Says Graham Cluley, senior technology consultant for Sophos. "There is a growing trend for hacking gangs to break into innocent people's computers to spy, to steal, and to cause damage. This sentence sends out a strong message to other hackers that infecting others with Trojan horses and other malware is not acceptable." So Justice Department: You going to do anything about this, or are you corporate shills too? -

quote: "Newscorp Investments is Rupert Murdoch's main British holding company. Although the group's profits over the past 11 years add up to £1.4 billion ($2.1 billion), it has paid no net British corporation tax."
He manages this by organising his companies into a complex web of subsidiaries incorporated in various tax havens such as the Cayman Islands. This also means he can get around the reporting requirements of financial regulators such as the SEC and the FSA. -

Give other researchers time to read to paper first
Posting this as newsworthy less than a week after it was published in a journal is silly. Research takes time, debunking research takes more time.
The authors of the original paper have posted their rebutal already (as linked to by Millionth Monkey. At the moment its still a virtual mud-fight, each side calling the others' data and method wrong.
The abstract from this paper reads like a shotgun attack on the original paper, if your going to critique another author's work it helps not call their data obselete and their method poor, at least not in the abstract. You have a better chance of cooperation and admission of error then.
Both authors of this paper also seem to be first time authors in the field (not that the data should be discounted on that fact alone), McIntyre has no apparent affiliation with a university and McKitrick is an Economist (who has published before, albeit in book form).
For further backup of their theory, more sources are needed (they don't appear to include any supportive references). For example, we have John Daly's account of the hockey stick. There's also Massan's critique, showing essentially the same thing (medieval warm period being ignored by Mann et al.) This data seems to have been sourced from The Greening Earth Society, which, conveniently, is a Oil lobbying organisation.
We can find even more Oil funded rebutals to the original Mann paper, 1,2 (a tenuous link to the Greening Earth Society and General Motors...)
Citing a paper, published in the last week, submitted by an Anonymous Reader (to Slashdot), using the National Post and USA Today as supporting material isn't the proper way to do serious science. The USA Today article opens with " An important new paper in the journal Energy & Environment". The paper is a week old!
Anyway, at least I have some fun reading tonight, ooh, and some data to play with.

Re:The good guys won.
In the US too scientists were condemned for holding supposedly communist views. The one that springs to mind is quantum physicist David Bohm. During the McCarthy era he refused to testify, and was stripped of his US citizenship. His position at Princeton was revoked and he was forced into expatriation.
So it's not quite as bad as sending people to the Gulag but it's not altogether nice, wouldn't you say? -
YOU SHOULD ALL BE PANICKING!
The well-known Liberal surveillance weather balloon that Liberals would have you believe to be the "moon" is held in its orbit by an intricate set of gravitational checks and balances to which the tides are integral. The "moon" has been shown by scientific experts to be moving further away from the earth as the tides grow slower over time, due to that, luckily, the Liberals who put the thing where it is failed to take the tides into consideration when they worked out the math controlling its movement, meaning the moon would eventually fall out of Earth's orbit, leaving God-fearing Americans once again free to exercise their Second Amendment Rights. However, the earth slowing down in its rotation would not change the rate of the rotation of the tides, due to Newton's laws of motion.
As we can see, the Earth slowing down will actually cause the moon to gradually become closer to the earth over time, eventually leading it to knock God-fearing Conservative anti-ballilstic-missle satellites out of orbit or-- even worse-- eventually strike the earth, ending all life on earth.
It is clear that this is just what the Liberals want. How did they cause this? The answer is obvious. The "Global Warming" myth was first perpetuated in 1979 (link) by the well-known Liberal, Margaret Thatcher from socialist Britain-- 1979, the same year that the tidal effect on the Moon was first discovered. It is clear that the so-called "global warming" effect was simply a straw man created by the Liberal establishment in order to have an excuse to put into place measures that would cause the slowing-down-of-the-earth effect needed to correct the mistakes in the design of their "Moon" weather balloon and cause the destruction of God-fearing Conservative satellites, thus increasing America's moral decay. Fact: This "El Nino" phenomenon did not take place once-- ever-- before the institution of so-called "anti-global-warming" measures such as the banning of CFCs. As proof, i point you to the last 80 years of "Time" magazine, preserved in my attic, in which El Nino is never mentioned prior to the 90s, even despite the well-known Liberal influences on the magazine.
I think the course of action is clear to all of us. I encourage you all to do your duty as americans, and do what must be done, about this moral scourge on God's Earth's natural rotation. -
Re:This is news?
Warning: Some ideologies on the Net are smaller than they appear.
Yes, and the myth that it is a "well-respected theory within the scientific community" is one of them.
There has been a great deal of misinformation, propaganda and flat-out Junk Science on this issue disseminated in the last decade or so -- including statements from so-called "scientific societies" that turn out to contain nothing more than cosmetologists, psychologists, gynecologists, et. al.
The FACTS remain that there is NO scientific consensus on the issue, regardless Al Gore's unsubstantiated claims in his Earth in the Balance polemic. The only reliable data on the subject, a Gallup Poll, shows that the majority of climatologists do not believe that global warming is human-caused.
You are correct that information on Global Warming is easy to find, such as here, here, here and here among others too numerous to list.
Sorry to burst your bubble, but "global warming" isn't real.

Yeah, give me a Windoze system with this...... So let's just say that the German Army sends up this satellite, and it handles the communications securely, and they are absolutely sure that nobody has intercepted the signal, so it bounces from their spy's little notebook+dish, up to the bird, and down, ever so securely to the server (on M$ Windoze, on a system in their capital), through the decryption server, and from there it goes across the street, through a ring network, over to the next city, up to another satellite dish, up to another satellite, down to Denver, back over to New York by Sprint cable, through a subocean cable, into France, into Berlin, and into the office of their spymaster.
Or something.
So it's good to know that our communications will be secure.
Ummm.... does anybody remember that RFP by the German Army for a non-M$ operating system?

Re:Voluntarily? HAH!I would be interested to read studies that attempt to refute global warming or show that the sea level isn't rising. I think that would make for an interesting discussion. You provided nothing but assertions and I chose to challenge that.
I would very much like to discuss that.
Refuting global warming
Refuting importance of CO2 compared to H2O in global warming
Refuting rising sea levelsPlease give them a read and we'll continue the discussion on those points. I do eagerly await your response.
-
Re:Weather != ClimateWell, yes, it doesn't take a genius to figure that even a relatively small rise in sea level would be extremely bad for millions of people who live along the coast, not to mention the negative economic impact.
What makes you think the sea level will rise? Because "warmer temperature, ice melts, sea level rises?" Ok, maybe it's that simple. Or maybe not.
Sea level has fallen 30cm in last 150 years in NZ
Global warming will not cause sea level rise
Sea levels falling in TuvaluIn short, evidence shows that the sea level has fallen over the last 150 years despite the modest rise in temperatures in the early 1900's. That combined with the above links that show that many believe that global warming does not necessarily mean rising sea levels mean that even if there were global warming, it is far frrom certain that sea levels would rise.
Check the links out. The first one is especially convincing and interesting reading.
All in all I see you falling prey to lots of propaganda that has been repeated in the media but that a precious few have really taken the time to investigate. You automatically assume that there is global warming. You automatically assume that that means there would be a rise in sea level. You automatically assume that that would be bad for humans.
Unfortunately there isn't much middle ground. Whatever you read is either for it or against it--almost always with the disclaimer "...but we really don't know yet." I can give you evidence after evidence and you can discard it one after the other claiming it is biased. But from my point of view your sources are biased.
That said, I think I'm done.

Re:Preserve the seaweedsProbably fighting agains rivers/seas pollution is a better idea, since seaweeds are responsible for 90% of the oxigen production are done by them.
Cite that 90%.
I've heard that NASA spent 2 years developing a pen capable of writing in 0g. The russians used a pencil. Cite that 90%.
A lot of people have heard that. It's wrong.
That's exactly the point, don't just start acting, try the simplicity, haven't we learned anything with the fight Windows vs. Unix?
What does Win v. *nix have to do with removing CO2 from the atmosphere?
In case you missed it, Atmospheric Carbon Dioxide is rising exponentially, seaweed is limited in where it can grow, and growth is held in balance with the animals the eat it. Oh, something interesting about seaweed.
Simplicity is much better, try preserving seaweeds instead of build expensive CO2 extractors and planting trees.
Nature is NOT simple. Have a look at how simple glucose metabolism is, and then consider it's one of the most basic processes for the majority of animal life.
Oh, and don't forget about the Hydrogen-cells engine, now a days it can be produced, but due to financial problems it is not as popular as it should be.
It's called a "fuel cell", and it's not extremely simple, either.
I'll give you credit and say, "There's one more troll sated."
woof.
I'll bet his answer to the Middle East situation is situation is, "If you guys would simply stop fighting, everyone will be happier."
The world is not a simple place, despite being filled with simple people. -

Re:KAL's real problem
"The following internal safety audit report into Korean Airlines flying operations was conducted in late 1998 by pilots employed by KAL. The KAL Safety Audit report was allegedly part of a wider program being overseen by Delta Airlines of America. The Delta Audit of KAL was allegedly required by the US Federal Aviation Authority (FAA) and insurance companies in the wake of the Korean Airlines B747 crash at Guam on 06/08/97 (Flt 801) as a precursor to the setting up of a proposed code sharing arrangement between KAL and Delta Airlines."
"UPDATE 2001: As of January 2001, pilot reports indicate that from an operational point of view things have certainly improved in KAL associated with the fallout of the leaked KAL safety audit listed below and the decision by KAL management to engage Boeing Flight Safety to retrain KAL pilots in basic Cockpit/Crew Resource Management (CRM) techniques. This, coupled with a marked improvement in basic democratic principles within Korea itself provides some hope that the improvements in flight operational standards associated with Boeing Flight Safety's involvement with KAL may become lasting feature within the company. Alex Paterson (20 January 2001)"

Also a good link
The Hockey Stick theory questioned. Orwellian memory holes, here we come. After all, we can't have a medieval warm period (warmer than today claimed the IPCC in 1995!) unrelated to greenhouse gases. That same thing may be happening now beyond our control. It's a shame that borehole data only goes back to 1500. I would have loved to see if it confirmed or denied a medieval warm period from 1000 to 1500.

How about a balanced view, Slashdot?
We could conceivably be over-estimating the effect of human activity on the Earth's climate, but alternatively we could also be under-estimating it. -- IPCC Chair
What kind of ridiculous statement is that? He might as well say he doesn't have a clue what is going on. Don't rely on UN bureaucrats, get the facts for yourself. John Daly is a noted opponent of the IPCC's shenanigans and has a web site chock full of hard facts and data. Interesting things the IPCC has completely ignored include the satellite temperature records which show no net warming since they were sent up in the late 70's. Mysteriously enough, only a highly-questionable surface record cobbled together from equally questionable sources, many in third world countries, actually shows any warming. Here's a nice graph to look at. Why doesn't the surface record agree with the satellite records? Hmmm....
All of John Daly's site is a good read, with many guest writers that don't tow the IPCC line. The IPCC is hardly an honest, unbiased group. They are a political agency of the UN. Nothing more and nothing less.
And Slashdot, please stop mimicking the liberal media mindset that the earth is undeniably warming, and furthermore that "everyone" agrees with that statement. They don't. Climate science is still a region of massive debate and we can't just say with certainty what the climate will be like in 100 years. Current climate models are trying to extrapolate from very limited datasets. If we had, say, a 1000 years of hard, reliable data, then we could estimate the next 100 with some accuracy. But we barely have 100 years of data now....and never forget that the climate changed far before man ever was around. -

Global Warming FUD?I dunno. I've always been skeptical of the lack of certainty atmospheric scientists seem to exhibit with respect to their claims of global warming... first it's getting warmer, then it's getting colder. The only thing we know for certain is that we don't seem to know much for certain. (Besides, would global warming be all that bad? Ask a Canadian.)
Take a gander at John Daily's page, Waiting for Global Warming, from where you can follow links to NOAA and NASA evidence suggesting that the global warming phenomenon is really systematic error in the climate record.
But by all means, if you don't want to look for ET reruns of "I Love Lucy" analogues, then pitch in on a decent atmospheric model. If we're actually headed for an Ice Age, it'd be nice to know in advance.
