several hours a week helping my friends with problems from viruses and locked up IE (spamware popups and hidden registry startups) and have been slowly changing them over to Linux.
Linux doesn't get those viruses, I download them all the time just to look them over in a binary editor, people think I am crazy but they can't affect Linux. Viruses are very hard to make work on Linux, open source developers are security minded. What does that say about the Windows developers? Why run a OS that threatens your privacy and security?
"Wine" for Linux will let you run some windows software, it is what Lindows is doing, and DOS runs fine on it. When "wine" crashes, you restart the WINDOW! it's funny!
You have total control with Linux, you can run it 24/7 without worry, it's more hacker proof than any other OS and it's what the WWW is built on! Browsing and transfers are faster and the TCP/IP stack is designed better. Software RAID is possible and easy to do, hardware cards are supported. With Mandrake sharing a dial up connection over your private LAN is easy as pressing a few buttons.
You can relax now, no more worries about spyware, crashes, restarts, viruses, hackers, firewalls, strange popups and a screwed up registry. There is no "registry" required in Linux, what a stupid concept that was. Spyware would be very hard to sneak past people since it's open source.
Your "root" directory is protected, unlike windows, linux protects it's main "system" files from "user" files. No more calls to your "computer guy" in the middle of the night.
I have personally installed Mandrake on 3 laptops and many, many different PCs, old and new. It is very, very easy now that 8.2 mandrake is out. I haven't paid for a software program in over 4 years now. I used to buy one every few months for Windows.
After showing people Linux on my laptop they all want to try it out and are amazed at how easy the conversion was because it's just like windows!

Be wary of grandiose claims for the power of LaTeX2HTML. Yes, it usually does a good job of converting simple to moderate LaTeX documents. However, once you start writing your own style files and using complex macros, it's a whole new ballgame. Theoretically, L2H can be extended to cope with any new macro, but you need Perl skills to do so and API documentation is poor-to-non-existent. Various obscure bugs may crop up from time to time, configuration for some odd situations (such as custom style files) can be non-intuitive, it's been in beta for years and releases are infrequent (although I notice that a new release came out in December).

It's not a bad program, but YMMV for actual use. (Note: I make my comments after writing a 100 page product manual in LaTeX.) OTOH, I must admit that a printed LaTeX document is a thing of beauty. If you're serious about using it, you definitely need to buy a book or two (say Lamport's and one more comprehensive reference).

If you're starting from scratch though, maybe you should give DocBook a proper go, given that it is supposed to be the format of the future and subsume all others.

That's the best way to do static documents of large size, in my opinion. Tutorials and books on the web, that sort of thing.

If you use a system such as doxygen to automatically generate documentation from code, then LaTeX is nice as an intermediate output because you can make a web page as well as nice printed output.

So I aggree with you that browsers should not be interpreting or compiling LaTeX; that doesn't mean that you have to refrain from using it when it might happen to be the best tool, however, just translate the LaTeX to HTML when you are done.

LaTeX is an excellent tool, but it's a tool to organize information into platform-independent documents. These documents are set up using pre-defined types (this is an article, a book, etc.), and then organized following the established structure for that document type. LaTeX then provides a variety of tools to simplify cross-referencing, indexing, and otherwise making logincal use of that information.

Using LaTeX to provide greater control over the layout of information on the Web seems like it would be falling into the same trap that ate HTML -- if you remember, HTML was originally intended to organize information in a logical hierarchy, not make pretty pictures.

The PAP-DVDs will use a thin layer of modified polymers while Holo-CDs (due out in 2005 with a said storage of 1500 GB) should have a layer of about 1 mm.

All of this is apparently part of the National Storage Industry Consortium. Unfortunately the access to the MORE project (Multiple Optical Recording Enhancements) is passworded.
