I believe what you are refering to is this:

Re:Muybridge
Very much so. To the point that when I first started studying Muybridge recently, I began to wonder what new innovations might be in the Virtual Camera patents. I'm really not seeing them...

Bullet Time?
When you say bullet time, do you mean the bullet CGI'd in? or just the camera panning? My understanding was that it was just an extension of the virtual camera system, which was originally developed using actual film. (Though the patent also covers use with digital capture...)

Re:NOT a Matrix ripoffNot quite. In the behind the scenes stuff, John Gaeta says "bullet time" was developed specifically for The Matrix. However, he does not give anything about the Gap commercials. You're just supposed to assume it came out of that.
But have a look at this article from American Cinematographer, describing the "virtual camera" system. It's dated 1996 -- three years before The Matrix was released.
I'm sure the people who made The Matrix would like everyone to believe they invented their techniques out of thin air, but the truth is, the idea had been around for a while.

Re:A league of their own
You are correct that the 3D camera technique was popularized by The Matrix, but invented before that movie was made. It was used in commercials such as those for The Gap, and is called virtual camera. VC has their own camera rigs, which are patented, but I believe the people working on The Matrix seem to have built their own rigs, and thus avoided having to pay any royalty fees. (Notice that there is little mention of The Matrix on the virtual camera website.)

Re:The Matrix, or The Gap?I understand that movies take a long time to make, but I am fairly certain that the technique in question was developed independently, first used in commercials, and then later used in movies such as "The Matrix".
I am not sure if the people behind the Matrix used equipment from the "Virtual Camera" people, or if they just rolled their own. Probably the latter, since the virtual camera website makes no metion of "The Matrix".

The Matrix, or The Gap?It should be pointed out that the "Virtual Camera" technique saw its first prominent use in commercials for The Gap, long before "The Matrix" was produced.
With that in mind, I believe this technique should no longer be called "bullet time". Instead, it should be called "khaki time".
