Re:It's back...
Good job with posting a URL on SLASHDOT and saying its working. I think you just pissed off a cyborg from future. GL
Oh well, at least you didn't reach the mighty heights attained by our editors who posted the url of that poor company utube (on the story at front page) which was complaining about its site utube.com getting hammered with the traffic intended for YouTube. Er..wait.. -
Effects real people as well
I have little sympathy with companies sending marketing email getting branded as junk emailers they are sending Unsolicited bulk or bulk email.
This effects real people as well. Getting blacklisted is a way of life for me online because of my name. Yes Spamer really is my surname/family name. If you have any doubts try searching for me on uk directory enquires / electoral role
Its gotten me accused of being of being a joe-job for trying to do my job as the postmaster for a domain.
Its gotten my email addresses blacklisted, it's gotten me blocked from creating accounts on web-sites including utube and my local newspaper.
Professionals should start call junk email Unsolicited bulk or bulk email instead of using slang. -
Re:the U-Bend
yeah, da utube rulzzz !

Re:It's all Utube Has
Umm... I doubt that Universal Tube & Rollform Equipment have any content on their site which is copyrighted by other providers. YouTube, on the other hand...

Universal Lawyers
What is it with companies starting with "Universal" and web 2.0 litigation?

It's down
Youtube seems to be down.
here -
I can't find the clips anywhere!
I'm looking here. I guess the Internet really is just a bunch of tubes (or pipes, really). Now they're down!
-
Here's how to let them know how you feel!
They have a convenient form on their site. It could help to demoralize them on this issue if a lot of Slashdotters got on there and sent Utube their thoughts. Personally, I think that the whole thing is absurd. Good luck!

Incompetence or ignorance?
It's no wonder that U Tube looses customers. A Google search for "U Tube" or search for "utube"doesn't yield Universal Tube's homepage as any of the first 100 results. Why is this? Well, here's one reason. Another one is that the web page uses completely non-semantic markup without a single H1 element in the source code. Non-semantic code is basically just jibberish for search engines, so they could just as well have riddled their pages with googlygook. The search results would be the same.
Yet another reason is that "utube" or "u tube" is mentioned nowhere on their pages. The design is built with endless amounts of nested tables. The markup-to-content ratio is sky-high. And they're using JavaScript as the main means for navigation. It almost looks like they're actively blocking users and search engines from making any sence of their web pages. A redesign with a solid implementation of semantic and accessible markup, would increase the searchability and usability of their pages by an order of magnitude and they would both get happier customers and less reason to go to court.
But it's of course much easier to just sue YouTube for their own incompetence. Or ignorance. Or both.

Soundspace (not namespace) problem
If a trademarked sound (not even a specific spelling) can be enforced throughout all industries, the good names really will be all taken soon. This lawsuit would make more sense if
(1) youtube (2005) had launched after utube.com (2006),
(2) the company behind utube was actually named "You Tube", or
(3) youtube was into manufacturing, and not entertainment. -

Re:There is no such thing as bad publicity
Do you realize what utube.com sells? It's not consumer goods like iPods or DVDs. It's industrial pipe and tube equipment. I would be shocked if they were getting any extra sales from the increased hits. An industrial strength lathe or shear welder isn't the kind of thing you buy on a whim while looking for videos on the internet.
Which isn't to say they don't like the extra publicity. But the image on their front page would use almost 8 terabytes (122K * 68 million) a month all by itself. I don't know what that level of hosting costs, but it's probably not cheap and it's probably a lot more expensive than what their competitors are paying.

microsoft to sue utube?
After all, they stole icons from windows, didn't they?
-
UTube could make a fortune
...by simply adding Google ads to their homepage.
Most sites would kill to get this level of traffic, and all these guys can think of is getting it stopped. -

Re:who was there first
universaltube.com: 1980
utube.com: 1985
universaltubes.com: 1990
all 3 do the same job and have the same name, why isn't utube suing the others and vice versa? -
Only reason why this has happened
is because a lot of authorities weren't aware of YouTube, but when Google bought them and it was front page news, suddenly everyone's logging on the (wrong) website, realising that (they're on the wrong site) there's copyrighted material on there and requesting it to be removed.
Slipped a nice little joke in there for everyone to enjoy too. -

Re:Insult to injury
Well, the prices are good, but when something weighs 15,000 lbs. it's the shipping that's a killer.

Mod this up!
Where are my mod point when i need them!
Sue slashdot for linking them! If this is not a deliberated Denial Of Service I cannot tell what is! It is totally irresponbible to link to utube.com if you meant yourtube.com!.

Nothing to see here, it's up
Their site is fine now. Their equipment, though...
They're a surplus machinery dealer, and much of their equipment has seen hard use followed by neglect. The neglect is worse than the hard use. This lathe is a good example. That's a good Monarch precision lathe, but the picture, taken in 2000, shows considerable rust. Most of their gear is like that; it looks like it came out of an abandoned factory. It's repairable; you can send the lathe back to Monarch for an overhaul. But it's not good for much in its current condition. If there's any rust in the bearings, the precision is lost.
For comparison, see this Monarch Lathe on eBay. Made in 1950, and still in good shape. Those things will last a century if cared for.
If you have machinery like that around that's not in use, you have to oil it, then wrap it in plastic with some dessicant inside.

Slashdotted!
Now, whatever you do, don't click this link Resist the temptation. It isn't worth it. Really, it's not all that interesting.

Re:risk taking
IANAL, but I think it'd be fairly risky to sue U-Tube for copyright infringement, yes.
