Re:Crouch and Prone?
Oog, now that will be a tough one. I suspect the raw sensory input of the Omni is very much like walking around the world in a giant gerbil ball...
They've actually had the 'giant gerbil ball' game system for a while now:

I saw this at NextFest a few years ago. -

Re:sphere = infinite plane
While this is definitely cool, I prefer the simple and elegant solution of walking inside a sphere.
And there are actual implementations, e.g.:

inching towards VR...
Next... get a few Wiimotes and add some more points to track the rest of your body. Then get a head mounted display or some 3D glasses, and plug it all into one of the virtual worlds out there. For movement, I suppose you might want to also add in an omnidirectional treadmill, or a giant hamster ball (I am not making this up)...

Re:The holodeck
We just haven't figured out how to build [the holodeck] yet.
A virtusphere setup comes pretty close. It just doesn't yet fit in the home gamer's living room or budget. -
If...
They get these, I'll be there!

You mean, like this Virtursphere?
http://www.virtusphere.com/Virtusphere has been around for awhile, but the guys doing it are in Russia somewhere I think.

Another solution....
a big gerbel wheel.... errr.... ball.

this looks pretty cool, although since your walking on a sloped surface and can't actually see your feet, i would expect a lot of stumbling around at first. I can see somebody sprinting and tripping and rolling up the side of the thing. -
Re:fantasy flight simulators
I have an even better idea. Take a robot from Aliens in which Ripley fought the queen, make it somewhat operational (no need to actually walk), so that you can get in it and control it. Place a concave screen in front of you, stereo glasses, good sound system and hydraulics. There is no need to put the player inside a pod, he should be as close to the simulated action as possible.
It's still quite difficult to simulate actual walking experience, although some have come quite close, so may be my idea is a good compromise for the time being. -
Better tracking techniques
There are much better techniques for motion capture. The guys from VirtuSphere had a great project some time ago, where a special suit recorded all movements. Judging from demos they had on the site (now apparently removed), the thing was very accurate (and dirt cheap).

How 'bout a Sphere
