You call that a string of murders?Four in two years? Given that they have two million drivers, for only four murderers to have slipped through isn't that bad. Relatively.

Re:Uber should be shut down
Uber came up with a business model reliant on ignoring safety regulations for drivers and riders. With predictable result of enabling murderers and rapists. Read! Absence of ethics as reflected in stealing money from equity, stealing intellectual property, stiffing drivers with equivalent pay-day auto loans for company vehicles, and allowing wanton sexual harassment without punishment.

Re:Prior art?
You act like if we were still living in the times where you'd get fake taxis robbing you.
As opposed to the real Uber and Lyft drivers who might do that or worse?
Btw, nothing prevent the "place where you live" to force Uber to have camera in their cars.
Are you an idiot or something? If Uber and its drivers contend they don't need a commercial license, commercial insurance, or otherwise comply with any other regulation around vehicles for hire
... WTF would make you think they'd care about this regulation? The entire business model of Uber is "we're not a cab company, so the rules don't apply".
You really think they'll ignore all of the other laws and follow that one? Why the hell would you think that? Uber has basically stated the rules don't apply to them and too bad. They would ignore that rule along with all of the other ones they have decreed they're not subject to.

Re:Prior art?
And yet, there are literally millions of assholes like me who use Uber constantly, and would take a ride managed by Uber over a taxi any day.
Meh, I place no judgement on people who use the service. Some schmuck trying to save a couple of bucks is understandable, it doesn't make you an asshole.
Why we allow a corporation to claim a car for hire isn't a care for hire "because business model"
... that I have no idea. However, where I live, taxis -- in addition to being properly licensed and insured -- must also have a camera in their vehicle. The cab drivers fought it tooth and nail until one of their own was violently robbed. Which means unlike Uber, there's a record of a crime if your driver turns out to be a mugger or a rapist.
If you choose to get into a car with a random stranger, who isn't properly licensed or insured, that's your damned choice.
To me Uber is just a bootleg cab company claiming taxi regulations don't apply to them. So, I don't trust them and have no intention of rewarding them for it.
But get into a random car with a driver who has had no background check or otherwise complied with any of the laws which exist for my safety? No thanks.

Re:Well thats odd
I'm not sure how uber gets around the disabled access regulations
The exact same way they get around regulations everywhere they operate: by pretending the regulations don't apply to them.
My city has mandatory cameras in cabs -- because cab drivers have committed sexual assaults, and because cab drivers get robbed. The fought it tooth and nail until one of their own was violently robbed and the camera would have helped with the conviction.
Uber, like with insurance and proper licensing, doesn't adhere to this. Uber's entire business model is being an bootleg cab dispatch company which ignores the rules and regulations. That's kind of that they do.
When you ride with Uber, you're just getting into a stranger's car. And that doesn't always work so well.
Everyone whinges about Uber undermining the taxi monopoly
... the reality is, Uber is pretty much ignoring laws around proper licensing, insurance, background checks, and anything else.So you really have no idea of what the hell you'll get.

Re:the establishment really does not like competit
Silly hater? Illogical nonsense? Hey asshole -- how about you at least bother to fucking google
Here's a comprehensive list of incidents, and in the US and Europe, not just in India and Pakistan http://www.whosdrivingyou.org/...
Fact is any psycho can become an uber driver and use the service to cruise for victims and that's exactly what has happened and will happen until they start screening and licensing their drivers as per the tai regulations EVERYWHERE mandate.
So fuck you, fuck your "mod point" and fuck your inability to even fucking use a fucking search engine.

Re:Why
Criminal records checks
Corporate liability for misconduct
Vehicle checks and certifications
Availability of vehicles in off hours
Services for the disabled
Rate limits.
Discrimination, passengers can not be discriminated against based on protected aspects such as race, gender, age, etc.
All of the above go into the regulation of taxis in most jurisdictions. In exchange for these regulations the taxi companies are given a limited number of licenses so that the limited revenue potential does not get spread too thin to make a living wage.I used to work for a cab company and they threatened to fine us if we did not put on more handicap accessible vehicles. If Uber takes off the limited amount of revenue will be spread over too many people and full time drivers will find other work. Part time drivers work whenever they want and there is no guarantee there will be divers available to all times.
Uber does not care who drives for them or if they make a living wage. They just want the revenue. There has already been strikes(scroll to the bottom) for higher pay.
