Federal Government Inadvertently Deleted Ca.Gov

An anonymous reader writes "A Network World reader whose brother works for a California state agency forwarded me an e-mail alert that his brother received: "The Department of Technology Services (DTS) has notified us that the Federal Government inadvertently deleted the CA.GOV domain. As the evening progresses you may experience an impact in your ability to access some Web sites and exchange e-mail. DTS is working with their federal counterparts to restore service as quickly as possible but service may not be restored until tomorrow morning.""

Many folks leave the U.S. because they don't approve of the way it's governed; during the Vietnam war, when I was of draft age, I considered doing it myself. I still fantasize about moving to Australia (now for cultural rather than political reasons), but never will, being too old to get a work visa.

Somalia was hyperbole on my part (not even Somalis care for their lack of functional government). That hype had two points: you have a lot more choice about what kind of government you live under than you like to pretend you do. And even an inept government is better than no government.

I didn't say there was no alternative. I said that, for most people, there's no practical alternative.

My own employer, Sun, is a case in point. It used to be a leader in the anti-Microsoft crusade. When I first worked for them in 1998, there was a rule (widely ignored) against using any Microsoft product in-house unless there was an absolute need. Now management has decided (and I thoroughly agree) that this religious attitude is very bad for the company. So Windows-based laptops are widely used to supplement the Solaris SunRays that are everywhere. Microsoft Office is still forbidden, but only because we make a competing product. And even there, the legal department is exempt; I guess they need to trade files with outside lawyers.

Oh yes, and we just became a Microsoft OEM. Which will make my job writing manuals for x64 systems a lot easier.

Perhaps you think Sun should have stuck by its guns and continued to fight the good fight, whatever the cost. oh yes, it has sooo fallen off the left edge.

CA isn't crazy lefties--it's home to the new billionaires, the largest economy in the US, and a lot of republican counties. Everyone thinks it's lefty land because there's berkeley and a lot of queers, but CA is a state of big business and traditional politics.

I live in SF and I assure you our mayor is no more radical (and actually a lot more plain) than john edwards. Which is actually kind of amusing when you think about it--the most populist democratic frontrunner is from a very red state (NC). true about the Gov's, but representatives and senators (god we had some obnoxious senators!) were consistently republican when i was there. (i'm the original AC and moved to CA in 2000). I like edwards a lot more than obama (he makes very junior policy mistakes) and hillary (she just seems too afraid to lead on important issues, probably because of past failures in healthcare reform).

I assume it's changed a lot since I graduated HS (Davidson County) in 1995 and finished at ASU (thank u interwebs for educating the populace somewhat), but I was honestly very surprised to find that CA was in some ways very right wing (i always heard of it as the land of fruits and nuts ya know). I say this because I grew up in the country in NC and found the effects of class-based discrimination to be similar to race based discrimination-- especially in places like SF. Overall, racial segregation and racially biased policies were much more obvious in SF than where I grew up in NC (again, skewed because i was from a smaller environment). Regardless, i tend to scoff at the notion that SF is truly liberal when class based discrimination here is just as disturbing as in the south (and racial fears are much more obvious--service employee hiring and people responding to minorities on the street). In addition, the notion of CA as a liberal/populist state is silly--there's a lot of money in this state and money likes to protect itself.

anyway, my mom's a minister now in PA, so i dont get to visit NC anymore :/ unless we cant sell our old house...then maybe i'll be doing maintenance crap every couple years...know anyone that wants a three bedroom on highrock lake? :P
