Userfriendly turns nasty ?
Suddenly I don't like the way the last week's userfriendly.org is leading.

Paying for content.I am willing to pay for content. I actually do, but not the way you actually think. Most people think of Micropayments when they say "paying for content", and Micropayments are just not there yet. At least not for Europe, and I just will not use my credit card to pay something like 0.075$.
Most of the time, I try to buy products associated with the "online" services. For example I like online comics. Two regulars I visit are Userfriendly and General Protection Fault . For both comics I bought the albums, not because I expected new content but to make sure I still can get my comics online. This can have adverse effects, because I once had the bad luck buying books from a service that became paying afterward. Of course I was pissed, but it's the gamble you take.
If you consider slashdot as "content", well, in some way I payed: I saw the ThinkGeek ads and some products appealed to me, and so I bought those items. Perhaps not the best example, but you get the idea.Oh, and how explain that people pay for pr0n? That is "content", isn't it? Well, okay, perhaps not "content" in the usual form, but nevertheless.
Now as a final, I think your example of ringing tones for your cellphone is really ridiculous. I don't really care that my cellphone rings some Britney Spears song or the nice classic "Dring Dring" that was anyway built into my phone. Up until 6 months ago, I had a 5 year old cellphone (may it rest in peace) that "only" had 10 ringing tones. I can hardly count ring-tones as "content", I'm really sorry. A phone is for calling and not for listening to rings.
So in summary:
- People will pay for content
- The content must be worthwhile
- Some international easy way of paying small amounts must be set into place by major banks. (So don't start egold and the likes, because they are at the fringe of legality...yes I work at a bank)

Speak for yourself. I can always use more bandwidth at home. Reminds me of this Userfriendly cartoon when Stef gets on Napster at work.

No, the nail in the coffin....
No, this was not the nail in the coffin of the arcade. The nail in the coffin was all the games that took $1 or more to play, and were designed to keep sucking quarters out of your pocket, no matter how good you were. Check out today's User Friendly for a very good take on this.
Back in the day, you could play any arcade game for hours on one quarter if you were good enough. Now, no matter how good you are, you will play for 5 minutes, tops. Now, why would I go to an arcade again? -
Re:I went Outside!!!!
You know, I think that this was funnier when User Friendly did it. Much more creative, too.

Re:The name list
That's not really fair, it's like Malda getting FP or something.
More like having his name on the site. Big deal. Bseides, someone needs to do it, otherwise some l33t h4x0r or another will think it cool to do so. THere's a far more prosaic version of this over at User Friendly, where kickstart (the board admin) uses his privileges to give his regular feature (the Question of the Day) FP automatically, thereby substantially reducing the problem of FP boneheads.

Where's her boobs?!?Geesh. PvP and User Friendly notices that she doesn't have enough assets to even qualify. Flavor of the month indeed. Sheesh. Couldn't they of cast a better looking actor (example only) or just animated it as a machinima flick. Heck, I know I myself can do better. Much better.
Bounce ya' boobies.

Consulting is not the "high road"
Those who can, do.
Those who can't, teach.
Those who can't teach, consult.
I've had the displeasure of dealing with consultants many times over the years - and not once have I ever met one that truly knew anything about the topic they were 'consulting' on.
Sorry, but consulting is a huge step DOWN the evolutionary chain, not up

Mirrors, navigation designFrom their home page click on Download on that ugly yellow bar at the top, then on the left bar click on mirrors.
I don't understand why more sites don't use Yahoo!'s navigation interface design. If only Progeny and User friendly would read some Alertbox...

Re:Weird Al system
I don't know, I could see the joke being considered a parody of Columbine _and_ the MasterCard ads, just like that UF comic that hannas pointed out, it's a parody of MasterCard and Nasa.

Trivial Pursuit:Random thought: how long before Trivial Pursuit comes out with an edition specializing in technology/computer/internet subjects?
Well, there is this User Friendly cartoon sequence on Geek Jeopardy

UserFriendly had a hilarious gag
User Friendly, a hilarious internet comic strip, had a practical joke played on the cartoonist by the techies who run the site. They had uploaded photographs showing one of his main characters being abducted while requesting a ransom from his recent IPO funds.

A job when you graduate...Whether or not you want it. That's what kept from signing on the line. Others like that stability and will take the trade-off. As far as techie-life in the military...don't know.
If you like stability, the military could be good. Structure, three meals a day, and your company won't go down when tech-stocks dip.
I work for a defense contractor (And traced my path to here on this chart). Having been in the military is something they consider here as a bonus. I imagine there are other employers that also look favorably on that. Look at the committment versus the pay-off and do some homework as to how likely it is that you'll get to work where you want to. When I looked into it, that was something I considered and asked around about (and one of the things that kept me from signing on in the end). Course...that was the air force and I wasn't a techie.

i hate those kde/gnome flamewars
i never could get into one.
i didn t use kde1 because it did crash my pc every session. i had not time to look for what was doing it nor for going into a "kde sucks" thing. so i used gnome a lot. i found it ugly but it worked well. i also used enlightenment alone a lot .
then kde 2. it is just wonderfull. simply wonderfull. there are a few bugs but ,with every compilationfrom cvs , i saw one or another leaving the scene on a daily basis.
their developpment rate is incredible. and they release good stuff!!
mozilla is still better than khtml but too heavy. i fire it only when i know konqueror won t do the stuff.
but i don t find myself going into a "kde rules" frenzy.
and i m sure gnome2 will be great when it s ready.
but there are discussions i lack which should happen here, on slashdot:
-in the kde world, the kompany is doing a great deal of fast and efficient work for the kde project. but at the same time it s releasing closed source programms in order to finance itself. In particular, they plan to release an outlook killer, keeping the server side closed. Also they are really sincere about giving to the community, just finding a way to fund themselves.
-in the gnome world, there seems to be a lot of effort put into tunnelling apps into the user desktop and deals between those entities: eazel, ximian and red hat . a lot of marketing ...which is, as we all know it, the real evil behind m$
the analogy between the difficulties that compagnies related to those projects face stroke me more than the differences .
I m sure such matters should be discussed here more often than , say, lego stories as there are plenty of solutions which could come from here to help all of them. -
A couple I read everyday:I read these everyday, weekends included:

User Friendly???
What happened to User Friendly? I used to read it when I had time for comics, now I really don't read any of the comics out there. I'm surprised now one has mentioned User Friendly already. Is it dead? Is it bad compared to the rest? There was a time when a good joke in User Friendly could make it as a news post on slashdot... must've been years ago

Re:Can you Americans take anything seriously ?Whilst I imagine many of your comments are along these lines from the nature of your nick and signature, I would have to say such a narrow minded viewpoint is not in any way helpful to promoting the ideas our British nation puts forward.
Granted, the concept of adults following a child's cartoon strip somewhat fanatically seems immature. However if you cannot generalise all cartoons to be written for children. Userfriendly for example is most certainly not directed at children. It is for the "hardcore geek", that is, you.
It seems a pity that a nation such as Great Britain is let down and classed as pompous due to persons such as yourself giving such a narrow minded viewpoint. Admittedly, I realise much of what you have to say is written with a dry sense of humour, however we have become a respected nation for our tolerance and acceptance of the "other person's point of view". Perhaps you should look beyond the first few links, and note that not all cartoons are for children. We ourselves have cartoons in the broadsheet newspapers. One surely cannot expect a five year old to understand a cartoon such as this one's political slant and humour.

You missed the best ones!Your list of links has no mention of PvP, Sinfest or Penny Arcade.
LOL, that other online comic looks like it was created by a pre-schooler.

MORE INFO THAN A BANANA JR 6000 CAN PROCESS!!i've recently begun a strip of my own (sorry, nothing to post and i wouldn't presume to utter the title in the same sentence as bloom county) and this sent me on a quest for bloom books. off to the harvard bookstore i trod.
"what do you *mean*, 'out of print' you sniveling twinkee-eating cockroach?", i queried the weird-harold lookalike.
i thought i was going to be sick. not for my lack of reading material but for some of the finest toon material ever to grace pulp, for a lost generation thinking that calvin had no peer. around the corner to the used bookstore. SEVEN OF NINE tomes for the obscenely low price of $35. i'm not sure what the cashier made of my wide-eyed dollar-waiving self.
this has brought me to one, inescapable conclusion. we must find berke, strap him to a suitable table and make him bring back the crew.
look, i'm completely cool with civility, but there comes a time when asking nice just isn't going to cut it. it's also clear that mr. breathed isn't exactly beyond using this tactic himself (see "toons for our times", pg. 59). no, i'm serious. i'm starting a website and an email campaign to petition the man to return to his sanity. he can ignore us at his own peril.
that having been said, some of his original strips are for sale - he has apparently given two years worth of strips to his stepmom and his full blessing to sell them. they can be found at:
http://www.neosoft.com/~bloom/avail1.htm
you need to have the original books to determine which are which, but
...who is going to buy one of these who doesn't have the books?! it isn't very clear, but the cheapo ones are $250 (they're in red), the regular ones are $400 and the color sunday strips are $900. the page also isn't clear on who you need to contact - carolynbreathed@hotmail.com. she seems like a very nice woman, but she does reply in ALL CAPS. be nice to her.if any of you came through halfway and don't really know the whole gang, an exhaustive rundown can be found at http://www.droops.cybermail.net/bchistory/bchist1
9 81.html, covering the first appearance of limekiller to the ultimate, last toon.finally, for anyone who doubts that illiad (respects || rips off) bloom county, please see this userfriendly.org toon..
not for my sake, but please mod the everyloving hell out of this post. i'd really like to see some of his toons get into the hands of fans.

I thought the same thing about User Friendly as well, and Iliad has heard it about a bazillion times by now.
Breathed was just about the only thing keeping me going through the 80s....
