Explicit vectorization is indeed much more reliable than automatic vectorization, and it will always deliver better performance.

Interestingly, there seems to be quite a few abstraction layer libraries for SIMD. There are also at least Boost.SIMD (part of NT2 [1]) and Vc [2].
Several array-handling libraries (NT2 [1], Eigen [3]) also a leverage SIMD explicitly.
Alternatively there are plenty of languages based on C with explicit SIMD programming, like the Intel SPMD Compiler [4].

If you're interested in SIMD, there is also apparently a workshop being held soon on this subject in Orlando [5].

A lot of people are holding forth on why economic models are wrong, but few comments are related to the actual subject of the article. (By the way, unless I missed something, the article itself is very vague on what work is done. I think it may be referring to this Jonathan Carter, and the research findings may be related to this 2005 paper.

The article is about the following situation: you have a model (statistical model, computer simulation, etc.) that you want to use for prediction. It has some "knobs" (parameters) that you can twiddle to change its output; this is necessary because the settings of these knobs are often unknown a-priori. So people "tune" or "fit" or "calibrate" the model to observed data to determine the parameter settings in order to make predictions.

A problem occurs if there are many different "knob settings" that cause the model to behave similarly on past observed data. Statisticians call this an "identifiability problem" (since you can't hope to identify the true value of the parameters from the observed data. Ecologists call it "equifinality", since there are many equally good ways to reach the same final outcome. And engineers call it "multimodality", where the fit of the model has many local minima. (Or you could get a whole "ridge" in parameter space that is equally good everywhere along the ridge crest.)

In such circumstances, you can't determine the true values of the parameters very well, even if the model is perfect. This isn't about imperfections in the numerical model, or in the mathematical theory. It's an inherent consequence of the relationship some models have with the data.

This also is not a consequence of imprecise data. There is always some uncertainty about model parameters given noisy data, so you'll never determine the true value of parameters exactly. But this isn't what it means to be non-identifiable.

An example of the real problem of non-identifiability: suppose your model is y = (A+B) * x + error. It's pretty clear that if you measure y and x, all you can hope to determine is the linear combination A+B, and not A or B individually, even if you have perfect data. (That is, unless you have some additional source of information to constrain their values other than y and x.)

The above is a case of perfect non-identifiability. Other models are just "nearly" non-identifiable (e.g., they have "almost flat" ridges in parameter space). Then you can identify the parameters eventually, but only with unusually good data, or multiple data constraints. As an example of the latter, you could observe one quantity that constrains the parameters to a ridge in parameter space, and another quantity that constrains the parameters to a perpendicular ridge, and the intersection of the ridges is well constrained. (Think of an "X" shape, or something like this figure, except the ellipses are stretched into ridges extending across the whole parameter space).

Non-identifiability is sometimes a problem for prediction, and sometimes not. The issue is that different parameter values can be consistent with the same data. If this relationship also holds into the future, then it may not matter: you might not know what the true value of a parameter is, but if all the allowed parameter settings lead to the same predictions, maybe you don't care if you get the parameters themselves wrong.

However, the relationship may not hold into the future: parameter settings that give similar predictions for historical data may lead to very different predictions for the future. This is the real problem, and it can't necessarily be solved with better data if the model is truly non-identifiable. Then you have to simply prepare for the wide range of possible outcomes.

What the article doesn't make clear is that not all models have this problem.

I don't think that the Linux filesystems require defragmentation though

Well actually they do suffer fragmentation. It's just normally noticed as much as on a Windows Desktop system. The standard procedure is to move all your files off the disk, then copy them back on again, that way all the free space is compressed.

Just as a pedantic physics aside---what other good are physicists for??---the "differing path length" explanation for the lift generated by an airfoil is not really cricket. There is no physical law requiring air that is "together" on the leading edge of the airfoil to come back together on the trailing edge. Now, it is true that air on the top edge will tend to follow the airfoil (see Coanda Effect)), but the net effect of both the concavity of the bottom edge and the convexity of the top edge is to direct air downward. It is this re-direction, along with conservation of momentum, that generates lift. It is true that the top of the wing is at lower pressure, as can be worked out from Euler's equations. But this is more of an effect than a cause. This page has some more information.

Sorry, that's just one of my pet peeves, because it replaces the basic reason for nearly all mechanics (Newton's 2nd Law) with a magical invocation of "Bernoulli's Principle." Cheers :)

Really! People working in neural nets don't half talk a lot of bull sometimes. We have a universality theorem saying that any function can be represented by two layers of signoidal functions. So what?. Any smooth (univariate) function can be represented arbitrarily accurately by a piece of the Riemann zeta function (believe it or not!) but nobody goes round saying that this is a good way to represent functions. The existence theorem for neural nets is devoid of relevance to anything. It's just an abstract existence theorem that tells you nothing about real world applications

I suppose I could have pondered about how much time and cycles could have been spared using a simpler operating system and perhaps retro-fitting some old-school code, e.g. Tom Poindexter's Crobots ... or given my plug for a linux based version of C-Robots ... but ....

Umm, let's not and say I did. I have a Rio. Some Guy took one apart and posted info about the bits here. It's;

The blockdiagram of the Rio Player shows four main parts. First, the MP3 decoder which is located under a metal casing, so you can not see it on the pictures, it is an MAS3507D from Micronas / Intermetall. Second the CPU, an OTP version of NEC's &# 181;pD78P064. This CPU is contolling the user interface and in my opinion does the file-structure management in flash memory. Third part is the flash memory which is consists of 4 8MByte chips KM29U64000 from Samsung and an optional flash memory card. The last chip is an A40MX04 FPGA from Actel. This chip is responsible for address decoding, controlling the PC-Interface and implementing all logic functions in the Rio.

I can't find an x86 or a 68k, how 'bout you?

We would like to point out to all of the mirror sites with things like "fuck the lawyers" on them that it is because of a generous group of lawyers that we are still here. These lawyers are working for free (or much less than they could get by going over to the Dark Side) and don't deserve this kind of abuse.

Section 48 of this request states that we supposedly "have received notice through the MPA and refused to remove the information at issue". This is absolutely false! We have never received any such request (from the MPA or anybody else for that matter) and we obviously were not given the opportunity to refuse! Either Jared Bobrow needs to go back to law school or the DVD CCA needs to get a new firm. This is the kind of sloppy work that could get an important document thrown out.

The software (source as well as binaries) offered on this site can be freely redistributed because it was published under the GNU General Public License. The purpose of this software is not illegal copying of DVD disks. It is meant to provide information necessary to be able to program a DVD player for Linux. To do this, the CSS system needs to be incorporated in the player. Recently the (very weak) DVD content scrambling system was deciphered, freeing the way for a Linux DVD player. The CSS system is not a copy protection system, since it does not prevent copying of the disk. Writing information about the way an encryption scheme functions is completely legal. The source code and binaries on this site are completely legal too, since they contain no code from the DVD consortium or its members. The sources and programs on this site were written by third parties using clean-room reverse engineering methods which are (ready?) completly legal.

Luckly, it seems fairly unlikely that any law firm will ever be able to get rid of all these mirrors at this point (there are currently 41 in 8 different countries and this list is growing every day). However, I have only seen very few mirror _lists_ like this one anyplace. If anyone has the resources, it might be wise to mirror this list of mirrors as well so that the right people will still know that these mirrors exist.

The concern isn't about strange quarks; it's about a proposed state of matter called strange matter. Now I should disclaim here that, though I'm a physics grad student too, I don't know what I'm talking about, at least not firsthand... but I've heard people discuss it in seminars, so this is intended to distill those vain assertions, half-truths, and self-important obfuscations.

The basic idea is that nuclear matter as we know it--that is, stuff made of up and down quarks--is not the true ground state of QCD (the theory which models the interactions of quarks and such). It's possible that there is a stable state of matter which includes up, down, and strange quarks, all bound together; in fact, it's possible that that state is more stable than one which involves just up and down. Now normally we don't see this stuff, because there's a high energy barrier between our Plain Old Everyday matter and this strange matter. But if you get a high enough collision energy, you can tunnel through or just slop over the barrier; and then whammo! the strange matter overtakes the POE matter, like ice nine dropped into water. (Someone call Dr. Strangelove--we've got to guard our POE!)

Elsewhere, coyote-san asks, "where are the strange stars from the same effect?" Strange stars are entire stars made of strange matter. People are looking for them, but so far there's no positive evidence. One of the problems, as I understand it, is that nobody really knows how they'd look different from plain old garden variety neutron stars.

The black hole possiblity sounds sexier, but I think strangelets are cooler. :)

Larry has a very interesting take on language disign. I liked is postmodernism comments. Perl definitly feals more like english then other langauges, but maybe that's just because I'm addicted. I don't think, however, that we are at all ready for a ``universilly postmodern'' approach to computation or programming langauges as there is just too much which need to be rigorous. I think we will ultimatly need something more like the Lucky project for Haskell to do the parsing side anything. That is to say Larry's philosophy is importent even if we do need stronger theoretical building blocks then traditional imperitive programming provides.

It is great that there is actually a choice, but even though I prefer GNOME for personal reasons KDE is the choice for anyone attempting to build complex and large applications. The strongest and most understated strength of KDE is that is built on top of the MICO implementation of CORBA . Which is by very far the most advanced free implementation out there, as compared to ORBit which is what GNOME uses. This makes the real difference, at least to me. CORBA is a very powerful tool and having a robust implementation really makes a big difference. Eventually GNOME will catch up but for now for serious development it has to be KDE.

Unfortunately, the learning curve for CORBA is staggering . . .

Actually, it's not as bad as it seems at first. I am taking a distributed systems class right now where we are learning CORBA. We wrote a non-CORBA version of a distributed application for the first 3/4 of the semester using sockets, etc. (Similar to what was described above.) Then we learned a smattering of CORBA and implemented the last piece of the app in less than one week and with far less pain.

. . . and there isn't yet a Free implementation of the full complement of technologies. . .

Take a look at TAO. From what I can see, it's a fairly complete open-source(TM) impletmentation with some added real-time features to boot. I haven't used it, but it looks good.

There is also MICO.

I am not knocking OpenStep, I program in it every day. But there are some great things that CORBA allows you to do without forcing everyone to use the same platform/language, etc.
